Aegina – So close to Athens, so beautiful, so historic!
Aegina (also Aigina, Egina or even Egine) is located 26 km (16 nautical miles) South of Athens. It is the closest to Athens Saronic island, and can easily be reached from Piraeus for a one-day adventure.
All ferries or Hydrofoils are leaving from the port of Piraeus, Gate E8 almost every 45 minutes depending on the season. One way ticket price varies from € 8,50 to € 9,50 for the boats, or € 13 - € 13,50 for the Hydrofoils. The trip takes between 40 - 90 minutes depending on the boat type. Aegina can be combined with a short visit to the close island of Agistri, a lovely little place with crystal turquoise shallow waters, perfect for relaxation.
Aegina is a lovely, picturesque and beautiful island. This is why it gets very popular as a weekend destination for the Athenians. However, as it has been the capital of Greece for a short time back in 1828, so you will be surprised to find elegant Neoclassical buildings, big impressive churches and a really large live and colorful port. At the same time, small fishing villages, beautiful beaches for all tastes, great seafood tavernas, cafes, and nightlife make Aegina even more attractive. If you are asking for Archaeological sites or museums Aegina is offering that too. The well-preserved ancient temple οf “Aphaia” is a fantastic, serene place with an amazing view, easily reached by local bus. As for the museums, you can find quite a lot for such a small place. The Archaeological Museum, the folk museum, the “Kapralos” museum -workplace of the modern Greek sculptor and painter Kapralos and of course the “Aphaia” museum.
Nevertheless, everything you would expect to find on a Greek island it is there waiting to be explored by you in Aegina. If you plan to stay at your Athensflat vacation rental more than one day and at the same time your plans aren't including any of the Aegean islands, Don’t miss it. Aegina is just 1 hour away from Athens center!

Aegina is a popular weekend destination for Athenians through out the year (yes, even off season). Easy to be reached from Piraeus (only 40’ away with a flying dolphin) it is a great place offering relaxing beaches (Marathon, Agia Marina, Souvala etc), some great fish taverns (especially in Perdika village) and of course its main town, Aegina, a nice town to stroll around its promenade and the back alleys. Don’t miss the archealogical sites of the island (Kolona, archaeological museum, Aphaea temple) and some important monasteries (Agios Nektarios and Panagia Crysoleontisa). On your way back don’t forget to but a big bag of pistachios (most probably you will eat most of them before you reach Piraeus so take more than one…)
Delos Island, Greece
The island of Delos , near Mykonos, near the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean; ongoing work takes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. From its Sacred Harbour, the horizon shows the two conical mounds that have identified landscapes sacred to a goddess in other sites: one, retaining its Pre-Greek name Mount Kynthos, is crowned with a sanctuary of Zeus.
Established as a culture center, Delos had an importance that its natural resources could never have offered. In this vein Leto, searching for a birthing-place for Artemis and Apollo, addressed the island:Delos, if you would be willing to be the abode of my son Phoebus Apollo and make him a rich temple –; for no other will touch you, as you will find: and I think you will never be rich in oxen and sheep, nor bear vintage nor yet produce plants abundantly. But if you have the temple of far-shooting Apollo, all men will bring you hecatombs and gather here, and incessant savour of rich sacrifice will always arise, and you will feed those who dwell in you from the hand of strangers; for truly your own soil is not rich.

The rapture of the sculptures of Aphaia's Temple
The Aphaia Temple of Aegina was built about the 500 BCE,
is Doric peripteral and was famous for the pediment sculptures.
The complex of sculptures of Parian marble depict scenes from the Trojan war and were put in place when the temple was completed around 490 BCE.

The sculptures of the pediments were stolen in 1811 by the English Cockerell and Foster the German von Hallerstein and the painter Link
, while Greece was still under Turkish occupation. In 1814, Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria purchased the sculptures, and exhibited them in the Glyptothek Museum in Munich, Germany.
We hope that these sculptures will someday return to their motherland.

Archaeological Museum of Drama
The Archaeological Museum of Drama covers chronologically the human presence in the prefecture of Drama from the Middle Paleolithic Age (50,000 years from now), with traces of Palaeolithic hunters living in the cave Sources of Aggitis until modern times (1913).
The exhibition consists of three main halls.
The first archaeological findings indicate the presence of nomadic hunters of the Middle Paleolithic Age in the cave Sources of Aggitis, life to permanent farming Neolithic settlements and the passage in Bronze Age in the city of Drama and position Sitagri. In the same room there are findings from the Iron Age and from the later times, which is dominated by the cult of God Dionysus.
In the second room architectural sculptures, pottery and coins attest the continuity of life in Drama and in the entire area during the Early Christian, Byzantine and after Byzantine times.
In the third room of the exhibition, which is roofed atrium, the visitor can admire sculptures organized into three sections. The first includes architectural sculptures from ancient times to the Ottoman Empire. The second contains votive monuments associated with the cult of various gods of Greco-Roman pantheon and local deities, with particular reference to Dionysus. In the third section there are funerary monuments of Hellenistic and Roman times.

The Eleusinian Mysteries were initiation ceremonies held every year for the cult of Demetra and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece. Of all the mysteries celebrated in ancient times, these were held to be the ones of greatest importance. The mysteries represented the myth of the abduction of Persephone from her mother Demeter by the king of the underworld Hades, in a cycle with three phases, the descent (loss), the search and the ascent, with the main theme the ascent of Persephone and the reunion with her mother. It was a major festival during the Hellenic era, and later spread to Rome. The name of the town, Eleusís seems to be Pre-Greek and it is probably a counterpart with Elysium and the goddess Eileithyia.
A precious discovery in Greece: An ancient synagogue
On the Greek island of Aegina, an ancient synagogue of Romaniote Jews was discovered, including it's elaborate mosaic floor. Now time is running out, as efforts are underway to preserve this priceless piece of Jewish heritage.
