The Areopagus is a prominent rock outcropping located northwest of the Acropolis.
Its Greek name Areios Pagos is translated the (god) Ares Rock.
According to Greek mythology god Ares have been tried here by the gods, for the murder of Poseidon's son Halirrhothius.
In classical times, it functioned as the court for trying deliberate homicide.

Areopagus Hill is a prominent rock outcropping located northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. In classical times, it functioned as the court for trying deliberate homicide. Ares was supposed to have been tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon's son Alirrothios. In Ancient Greek, pagos means big piece of rock. Areios could have come from Ares or from the Erinyes,as on its foot was erected a temple dedicated to the Erinyes where murderers used to find shelter so as not to face the consequences of their actions. Later, the Romans referred to the rocky hill as Mars Hill, after Mars, the Roman God of War. Near the Areopagus was also constructed the basilica of Dionysius Areopagites.

Areopagus is “the Latin form of the Greek word rendered Mars' hill. But it denotes also the council or court of justice which met in the open air on the hill. It was a rocky height to the west of the Acropolis at Athens, on the south-east summit of which the council was held which was constituted by Solon, and consisted of nine archons or chief magistrates who were then in office, and the ex-archons of blameless life.
On this hill of Mars (Gr. Ares) Paul delivered his memorable address to the men of Athens.” ( Book of Acts, Chapter 17, verses 22-31 )

Ο Άρειος Πάγος είναι βραχώδης λόφος βορειοδυτικά της Ακρόπολης, ύψους περίπου 115 μέτρων, που προβάλει μεταξύ της Ακρόπολης και των λόφων Πνύκας και Αγοραίου Κολωνού. Το όνομά του προέρχεται είτε από το θεό Άρη (που κατά την ελληνική μυθολογία δικάστηκε εκεί από τους Θεούς του Ολύμπου για το φόνο του γιου του Ποσειδώνα Αλιρρόθιου), είτε από τις «Αρές Ερινύες» τις λεγόμενες και «Σεμνές» που ήταν χθόνιες θεότητες της τιμωρίας και της εκδίκησης. Στην αρχαιότητα ο βράχος αυτός ήταν αφενός, τόπος λειτουργίας δικαστικού σώματος και συγκεκριμένα της Βουλής του Αρείου Πάγου οι αρμοδιότητες του οποίου μετά το 462 π.Χ. ήταν η εκδίκαση υποθέσεων φόνων εκ προμελέτης, εμπρησμών και ιεροσυλιών, και αφετέρου θρησκευτικός με αρκετά ιερά σπουδαιότερο των οποίων ήταν το των Σεμνών θεαινών ή Ευμενίδων η πιθανή θέση του οποίου προσδιορίζεται σε βορειοδυτική κοιλότητα του βράχου της Ακρόπολης.
Επίσης στη βόρεια πλαγιά του λόφου εντοπίστηκε νεκροταφείο με θολωτούς και λαξευμένους τάφους που ανάγεται στη μυκηναϊκή και γεωμετρική περίοδο (1600 - 700 π.Χ.). Εικάζεται πως αυτό ήταν και το αρχαιότερο νεκροταφείο της αρχαίας Αθήνας. Από τον 6ο αιώνα π.Χ. φαίνεται πως στο λόφο αυτόν αναπτύχθηκε οικισμός που αποτελούσε μέρος του αριστοκρατικού δήμου της Μελίτης στον οποίο και ανήκουν τα διάφορα θεμέλια οικιών, δαπέδων φρεάτων και αγωγών που έχουν αποκαλυφθεί κατά την αρχαιολογική έρευνα.
Περίπου το 51 μ.Χ. ο Απόστολος Παύλος οδηγήθηκε στον Άρειο Πάγο, όπου και κήρυξε για πρώτη φορά το Χριστιανισμό στους Αθηναίους. Από το κήρυγμά του εκείνο φαίνεται να προσηλύτισε δύο ακροατές,τον επιφανή Διονύσιο Αρεοπαγίτη τον σημερινό προστάτη Άγιο της Αθήνας, που κατά την παράδοση ήταν και ο πρώτος επίσκοπος της πόλης, και μία γυναίκα, τη Δάμαρι.
Κατά την ύστερη ρωμαϊκή περίοδο (4ος - 6ος αιώνας μ.Χ.) στη βόρεια πλαγιά του λόφου και πάνω από τ΄ αρχαία κτίσματα των κλασσικών χρόνων ανεγέρθηκαν τέσσερις πολυτελείς επαύλεις που πιθανότερα ανήκαν σε σοφιστές και λειτουργούσαν ως φιλοσοφικές σχολές.
Στα μέσα του 16ου αιώνα στη κορυφή του λόφου ανεγέρθηκε χριστιανικός ναός προς τιμή του Διονυσίου του Αρεοπαγίτη που ήταν τρίκλιτος σε ρυθμό βασιλικής με νάρθηκα κεντρική αψίδα και πρόθεση ο οποίος καταστράφηκε από σεισμό πιθανόν το 1601. Στα ΒΔ. του ναού αυτού υπήρχε Μητροπολιτικό καθίδρυμα που διατηρήθηκε μέχρι τον 17ο αιώνα. Αυτό ήταν ένα διώροφο οίκημα με πολλά δωμάτια στο περίβολο του οποίου υπήρχαν αποθήκες μέχρι και σταφυλοπιεστήρια. Τα τελευταία αυτά οικοδομήματα καταστράφηκαν περί το 1800 ενώ τα ερείπια αυτών απομακρύνθηκαν επί εποχής του Βασιλέως Όθωνα.
Σήμερα Άρειος Πάγος εκτός από λόφος είναι και το ανώτατο ακυρωτικό δικαστήριο της πολιτικής και ποινικής δικαιοσύνης της Ελλάδας.
