Aritsugu is a Japanese knife and cooking utensil producer and store, founded by Fujiwara Aritsugu in 1560. It is one of the oldest knifemakers in Japan. Aritsugu was involved in the production of swords and was appointed a supplier for the Imperial House of Japan. We visited their flagship store in Kyoto at Nishiki market where I bought this knife and one of the young masters showed me how to sharpen it.

Nishiki Market in Kyoto - Exploring Japan with Wageofsins
Today we take a walk through Nishiki Market (錦市場), a strip of lane ways packed to the gills with traditional Japanese foods and snacks, fresh seafood, Kyoto specialties and other odds and ends. It is located one block north and parallel to Shijō Street (四条通) and west of Teramachi Street (寺町通). It also holds one of the longest running knife shops in Japan, named Aritsugu, which was founded in 1560.
At the top of the market you'll find a series of more modern shops going the opposite direction, as well as a surprisingly peaceful shrine for such a busy area.
Although usually packed with tourists and locals alike, Nishiki Market is a great experience for anyone visiting Kyoto.

If you ever missed out on visiting Japan during the Cherry Blossom season, do not worry. During the fall it can be just as beautiful. Not only is the weather in November quite pleasing and less crowded than Hanami season, the colours of fall are absolutely breathtaking!

With autumn leaves red and gold falling from the trees, walking though the reflective streets after a rainfall, traditional wooden Machiya merchant houses and geisha's wandering the streets of Gion it really feels like you are transported back to the Tokugawa period.
Don't miss out on the Kinkakuji Golden Pavillion and the Arashiyama bamboo forest nearby, and eating streetfood at the Nishiki market. This is also the place where Aritsugu is located, a famous Japanese knife merchant. They have the finest blades one could wish for in a kitchen and they even carve out your name on it.
We visited the Kiyomizu-dera temple, one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The temple is massive, made out of wood and not a single nail used in the entire structure. The view from the wooden veranda was just incredible.
We visited Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社, Fushimi Inari Taisha). It is an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of vermilion Torii gates, which straddle a network of trails behind its main buildings. The trails lead into the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari, which stands at 233 meters and belongs to the shrine grounds. This place is also famous due to the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, in which the young geisha is wandering through the Torii gates.
Nara-city is known for its deer, which roam around freely. In fact, thousands of deers come down from the hills and temples to visit the city in the daytime, and return once the sun goes down. According to legends, deers in Japan are messengers of the Gods and have become a symbol of the city. The deers are really quite tame and will even respectfully bow to ask for food.
In Osaka, we are once again transported to the future, in which streets are illuminated with neon, bright displays, Jpop music all around, filled with eateries and entertainment. We had one of our best meals in Japan at a tuna Specialized restaurant (Thanks foodblogger Mark Wiens), ordering tuna in various ways, grilled, bowled, raw, seared and minced. So delicious!
At Universal Studios Osaka we got to test ride their latest attraction: Harry Potter! Simply amazing how they recreated Hogwarts, the forest and the entire castle (outside as well as inside).

This short film was entirely shot in 4k resolution with a Samsung Galaxy S6. It's camera sensor is quite impressive, especially when you combine it with a handheld electronic stabilizer. I used the Lanparte hhg-01 to stabilize my shots. Editting and post-processing were done in Final Cut Pro X.

Aritsugu is a Japanese knife and cooking utensil producer and store, founded by Fujiwara Aritsugu in 1560, making it one of the oldest still existing knifemakers in Japan.
Aritsugu was originally involved in the production of swords and was appointed a supplier for the Imperial House of Japan, before the requirement for new blades diminished due to a more peaceful era emerging through the influence of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period in the 17th and 18th centuries.It was during this period that Aritsugu switched its primary production from swords to the pointed knives that were used to carve statues of Buddha. The late 19th century Meiji period saw a strong growth in demand for kitchen knives and cooking utensils developing in Japan thanks to a stable government and improved living conditions. Aritsugu used its experience in blade production to focus on this emerging market
