Whittier Tunnel Ride
Whittier Tunnel, Alaska.
This video is about motorcycling through the 2.5 mile long Whittier Tunnel in south-central Alaska. It is a long video (intentionally) because the section where you ride through the tunnel was left unedited. I did this so you could get a real experience on how long you need to keep focused on riding the narrow space between the rails, and understand there is no real space to pull over unless of an extreme emergency.
Whittier is located at 60°46′27″N 148°40′40″W (60.774174, −148.677649). The only land access is through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a mixed-use road and rail tunnel.
Whittier is on the northeast shore of the Kenai Peninsula, at the head of Passage Canal, on the west side of Prince William Sound. Whittier is 75 mi (121 km) southeast of Anchorage.
The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (often referred to simply as the Whittier Tunnel) is a multi-use highway and railroad tunnel that passes under Maynard Mountain. At 13,300 ft (4,100 m), it is the second-longest highway tunnel and longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America. The tunnel provides access to the State of Alaska ferry terminal in Whittier, opening up possibilities to load your motorcycle on several ferry's and travel across Prince William Sound.

A driving tour of Whittier, Alaska + The Tunnel!
This drive begins at Seward Highway, and follows the Portage Glacier Road to, and through, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. On the other side is Whittier -- and I think I drove on every street in town. Please let me know if I missed your favorite!

I made this trip in May/June, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Whittier Tunnel in Alaska
The video I took while driving through the Whittier Tunnel in May 2013.
The privately operated, 2.6-mile, dual mode Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (aka Whittier Tunnel) connects the cities of Porter and Whittier on Prince William Sound, 65 miles southeast of Anchorage, Alaska. Originally constructed as a railroad tunnel in 1943, the tunnel was Whittier's only land link for over 50 years, during which time the city developed as an important intermodal barge-rail freight hub. In response to the growing number of people wanting to travel overland to Whittier, DOT&PF converted the tunnel for use as a one-lane combined highway and rail tunnel that allows cars and trains to take turns traveling through the tunnel.
The Whittier Tunnel conversion involved two innovative P3s. DOT&PF procured the conversion as its first design-build contract, which it awarded to Kiewit Construction Company. Construction began in September 1998 and involved replacing the grave track bed with concrete slab suitable for both rail and rubber tire vehicles. - Excerpted from the DOT's website (
Longest Tunnel in U.S | Whittier, Alaska
Driving through the Whittier Tunnel (Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel) in Alaska. You literally have to drive through a mountain to get into Whittier. The tunnel closes down every day around 11 pm (in the summer months) and reopens in the morning. Following the posted speed limits, we found that it took about 6-10 minutes to drive completely through the tunnel each way (depending on traffic).

Driving the longest highway tunnel in North America: Whittier Tunnel in Alaska!
In this video, I drive the 2.5 mile long Whittier Tunnel in Alaska. This tunnel is the gateway between the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound. Whittier Tunnel is about an hour southeast of Anchorage, Alaska. Just on the Prince William Sound side, is the beautiful Portage Glacier Pass hiking trail.
A drive through Alaska's Whittier Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel
This recording was made on the drive from Anchorage to Whittier, Alaska via the Portage Glacier Highway, through the Whittier Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. At 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) this one lane tunnel is the longest in North America, and the first designed for -40 Fahrenheit temperatures and 150 mph winds. Since it's only one one-lane, the tunnel must be shared by cars and trains traveling in both directions. Using Jet turbine engines, the tunnel is usually aired out in between trips. The tunnel's unique design enables a single lane of traffic to travel directly over the railroad track - thus saving tens of millions of dollars over the cost of constructing a new tunnel.

Alaska 2018 - 31 [Taking an RV through the tunnel to Whittier, Alaska]
Can you believe we took the RV through this 2 1/2 mile one-way tunnel to Whittier, Alaska? It was crazy and looked like we wouldn’t fit as we approached. See more details and still photos in our blog post:
Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel
The tunnel to Whittier is the longest highway tunnel in North America. Built as a rail tunnel, it’s now shared by trains and cars. You drive right on top of the rails! It was $38 to go through in our RV.
City of Whittier Campground
As you come out of the tunnel, there’s a campground on the left right on the water. Pull into your site for beautiful views. It’s $20 a night for dry camping. You pay down the road at the harbormaster or one of the self-pay kiosks.
Around Whittier
There’s not much to Whittier. There are a couple of restaurants and shops. Cruise ships dock here. We drove around, checked out waterfalls, abandoned buildings, and viewed the glacier. The main attraction for us was taking the tunnel.

We’ve finally put up a little shop with VeganRV march! Check out our buttons, magnets, and stickers here:

Jet Ski to Glaciers & Helicopter in Chugach Mountains
Episode 16 takes us to Whittier Alaska where we explore the towns living arrangements in the Begich Towers then go Jet Skiing to Glaciers in Blackstone Bay.
Whittier is only accessible by air, water, or the one way tunnel that shares traffic with a train. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (aka the Whittier Tunnel) is a rough rock tunnel that is the only ground access to the city and until the early 2000's this tunnel was for trains only. Each end of the tunnel has long waiting areas where traffic lines up, and if no trains come street vehicles are allowed through the tunnel each half hour after the tunnel has cleared from opposing traffic.
We then head over to Anchorage first with a stop in Turnagain Arm to watch the Alaska bore tide surfers. In Anchorage a friend took us for a ride in a Robinson R44 helicopter into Alaska's Chugach Mountains all the way up to Lake George. Bob Kaufman spoke with us about life in Alaska before we head further north and get our first, but not last glimpse of the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights in Alaska.
