ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli Peninsula, Çanakkale Province, Turkey, Europe
Anzac Cove is a small cove on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. It became famous as the site of World War I landing of the ANZACs on 25 April 1915. The cove is 600 metres long, bounded by the headlands of Arıburnu to the north and Little Arıburnu, known as Hell Spit, to the south. Following the landing at Anzac Cove, the beach became the main base for the Australian and New Zealand troops for the eight months of the Gallipoli campaign. On Anzac Day in 1985, the name Anzac Cove was officially recognised by the Turkish government. The Anzac Day dawn service was held at Ari Burnu Cemetery within the cove until 1999 when the number of people attending outgrew the site. A purpose built Anzac Commemorative Site was constructed nearby on North Beach in time for the 2000 service. Over the years, Anzac Cove beach has been degraded by erosion, and the construction of the coast road from Kabatepe to Suvla, originally started by Australian engineers just prior to the evacuation of Anzac in December 1915, resulted in the beach being further reduced and bounded by a steep earth embankment. The only way onto the beach was via the CWGC cemeteries at each headland, Arıburnu Cemetery, and Beach Cemetery. In 2003 the Australian government announced that it was negotiating with Turkey to place Anzac Cove on the National Heritage List, which included Australian sites such as the Eureka Stockade gardens. However this request was dismissed by the Turkish government as the Gallipoli peninsula is Turkish territory and already a national park in the Turkish National Park System. In 2004 the Australian Minister for Veteran's Affairs, Danna Vale, made a request to the Turkish authorities that roadworks be carried out in the area. In 2005, the resultant efforts to widen the road to provide a bus parking area for the Commemorative Site covered some of the remaining beach, making it impossible to traverse, and cut into Plugge's Plateau, making the path to the summit and Plugge's Plateau Cemetery impassable. On 18 October 2005 the federal minister for veterans affairs, Danna Vale, called for the battlefield to be recreated in Australia, saying that the physical similarity between the end of the Mornington Peninsula, in Victoria, and Anzac Cove, in Turkey, is uncanny.

In this episode, David takes us around the main sights of Gallipoli, Turkey - a peninsula in the Dardanelles Strait that has long been known for its strategic position on the main route between Europe and Asia. In other words, whoever or whatever wanted to pass through the Marmara Sea into Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) would first have to cross the Dardanelles Strait. Thus, Gallipoli has always been at the center of military action throughout the centuries.
On April 25th, 1915, the British tried to capture Constantinople by launching an attack on Gallipoli. This is known as the Gallipoli Campaign. Today, visiting Gallipoli reveals just how important the peninsula was for Allied forces to possess in WWI. Touring the Gallipoli Peninsula shows just how many casualties there were from around the world.
David starts his tour on the west side of the peninsula, at the 15th century Kilitbahir Castle, to see exactly how the Ottomans defended the Dardanelles Strait. The location of Kilitbahir Castle is a strategic one - it is positioned at the narrowest part of the strait.
Next up, David shows us the impressive Martyr’s Memorial to honor the 250,000+ Ottoman troops that perished in WWI. The memorial features a massive rectangular monument, sculptures and a expansive cemetery of symbolic tombstones for the Ottoman soldiers who died in the war. Each tombstone has the named of 36 soldiers.
Ottoman soldiers are not the only ones who died during the Gallipoli Campaign. David’s guide Emre takes David to see the Hellas Memorial dedicated to the British soldiers. Their names are inscribed on the sides of the monument’s square platform. Emre and David then go to the Anzac Cove Ceremonial Area, a beach where a memorial ceremony is held each year on April 25th to commemorate the Gallipoli Campaign. Anzac Coce was where Australian and New Zealand troops invaded Gallipoli.
Lone Pine Cemetery and Memorial is another war memorial dedicated to the Australian soldiers who died in the Battle of Lone Pine in August 1925.
The last stop on Emre and David’s tour of Gallipoli takes them to Chunuk Bair Memorial dedicated to New Zealand soldiers.

Çanakkale Destani Tanitim Merkezi, is a memorial site set in the heart of the National Park of Gallipoli Peninsula. It took us just over four hours to drive to this place from Istanbul. Its a Historical place where many lives were taken. The museum inside tell you the story that took place outside those walls during the year of 1915.
Where many Anzacs had landed at the Anzac Cove on Sunday, 25 April 1915, also known as the landing at Gaba Tepe, War.
This beautiful museum is a tribute to those soldiers who where killed in action.

Whether you're from New Zealand or Australia, visiting Turkey to sleep in Anzac Cove Gallipoli to wake up on Anzac day for the Dawn Service is something the majority wish they could do. This travel vlog series through Turkey is important for us far beyond just visiting a cool country, we picked this trip with Travel Talk Tours in part because of the history behind our Lest We Forget motto and it's significance for us to be able to visit Gallipoli and attend the Dawn Service.
Our timing wasn't ideal though, with threats of retaliation for a nasty event that happened in New Zealand a few months prior there was genuine safety concerns that had everyone on edge. Not just all of the New Zealand and Australia visitors to Gallipoli attending the Dawn Service either, with the amount of media coverage about Anzac Day back in NZ and Aus it was our families who were seriously concerned and worried as well.
We almost didn't make this video, but decided against letting fear hold us back - it's a genuine experience of an amazing trip to Anzac cove, attending the one true Dawn Service and paying our respect to the spirit of Anzac.
If you're reading this because you're deciding if you should book that ticket to Turkey, make the trek to Gallipoli and visit Anzac cove - DO IT. Fear aside, it was an emotional and incredible experience to be there and understand even deeper what happened to our own.

Anzac Day dawn service from Anzac Cove in Gallipoli | ABC News
Despite a security scare before the service, hundreds gathered in Anzac Cove to mark 104 years since the landing at Gallipoli.
Turkish authorities said they arrested a 26-year-old Syrian man in Tekirdag, a north-western province close to the Gallipoli peninsula, on the morning before the dawn service.

We stayed at ANZAC House in Çanakkale and caught the ferry from Asia to Europe. We did a tour of Gallipoli which included Kabatepe War Museum, Brighton Beach, Anzac Cove, Ari Burn Cemetery, Anzac Commemoration Site, Lone Pine Australian Memorial, Johnston's Jolly, 57th Regiment Turkish Memorial and Chunuk Baird New Zealand Memorial.

The BBC News drone was flown over the Gallipoli peninsula to capture the historic sites where so many died. Friday marks the start of commemorations around the world for those who died in the fight for the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli. The forces of the Ottoman Empire repelled an attack from the British Army, soldiers from Commonwealth countries including Australia, New Zealand, India and Canada, and France.
Between April 1915 and the Allied withdrawal in January 1916, more than 130,000 men were killed on the two sides.

The landing at Anzac Cove on Sunday, 25 April 1915, also known as the landing at Gaba Tepe, and to the Turks as the Arıburnu Battle, was part of the amphibious invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula by the forces of the British Empire, which began the land phase of the Gallipoli Campaign of the First World War.
The assault troops, mostly from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), landed at night on the western (Aegean Sea) side of the peninsula. They were put ashore one mile (1.6 km) north of their intended landing beach. In the darkness, the assault formations became mixed up, but the troops gradually made their way inland, under increasing opposition from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. Not long after coming ashore the ANZAC plans were discarded, and the companies and battalions were thrown into battle piece-meal, and received mixed orders. Some advanced to their designated objectives while others were diverted to other areas, then ordered to dig in along defensive ridge lines.
Although they failed to achieve their objectives, by nightfall the ANZACs had formed a beachhead, albeit much smaller than intended. In places they were clinging onto cliff faces with no organised defence system. Their precarious position convinced both divisional commanders to ask for an evacuation, but after taking advice from the Royal Navy about how practicable that would be, the army commander decided they would stay. The exact number of the day's casualties is not known. The ANZACs had landed two divisions but over two thousand of their men had been killed or wounded, together with at least a similar number of Turkish casualties.
Since 1916 the anniversary of the landings on 25 April has been commemorated as Anzac Day, becoming one of the most important national celebrations in Australia and New Zealand. The anniversary is also commemorated in Turkey and the United Kingdom.

ANZAC Day Gallipoli Dawn Service
The Dawn Service at Anzac Cove marks the place where Australians and New Zealanders initially landed, then fought side by side during 1915. Members of the ADF and New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) mount a combined catafalque party, and conduct the service in tribute to the ANZACs who lost their lives.
