Salida East Campground - Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area
Salida East Campground is located a mile or 2 east of Salida Colorado along the Arkansas River and is open year-round.
Most of the campgrounds in the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area have been reconstructed in recent years, except for Salida East. It was hard to tell where some campsites were located, due to people driving all over. Hopefully, Salida East will get rebuilt in 2019.

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) and its avid patrons follow the beautiful but unpredictable, wild-to-mild river for 150 miles from the historic town of Leadville, through the Sawatch mountain range and Colorado's tallest mountains, all the way down to Pueblo on the edge of Colorado's plains.
Ruby Mountain Campground - Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

▶︎ World Class River Rafting
Hecla Junction is one of my favorite sites. The campground is north of Salida Colorado on the Arkansas River. This is the busy spot at the end of the commercial river rafting run. You access the campground from the main highway along a windy dirt road. It takes about 25 minutes to reach the river and the campground which is next to the boat ramp. The campground has great facilities and well designed sites. They have a few sites with views of the river on north end of the site. Each campground site has boulders to define the site, gravel base for tents, picnic tables, and fire rings. The toilets are very clean and well maintained and a camp host is on site. The highlight here is the river. We had fast moving water this summer with class III and IV rapids. It’s a great run from Buena Vista down to Hecla Junction. If the Hecla Junction Campground is full, we counted at least 3 dispersed sites on road leading down to the river including a BLM dispersed site.

▶︎ Great Pricing Open Year Round
I was hoping to go here to see some people launching their white water rafting, however that was not the case when I was visiting. Despite being open year round there was not a lot of activity going on when I was there in late October during midweek. The surroundings were amazing, however I opted to not stay because a cold front was coming in to push through some snow, probably the reason why people where not rafting.
The sites for camping were nice, there were many campgrounds to choose from along the area and sites were large and spacious. Most importantly they were reasonably priced at only $18. Part of what makes these camps be able to not close their doors seasonally is their vault toilets, with no running water at camp they do not have to worry about pipes bursting or issues relating to this so camp can keep going.
Sites are equipped with traditional picnic table, fire ring and grill and there is a changing area at the campground too just to get out of the gusty winds and provide a bit of shelter for getting cleaned up each day.
The Salida campground does have a boat ramp and launch right beside camp and fully backs up to the river itself so you have amazing views from any campsite. You really can't lose with this place!!
TIPS:
Come prepared there is limited cell service here and no store on site so you will be needing to go to town if you forget anything.
Check weather conditions, though open year round you will want to prepare if cold fronts are passing through as this area is already a bit cooler being so close to the waters edge.

This is a small campground that is right next to the San Miguel river. There are only 3 developed campsite spots but there is also a very large and level parking area that could accommodate any size RV. Has toilets, but no drinking water. This is a very nice out of the way campsite that has a ton of wildlife around, great camping, and very scenic views.

Russel lakes is a small gravel lot that allows overnight parking in self contained vehicles. As the wildlife viewing area might suggest, there is TONS of wildlife here. Lots of trails, grassy meadows, huge lakes, and the backdrop of the mountains make for awesome trail walks in the evening. There is an artesian well here as well for free water, and vault toilets!

Arkansas Headwaters - In A Colorado Minute (Week 204)
--- ---
The Arkansas River actually begins its journey in Colorado, where its waters are derived from the Rocky Mountains snowpack. A good section around the early part, or headwaters, of the Arkansas River have been designated as a Colorado State Park called Arkansas Headwaters State Park.
Conveniently, because I purchased a year-pass for Lory State Park near Fort Collins, we're able to get in for free at all 42 Colorado State Parks. So on our drive back from a road trip during Week 200, we stopped at a section of the river that is one of the most popular river boating (whitewater rafting, etc.) areas in the United States - and great for trout fishing, as well. I really didn't expect it to be that beautiful. Nor did I plan on shooting a weekly video about this place, so I didn't even take the tripod out of the car - hence some shaky footage and a few still photos, with which I replaced the same images as video at the very last minute before uploading.
We were so taken by how gorgeous this area was that we spent most of the afternoon hiking around and then basking in the sun on the top of a small peak just looking around at the wonderful vista. A classic Happy Place.
We had parked the car at the Hecla camp grounds and, before we left, picked our two favorite spots with views of the river to pitch our tent as soon as it gets warm. I can't wait! And I'm pretty sure I'll show you a video of what this place looks like in the summer in a few months...
Also, I want to figure out which train line runs along the river here. I suspect it's the Royal Gorge Route - but it might just be regular Amtrak line - if it's even a track for people transportation. One of my top priorities this spring/summer is to get on one of the Rocky Mountains trains and share a video of that trip with you!
The lovely song in this video is the instrumental version of Chainsaw by Josh Woodward, who makes hundreds of his songs available through a Creative Commons license. How awesome is that?
