OMAN - PART 1: AL-AYN - Sunset at an Ancient Necropolis
The soundtrack contains fragments of the album ONE TRUTH by Omar Faruk Tekbilek (World Class Records).
Al-Ayn, a small village in between the huge Hajar Mountains, bears a historical and archaeological treasure. Probably world's oldest beehive tombs are situated on a hill of the Jebel Misht mountain range near the edge of this village. The Al-Ayn Necropolis contains about 18 nearly intact tombs in the shape of a beehive and several already collapsed tombs from which only heaps of stones remained. The Necropolis is about 5.000 years old and is supposed to belong to the Umm-al-Nar culture which is dated back to the third Millennium BC. The tombs are built of flat rough worked stones occurring in the geological formations of this area. The stones are stacked in several walls which enclose the grave chamber in onion like layers. Each tomb has a small open entrance.
There is nearly no confirmed scientific information to find about this and other ancient important archaeological sites of Oman because those sites were recently discovered and are not completely explored yet.
Nevertheless it is worth to visit the Al-Ayn Necropolis. The best time to visit this place is the late afternoon when the Hajar-Mountains and specially the Jebel-Misht mountain range show their whole palette of colours and give the Al-Ayn Necropolis the appropriate background.
