I hope it entertains, educates, and encourages people to hike! Please enjoy, like, sub, share, and spread the word!
Begin excerpt:
It’s a hiker’s instinct to get moving, so it was excruciating waiting for someone to come unlock the tower’s door.
Perkins Tower, a unique structure built of granite stones by the CCC in 1934, is 5 stories high with pairs of perpendicular, rectangular windows on all 4 sides of each floor. This purpose-built observation tower was named after George Walbridge Perkins Sr., founder and first president of Palisades Interstate Park Commission.
B&W images, printed on wall tiles, depicted antique buses, huge steamboats and massive troops of Boy Scouts. The top floor had a commanding view and at 1,305’, on a clear day you can see into 4 states: NY, NJ, PA and CT - or with help of those silver colored, coin-operated machines called “tower viewers.”
FUN FACT: Tower Optical, founded in 1932, only manufactures about 35 tower viewers each year, but thousands more are maintained by the company. Viewers can hold up to $500 in quarters.
I finally resumed heading north, and more snack machines were stationed at Hessian Lake, including a bright yellow, full-size M&M’s dispenser also offering Skittles and the like. Another machine vended 20 different kinds of popsicles. This was my kind of place! Visiting a snack bar, I had been craving a mouthwatering pepper steak sub, but prices were sky high so I only bought a small order of french-fries. Sneaking up in slow-motion, a tame grey squirrel leapt onto the picnic table across from me, laid down like a dog and started eyeballing my fries! Tossing him one, a couple of southbound section hikers and I laughed as he fetched it. College girls from New York, these 2 were looking to meet up with thru-hiker friends in the area. One chick with punk rock hair gave me a green apple. In some primitive countries, that means we’re engaged! Too bad she wasn’t hiking north.
Bear Mountain Carousel had wooden chariots and hand carved critters to ride on, including black bear, deer, fox and so on. Even a skunk. Hares appeared to be hopping and bobcats pouncing. Sadly, no joyful merry-go-round music was playing, because the pavilion is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Fun should never close! End excerpt.

USA Vlog 2- Native American Darts, Tomato Tasting, Steel Stacks, the AT, & the Fair
This is the second Vlog of our trip to the States in the summer of 2016. First stop: The Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown. Before we had a look inside at the Lenope (Delaware Indian) artifacts, the guide had us outside throwing Native American darts. When was the last time you were at a museum that was so hand on?! (This was all because we told the guide that we came directly from an archery class- see Vlog #1).
At 5:08 in the video you can see our visit to the Wildlands Conservancy in Emmaus, PA where we attended a Penn State Extension program workshop given by certified Master Gardeners on the topics of Pollinators (such as bees) and Tomatoes concluding with a tasting! We met a very interesting man calling himself Tomato Joe. His hobby is growing as many different varieties of tomatoes as possible. I had no idea there were so many tomatoes with different sizes, shapes, color, and texture. I was able to get some free seeds too!
At 6:31 there is a short clip of the Emmaus Run Inn. I am happy that there are so many running specialty stores in the Lehigh Valley! These stores also organize weekly runs. BTW: Emmaus is the home of Rodale Press which puts out Runner's World Magazine. Here I stocked up on Gu and other gels to run the Lehigh Valley VIA Marathon.
At 6:37 you can see the Levitt Pavilion at the Steel Stacks in Bethlehem, PA. They offer fifty free concerts a year! This one is Rafiya! We loved the singing, dancing, and percussion of this African Congo-influence band (with a hip Japanese Bassist). The songs were in French and English. I couldn't stop grooving and tapping my foot in my camping chair. A lot of people were up dancing! We had perfect weather and not a bug in sight!
Coincidentally, the Steel Stacks was where the Race Expo was held for the Lehigh Valley VIA Marathon. That was where I picked up my race bib and swag bag a week later! It is near the Sands Casino. The Steel Stacks show the former glory of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation which had a 99-year history and was instrumental in winning WWII. My parents and two grandfathers worked for Bethlehem Steel until their retirement, so it is a special place for me.
At 7:31- In all my years in the Lehigh Valley PA, I had never stepped foot on the famous Appalachian Trail which stretches from Maine to Georgia. Therefore, I drove niece and nephew to the little parking lot marking the trail in Windgap, PA. My niece stayed with the truck and Lawrence and I climbed up to the rocky trailhead to snap a few pictures. We also saw a few through-hikers in town, no doubt restocking on supplies.
At 7:56 we are at the Great Allentown Fair. It is full of vendors, rides, petting zoo animals, and games of chance. We also toured some RVs that were on site (hint to my wife!).
Stay tuned for USA 2016 Vlog #3 for more fun! Please like and subscribe to Runnersgarden see more videos about running, recovery, nutrition, gear reviews, gardening, and adventures in the USA and Asia! Thanks for watching!

SUMMARY
=======
New Jersey is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the Northeastern United States. It is a peninsula, bordered on the north and east by the state of New York; on the east, southeast, and south by the Atlantic Ocean; on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; and on the southwest by the Delaware Bay and Delaware. New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state by area but the 11th-most populous, with 9 million residents as of 2017, and the most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. New Jersey lies completely within the combined statistical areas of New York City and Philadelphia and is the third-wealthiest state by median household income as of 2016.New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements in the state. The English later seized control of the region, naming it the Province of New Jersey after the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey, and granting it as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. New Jersey was the site of several decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century.
In the 19th century, factories in cities (known as the Big Six), Camden, Paterson, Newark, Trenton, Jersey City, and Elizabeth helped to drive the Industrial Revolution. New Jersey's geographic location at the center of the Northeast megalopolis, between Boston and New York City to the northeast, and Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., to the southwest, fueled its rapid growth through the process of suburbanization in the second half of the 20th century. In the first decades of the 21st century, this suburbanization began reverting with the consolidation of New Jersey's culturally diverse populace toward more urban settings within the state, with towns home to commuter rail stations outpacing the population growth of more automobile-oriented suburbs since 2008.
