Arabia Mountain is the northern of two peaks in the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. A low saddle separates it from Bradley Mountain, several hundred feet to its south. The two form a monadnock. The peak is 955 feet (290m) above sea level, rising 172 feet (52m) above Arabia Lake reservoir. Bradley Mountain is closer to the visitor trails than Arabia Mountain and is often mis-identified by visitors as Arabia Mountain.
Arabia Mountain is one of Metro Atlanta's three monadnocks, which also include Stone Mountain and Panola Mountain. The unique topography and geology of this monadnock allows for unusual plant and animal species to thrive. Arabia Mountain has five species that are listed as both state and federally endangered, including the bright-red diamorpha plant that lives in small pools of water (known as vernal pools or solution pits) that form on the monadnock.[1]
Panola Mountain is 3.63 miles (5.84 km) to the southwest. While designated as one peak on USGS maps, most users familiar with the area consider the rock formation to be two peaks: Arabia Mountain to the northeast, and Bradley Mountain to the southeast, connected by a low saddle.
Arabia Mountain appears to be composed of granite, like other nearby peaks such as Stone Mountain and Panola Mountain. Although made of metamorphic rock, the mountain is actually composed of migmatite, metamorphosed at higher temperatures than gneiss but not sufficiently melted to become granite. The resulting swirl pattern made the rock a popular building stone and many buildings in the region were constructed with stone quarried from the Lithonia district quarries.[2]
Like Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain was quarried for decades before the property was turned over to the DeKalb park system. Structures and excavations from the quarry operations can be seen throughout the park. The stone quarried from Arabia Mountain, officially called Tidal Grey, was prized for its high structural density and compressive strength as well as its swirl pattern. Tidal Grey Arabia Mountain can be seen in the construction of buildings for the U.S. Naval Academy, the Brooklyn Bridge, and street curbing in Atlanta as well as many other Georgia cities.[3]
Prior to 1880, the stone was hand quarried but starting in 1879, workers used drills, dynamite and air compressors to “raise a ledge” or sever a large block of stone from the mass. That allowed more control over the size of the stone and large stones could be used for dimensional or building construction.The proximity to the rail road meant that the Tidal Grey could be easily transported across the country.
Another advancement to the quarrying industry at Arabia Mountain was the discovery that adding granite grit to chicken feed helped with the birds’ digestion. The Davidson family, which owned several quarries in the area, became the largest supplier of poultry grit in the world. They claimed that the sparkling particles of mica in the Stonemo grit attracted the eye and helped the chicken's gizzard break down food. The company was so successful in distributing their feed additive, a TIME Magazine article from 1941 reported the U.S. government allowed them to continue to operate during WWII in the name of national defense.In 1949, the Lithonia district produced nearly 1.5 million tons of granite valued at the time at $3 million.

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is the top destination in Rockdale County. The natural beauty of this 2,000+ acre preserve and the artistry of its historic buildings set the stage for a place that speaks to the soul.
The Monastery has always been open to the public, but in 2011, the monks incorporated a historic barn into a Monastic Heritage Center. The center includes an exhibit center, the largest bookstore of its kind in the Southeast and a renowned bonsai greenhouse.
At the visitor center, guests can view a film about the history of the area, follow the history of monasticim through the ages and discover how a group of monks chose Georgia as their home in 1944. One of their most remarkable achievements is the construction of the Cloister and Abbey Church. Built by the monks themselves from poured concrete, the building is an engineering and architectural marvel. It has been called “Georgia’s Most Remarkable Concrete Building.” For more images, visit our slideshow here.

A vibrant history, breathtaking beauty and intriguing cultural changes in a compact area form the basis for the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. From early settlers to immigrant rock cutters, freed slaves and Trappist monks many of those stories are still waiting to be told. This is a brief overview of the Area. Click through the menu to the left for more details on our history.
There is little written evidence of the area’s early history. By the time of Anglo settlement in the early 1800’s, the area was sparsely inhabited by Creek and Cherokee tribes. It’s believed that the area served as a buffer between the two nations as well as a transportation and trading area.[1] The land was ceded by the Creeks to the State of Georgia in 1821 and land lots were distributed by lottery to American settlers, many of whom were Revolutionary War veterans.
Historic Downtown Lithonia
The area remained sparsely populated well into the 20th century. A 1935 School District map of DeKalb County shows that many roads remained unpaved.[2] The landscape was dotted with stone quarries and rural farms. Most of the earliest settlements formed around the South River, which bisects the Heritage Area, or along crossroads such as the National Register Historic District of Klondike. As the railroad was established between Augusta and Atlanta, settlements moved from the river to take advantage of new transportation and commerce in the city of Lithonia, which was formed in 1856.
Today, the AMNHA’s proximity to Atlanta and its large parcels of undisturbed land make it attractive to suburban development. The broader Atlanta region was the second fastest growing metropolitan area in the country in the 2000s.[3] However, the area has been noted for its distinctive ability to retain “open and small scale character in contrast to the character of the fast growing metropolitan area.”[4] The topography and geology are “defined by rolling hills and ridges cut by numerous streams… most of the landforms in the region relate to underlying bedrock of granite and metamorphic rocks.”[5] Two exposed granite monadnocks that formed hundreds of millions of years ago are the primary features of the area.

Arabia Mountain and Panola Mountain, now a county and state park respectively, bear evidence of 19th century human settlement and 20th century quarrying activities. Smaller granite outcroppings are scattered throughout the area and active quarries are found within the northern boundary. This “Lithonia Granite” has been used in buildings throughout the heritage area, the region and the country. The close proximity of the railroad allowed granite to be transported all over the United States for use in street curbing, municipal buildings and significant structures at the West Point and Annapolis military academies.

Lithonia is a city in eastern DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The city's population was 1,924 at the 2010 census.[4] Lithonia is in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Lithonia means city/town of stone. Lithonia is in the heart of the Georgian granite-quarrying and viewing region, hence the name of the town, from the Greek λίθος lithos, for stone. The huge nearby granite dome, Stone Mountain, is composed largely of a rock called Lithonia gneiss, a form of granite. The area has a history of rock quarries. The mines were served by the Georgia Railroad and Atlanta, Stone Mountain & Lithonia Railway. Some of the rock quarries have been converted to parkland and the railines to rail-trail.
Lithonia is one of the gateways to the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.[5]
he Lithonia Historic District consists of a commercial core surrounded by residential areas, with a period of significance spanning from 1845 to 1964. Stylistic influences in the district include Second Empire, Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, Neoclassical Revival, English Vernacular Revival, Craftsman, and Colonial Revival. The district is bisected by the Georgia/CSX Railroad, which runs perpendicular to the historic commercial core's primary thoroughfare, Main Street. The commercial area extends south from the intersection of Main Street and the railroad, covering a two block area. The commercial buildings are primarily brick and local granite masonry, with little decorative detailing. Commercial styles include single retail, multiple retail, and retail and office types. Within the historic district, there is some non-historic infill construction such as the 1968 Lithonia Plaza shopping center.
The residential areas consist architecture typical of late 19th to mid 20th century types and styles. Residential neighborhoods also feature locally quarried granite and gneiss. House types and styles include the central hall Georgian cottage, gabled-wing cottage, Queen Anne cottage, New South cottage, pyramid cottage, bungalow, Ranch house, I-House and Queen Anne house.
Landmark properties include the Masonic Lodge (1916), The Lithonia Women's Club (1928), the Lithonia First United Methodist Church (1910), Antioch Baptist Church (1911), Lithonia Presbyterian Church, The Union Missionary Church (1911), the Bruce Street equalization school (c.1953), and “The Seminary” (1895). Contributing sites in the district include two cemeteries, two parks, the former Georgia Railroad Quarry, and the ruins of the Bruce Street School for African-Americans (1938).[7]
The district is significant under National Register criterion A (association with historic events) and C (architecture), with areas of significance in Architecture, Black and European Ethnic Heritage, Community Planning and Development, Industry, and Transportation.

More than 1,500 NAACP delegates and supporters are expected to descend on the Stonecrest area in October for the 68th annual State Convention and Civil Rights Conference.
The DeKalb NAACP is hosting the Oct. 6-10 convention, which will be held at the four Stonecrest hotels -- Hyatt Place, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Comfort Suites, and the Hilton Garden Inn -- in Lithonia.
The hotels are located next to the 1.3 million square foot Mall at Stonecrest, which has shopping, dining and an AMC cinema. They also offer easy access to the Arabia Mountain trails.
Organizers say the convention will be Stonecrest's first major convention.
Yvonne Hawks, president of the DeKalb NAACP, said the convention will be a major economic boost.
We're hoping this convention will be the kickoff for future conventions in the mall area, she said at a May 20 press
conference announcing the chapter's selection as host.
Edward O. DuBose, president of the Georgia Conference of the NAACP, said they are expecting more than 500 delegates from across Georgia and more than 1,000 visitors to attend the convention.
Bettye Davis, executive director of One DeKalb, who represented DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis at the press conference, said Ellis is excited about the convention which will bring additional revenue to the county.
This is our stimulus package, she said. Bringing this statewide convention to DeKalb County and to this area is our stimulus package and we appreciate it.
During the fall convention, delegates will evaluate health, education, criminal justice, and veterans issues. Dubose said there are more than 700,000 veterans in Georgia.
We want to make veterans the centerpiece of this civil rights issue, he said.
With the this being an election year, the NAACP will host forums to discuss the political empower movement.
We are more prepared than ever to help in the outcome of the election, Dubose said.
The convention will include a morning run/walk that will focus on health, and a golf tournament. It is open to the public.
