USA : NEW YORK: POPE VISITS AQUEDUCT HORSE RACING STADIUM
English/Nat
Pope John Paul the Second is continuing to express concern over the state of Catholicism in the U-S.
His latest mass at New York's Aqueduct Raceway stressed the importance of family values.
While some American Catholics see John Paul the Second's message as too conservative, this crowd of over 75-thousand had nothing but good feelings about the Pontiff. Continuing what he calls a tour of goodwill, Pope John Paul the Second was welcomed at New York's Aqueduct Raceway for the second open-air mass in the U-S.
SOT: GREETING
A crowd of over 75-thousand crammed the venue, which usually serves as a horse racing track.
For these people, the chance to glimpse the Pontiff is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
SOUNDBITE:
It's just an affirmation of my faith and I know that he symbolizes peace for all of us in the world and he's here on a mission of peace.
SUPER CAPTION: Genoveve Millen, Worshipper
SOUNDBITE:
He went to the Meadowlands last night and I watched it on TV. Now I'm here and it's like the best thing in my life.
SUPER CAPTION: John Paul Bruno, Worshipper
The Pope's official speeches have for the most part avoided politics and stressed a message of peace.
But the Pope has stressed his conservative and to some American Catholics controversial views on the state of the church in the U-S.
The Pope has expressed concern that America's losing its moral direction a direction he says must include strong, traditional, two-parent families.
SOUNDBITE:
Society must strongly reaffirm the right of the child to grow up in a family which, as far as possible, both parents are present. Fathers of families must accept their full share of responsibility for the lives and upbringing of their children.
SUPER CAPTION: Pope John Paul II
For the faithful gathered here the message seemed critical at times.
But the Pope's words also left many with hope for the future of the Church throughout North America.
SOUNDBITE:
I'm going back to Quebec where we have a severely broken church, to go back feeling refreshed and to share that with my congregation. To let them know that the Catholic Church is alive and well.
SUPER CAPTION:Father Brad
And the Pope delighted Americans with a patriotic blessing
SOUNDBITE:
To all you I say, God bless you all. God bless America.
SUPER CAPTION: Pope John Paul II
Despite the Pope's criticisms, his trip here has been met with an outpouring of affection from the faithful.

New York City 4K - Morning Drive - Queens - Driving Downtown
Friday morning drive in the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world. Video focuses on the Astoria and Ditmars Steinway neighborhoods in Queens New York City.
Queens is the easternmost of the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest borough geographically and is adjacent to the borough of Brooklyn at the southwestern end of Long Island. To its east is Nassau County. Queens also shares water borders with the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. Coterminous with Queens County since 1899, the borough of Queens is the second largest in population (after Brooklyn), with an estimated 2,358,582 residents in 2017, approximately 48% of them foreign-born. Queens County also is the second most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, behind Brooklyn, which is coterminous with Kings County. Queens is the fourth most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States. If each of New York City's boroughs were an independent city, Queens would be the nation's fourth most populous, after Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.
Queens has the most diversified economy of the five boroughs of New York City. It is home to John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, both among the world's busiest, which in turn makes the airspace above Queens among the busiest in the United States. Landmarks in Queens include Flushing Meadows–Corona Park; Citi Field, home to the New York Mets baseball team; the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the US Open tennis tournament; Kaufman Astoria Studios; Silvercup Studios; and Aqueduct Racetrack. The borough has diverse housing, ranging from high-rise apartment buildings in the urban areas of western and central Queens, such as Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City, to somewhat more suburban neighborhoods in the eastern part of the borough, including Douglaston–Little Neck and Bayside.

Queens Boulevard is a major thoroughfare in the New York City borough of Queens connecting Midtown Manhattan, via the Queensboro Bridge, to Jamaica. The combination of Queens Boulevard's immense width, heavy automobile traffic, and thriving commercial scene made it the most dangerous thoroughfare in New York City by the 1990s.

Here's where New York City's sewage really goes
New York City is home to 8.4 million waste-producing people; that's a lot of toilets, drains, and sewers. It takes 14 wastewater treatment facilities scattered throughout the five boroughs to clean up all of our dirty water.
We visited the largest facility, the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to see how the water is treated. It's a dirty job that surprisingly smells great.

The Dam at Croton Gorge Park
Croton Gorge Park. A park I've visited a few times. The last time I was there the water was calm. This time as I was driving into the park, I was getting hit with the mist from the waterfall. In my last video from the park. I flew through the fall. This time was the day after major thunderstorms. And the water was rough in the fall. A heavy mist was kicking up from the fall. The sun and the clouds were playing hide and seek. It was also a chilly day. And I had to get a look at the dam. I use to visit this area with my family when I was younger. Almost every summer. My Father used to love these trips. So I had to put the bird up and get some shots of the fall colors. Happy 84th. Birthday Dad.
Croton Gorge Park is a 97-acre property at the base of the Croton Dam and affords impressive views of the dam and spillway. The park is a popular spot for fishing, picnicking and hiking, with direct trail access to New York State’s Old Croton Aqueduct, which begins here. In winter, the park is a favorite spot for cross-country skiing and sledding.
The Croton River also begins here. The bridge that spans the Croton River and affords the best view of the spectacular spillway is once again open to the public after a repair project.
The Old Croton Dam, built to supply New York City with water, was the first large masonry dam in the United States. Completed in 1842, it was the prototype for many municipal water supply dams in the east during the mid-nineteenth century. The city’s needs, however, soon outgrew the Croton Dam water supply. Consequently, work began on the New Croton Dam, also called the Cornell Dam because of its location on land purchased from A.B. Cornell, in 1893. Completed in 1907, the Cornell Dam stands over 200 feet high. The Croton Reservoir has a capacity of about 34 billion gallons of water with a watershed covering 177 square miles.

Turkey Hill - Mt Kisco, NY - 1 hour hike
30 Minutes North of New York City, lies the quick but enjoyable hiking loop known as Turkey Hill near Yorktown, NY in Westchester county. While it does not have the dramatic views that Breakneck Ridge offers, it is also a much less challenging hike which makes it ideal for beginners, young children and those looking seeking a less intense physical experience while still enjoying the beauty of the nature and a moderate uphill climb.
Patrick Battuello - President of HorseRacingWrongs.com
Patrick Battuello testified at the Public Hearing on the Welfare of Racehorses in New York State before the Senate Standing Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering and the Senate Standing Committee on Domestic Animal Welfare on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
Mr. Battuello is the Founder and President of the non-profit organization, Horseracing Wrongs, and asserts that horse racing is immoral and must end. He stated that horse racing is an archaic non-viable gambling industry that exploits, abuses, and kills horses.
An average of 137 horses die every year on NYS racetracks; 2000 horses, nationally. This does not include racehorses that die away from the racetracks and the estimated 15,000 to 20,000 shipped to slaughter in Mexico and Canada each year when no longer making money or wanted by their owners.
The fact is, he testified, that horse racing is in decline, and since 2000, 34 tracks have closed in the US. More tracks would close if not heavily subsidized by government. Also sensibilities toward animal exploitation, especially regarding entertainment, are rapidly evolving. Ringling Brothers has closed, ending 146 years of animal abuse. This past November, Florida voted to outlaw greyhound racing in that state which will close 11 of the nation’s 17 tracks, leaving dog racing in America all but dead.

Worst Horse Racing Accident I've ever seen
On February 29th, 2012, in the 8th race at Charlestown Racetrack. A filly named Sharp Beauty brokedown causing a severe chain reaction that results in every horse losing its rider except #3 Miss Fifty, skillfully ridden by veteran jockey Oswald Pereira. Except for the horse that brokedown, all horses seem to have come out with minor injuries.
