Argo Gold Mine
n 1893 construction of the Argo Tunnel Began. It would be 17 years before it would reach Central City, over 4.5 miles away. The tunnel would provide water drainage, ventilation and economical transportation of the gold bearing ore from the many mines it would intersect along the way.
The Argo Mill was constructed to process the gold bearing ore from these mines. When completed, the Argo would be the largest mill of its type in the world. The mill processed over 100 million dollars of gold ore at the old time prices of $18.00 to $35.00 per ounce and stands today as a memorial to the hard rock miners of the day when GOLD WAS KING!

Argo Goldmine & Mill
We toured the Argo Tunnel and Mine. Great place to see and learn about the history of mining in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. This mill is pretty nicely preserved and they do a good job sharing the history of the site, and how the equipment was used. You get to go into the tunnel portal as well.

We were here for almost four hours, and are looking forward to visiting again soon.
First of all, it's outside, I like that! Walking through the tunnel was a great experience. I love the mountains, so being IN it, was great and quite a different experience than driving though it at 55MPH.
The mine area overlooks much of Idaho Springs and has some neat equipment laying around to photograph.
The red color of the rusted steel wheels and gears, mining cars, engines, and buckets, great shadow effects, make this a photographers feast.
The Argo Mine and Mill is a historic landmark. When you hear, read and see the stories you can go back in time and gain a real appreciation for the brilliant design of the mill, the people that designed it, lived and died in and for it.
The mill and its equipment were designed in a day when 3D design studio programs, 8 cyliner-diesel motors and computer generated calculations were not available. Dedication to progress, overcoming obstacles with what is currently available, and creative inovative thinking to meet a need, are some of the components you see woven through the Argo. It's a real treat,...kind of like striking Gold!!!
The Argo is a real Goldmine...

Old Stage Road & Gold Camp Road In Colorado - September 16, 2018
Time lapse of twenty two mile drive from Colorado Springs to Victor, seven miles on Old Stage Road and the remainder on Gold Camp Road. This was a rail line (built in 1900 and known as the Short Line) for carrying ore down to the mills from the Cripple Creek Mining District. It became a toll road (known as the Corley Mountain Highway) in the 1920s, then was taken over by the US Forest Service in 1939 when they provided the current appellation. It is also known as Forest Service Road 368. Notice the narrow rock cuts and the tunnel made for the train. Aspen trees are showing their September color.
