Archaeological Museum of Olympia - Greece HD Travel Channel
After visiting the ancient site, we make a tour of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Already build in 1882 to exhibit finds from the surrounding archaeological sites, it was the first museum outside Athens. In 1975 one set up a new building, renovated in 2003 with high-quality materials. It is one of the most important museums in Greece. The exhibition halls are arranged chronologically in a clockwise direction.
We start our tour with the models of the Pelopion, the first sanctuary. Followed up to 4000 years old figures and weapons, usually made of bronze.
Architectural relics, like the pediment of the Treasure House of Megara, or the east and west pediment of the Temple of Zeus, witness the earlier artful design of the buildings.
We see models and an illustration of a reconstruction of the Statue of Zeus that brings the past back to life. Once the statue had hair and robes covered with gold and a skin made of ivory.
The statues of Nike of Paionios and Hermes of Praxiteles witness the perfection of Greek sculpture.
A highlight in the Roman hall is the bull from the Nymphaeum of Herodes Atticus, a consul, and patron of the arts.

Corfu, Greek Island (Moments of Joy)
Corfu, Greek Island (Moments of Joy)
Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The island is bound with the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology.
The island's history is laden with battles and conquests. The legacy of these struggles is visible in the form of castles punctuating strategic locations across the island. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way. Corfu was long controlled by Venice, which repulsed several Turkish sieges, before falling under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars. Corfu was eventually ceded by the British Empire along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands, and unification with modern Greece was concluded in 1864 under the Treaty of London
The Kanoni peninsula is only 8 km away from Corfu town or a 30-minute walk along the coastline to the south. It is here you will experience amazing views over the green landscape, the azure blue waters of the sea and the two famous islets complementing that world-wide famous scenery. Here you will find those two tiny islands you often see on pictures: one is the islet of Vlaherna and the other one is Pontikonisi or Mouse Island. The view from Kanoni over these two islands with Corfu in the background is so beautiful.
Surrounded by ancient walls, the ruins of ancient Corcyra (Kerkyra, or Corfu) lie just four kilometers south of Corfu town and the site is open to visitors free of charge year-round. A walk around the grounds reveals a number of sites for visitors, including an old open-air theater still used today, and the famed Mon Repos villa - the summer retreat of Greece's former royal family that today hosts the Paleopolis Archaeological Museum - as well as the ruins of a temple dedicated to Hera, a Venetian fountain and what remains of the 5th century BC Doric temple built in honour of Apollo.
Empress of Austria Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sissi in 1890, built a summer palace in the region of Gastouri to the south of the city, with the powerful mythical hero Achilles as its central theme. The palace, with the neoclassical Greek statues that surround it, is a monument to platonic romanticism. It was named Achílleion after the Homeric hero Achilles. The structure is filled with paintings and statues of Achilles, both in the main hall and in the gardens, depicting the scenes of the Trojan War. The Imperial gardens on the hill look over the surrounding green hill crests and valleys and the Ionian sea. The centrepiece of the gardens is a marble statue on a high pedestal, of the mortally wounded Achilles.

Tour of the uninhabited island of Delos, Greece. Delos is one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece.

Delos Island, Greece
The island of Delos , near Mykonos, near the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean; ongoing work takes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. From its Sacred Harbour, the horizon shows the two conical mounds that have identified landscapes sacred to a goddess in other sites: one, retaining its Pre-Greek name Mount Kynthos, is crowned with a sanctuary of Zeus.
Established as a culture center, Delos had an importance that its natural resources could never have offered. In this vein Leto, searching for a birthing-place for Artemis and Apollo, addressed the island:Delos, if you would be willing to be the abode of my son Phoebus Apollo and make him a rich temple –; for no other will touch you, as you will find: and I think you will never be rich in oxen and sheep, nor bear vintage nor yet produce plants abundantly. But if you have the temple of far-shooting Apollo, all men will bring you hecatombs and gather here, and incessant savour of rich sacrifice will always arise, and you will feed those who dwell in you from the hand of strangers; for truly your own soil is not rich.
— Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo 51–60
