Wyspa Delos była zamieszkana od III tysiąclecia p.n.e. Wspaniały ośrodek religijny i polityczny stworzyli tu Jonowie w VII w. p.n.e. Obecnie na wyspie Delos nikt nie mieszka, choć w ciągu dnia odwiedzają ją setki turystów z całego świata. Jak wspomniałem w poprzedniej części filmu z Delos, wielkość stanowisk archeologicznych oraz ilość i rodzaj odkopanych tu obiektów zdumiewa, ale to zdumienie jeszcze bardziej się powiększa przy zwiedzaniu Muzeum Archeologicznego. Nie spodziewaliśmy się tak bogatych i różnorodnych zbiorów sztuki antycznej, które się tu znajdują. Trzeba mieć przecież na uwadze, że również w Atenach jest wiele eksponatów, które pochodzą z Delos. To niewiarygodne, że do współczesnych czasów tyle dzieł sztuki się zachowało, mimo grabieży trwającej na tym terenie przez wiele wieków, od czasu zniszczenia tego wspaniałego antycznego ośrodka religijnego w 88 r. p.n.e. przez wojska Mitrydatesa. Na całym filmowaniu ciąży niestety ciągły pośpiech, aby zdążyć przed odpłynięciem statku. Gdy już odpływamy z wyspy Delos, żegna nas z brzegu ostatnie dzieło Gormleja, podobne do tego, które nas powitało. Gdy z wyspy odpłynie ostatnia łódź, na noc na wyspie zostaną tylko koty. W latach świetności na tej maleńkiej wyspie mieszkało ok. 30 tys. ludzi. Ostatnie ujęcia tej części filmu pokazują już wyspę Mykonos.

The film DELOS 2015, aims at projecting Delos, the largest and richest archaeological site of Greece, worldwide. DELOS 2015 is not an archaeological documentary in its traditional form; it is rather a film that aspires to speak about the diachronic meaning of Delos. It examines why Delos was a ‘sacred place’ for so many centuries; to show its cosmopolitan atmosphere, its social tolerance, its religious tolerance, its acceptance of ‘others’, its liberalism and the harmonious co-existence of civilizations. Delos aspires to be the home-country of ‘Man’ and to be used as a springboard for the utopia of deification and his immortalization.
Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis; remains show that it was inhabited in the 3rd millennium BC. At its height it was second only in importance to the ancient Greeks as Delphi, covered by a variety of temples and sanctuaries. Located just two kilometers from Mykonos, it sits in the center of the islands surrounded by the Cyclades islands, forming a literal circular border. Those involved in the DELOS 2015 initiative are not immersed in wild flowers that grow over the carved marble, but the road to hope and a dream of a modern humanity, anxious in the unending struggle with death and decay.

Excavations on Delos started in 1873 by the French School of Archaeology at Athens and by 1914 the most significant sections of the ancient site had been uncovered.

During ancient times the Cyclades island of Delos was the flourishing centre of Greek culture. Greece's most extensive archaeological site covers the entire island and since 1872 has been frequented by countless archaeologists. Greek legend has it that this now-deserted island was the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis.Offering wonderful ocean views, the amphitheatre dates back to the third century B.C. and accommodated around 5500 spectators. Not all of the island's temples were dedicated to Greek gods and a particularly well-preserved sanctuary of the so-called 'foreign gods' formed part of a beautiful temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, Isis.The lower plateaus on the western side of Kithos Hill contain numerous important cult sites. One of these sanctuaries was the centre of the Hera Cult, the Archaic Heraion, that established itself in 500 B.C. Beautifully restored mosaics with the Phoenician symbol of the goddess Tanith decorate one of the most impressively furnished houses on the island, the House Of Dolphins. The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.
