Armstrong BC is a 15-20 minute drive from Vernon BC in Canada's North Okanagan Valley.
Kate Armstrong - Art and Technology
This is Kate Armstrong's presentation at Sam Sullivan's 33rd Public Salon on February 7th, 2019 at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre in Vancouver, BC.
Kate Armstrong is a Vancouver-based artist and curator with 20 years of experience in the cultural sector with focus on intersections between art and technology. Her practice has included events in urban space, generative text systems, and experimental digital forms. As a curator she has produced exhibitions, events and publications in art and technology internationally. She founded Upgrade Vancouver as part of an international network of organizations in 30 cities, was a founder of the Goethe Satellite that produced ten exhibitions in Vancouver between 2011-2013, and is past President of the Board of the Western Front. Armstrong was an Artistic Director of the 21st International Symposium on Electronic Art which partnered with 15 galleries and organizations including the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Museum of Vancouver to present the work of 150 artists in 2015.
She is the founder of Startland, which has raised over 500K to support free training for immigrants and refugees who wish to enter the technology sector. Armstrong serves on the boards of BC Artscape and the New Forms Festival and has acted on juries for SIGGRAPH, the City of Vancouver, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and Creative BC. Armstrong is on the Creative City Strategy External Advisory Committee with the City of Vancouver and is a member of the standing jury for digital art with the Canada Council for the Arts.
Armstrong has written for P.S.1/MoMa, Blackflash, Fillip, SubTerrain, and the Kootenay School of Writing, contributed to DAMP: Contemporary Vancouver Media Arts (Anvil Press, 2008), and is the editor of Ten Different Things (2018), Art and Disruption (2015), and Electric Speed (2013). She is the author of Crisis & Repetition: Essays on Art and Culture (Michigan State University Press, 2002) in addition to numerous essays. She recently contributed to For Machine Use Only: Contemplations on algorithmic epistemology (&&& c/o The New Centre for Research and Practice, 2016). Other books include Medium (2011), Source Material Everywhere (2011), and Path (2012). Armstrong’s artworks are held in public and private collections including Rhizome, the Rose Goldsen Archive in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections at Cornell University, the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections at York University, the Library of the Printed Web, and the Whitney Museum of American Art as part of Lorna Mill’s Ways of Something (2017).
As Director of Living Labs and the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship at Emily Carr University of Art + Design she develops upwards of 30 art, design, research and technology projects a year and specializes in intersectional partnerships.

Montreal museum's stolen art recovered
In 2011, someone slipped away from a Montreal museum with a limestone carving from the 500 B.C. and a marble head from the Roman Empire. One of the artifacts has now been recovered, but the mystery of who stole it and how it ended up in Edmonton remains unsolved. Mike Armstrong reports.

Helene Girard Art Exhibit, HEMORRHAGE
Helene Girard's exhibition, HEMORRHAGE: The language of medicine in the language of Art, associates medical language to the language of geometric shapes and recognizable subject matter.
Medical terminology is a vocabulary built from Latin and Greek and is described by combining prefixes, root words and suffixes to form meanings relating to the human body, conditions, processes and associated components. Analyzing the words, by dividing them into component parts and using the basic rules to combine the terms, make the understanding of complex terminology easier.
In Helene's art, geometric circles represent the vowel 'O' which in language is added to a word root for easy pronunciation. She also attempts to alleviate complex terms by selecting familiar and recognizable subjects. Through this process, her representation of the terminology may succumb to a surrealistic approach to arouse the visual cortex.
Image She is inspired by Pablo Picasso's quote «A painting only lives by the one who is looking at it.» and by her own emotions. In retrospect, she imagined being somewhere else at this point in her life but with that said, she is proud of her accomplishments: Her adored children, her art, her goals and her experiences are crucial to her creations.
Helene Girard, a Francophone Winnipeg artist, was born in St-Ludger de Milot, Québec in 1961. Her parents affectionately nicked named her Lenie, a signature and label that stuck and clearly identifies her artwork today. Helene studied interior design in Saguenay Lac St-Jean and Art at Cégep du Vieux Montréal. She discovered Manitoba through a self fulfilling and rewarding youth program called KATIMAVIK.
Image Helene has taught after school art programs, was a guest artist at rural events in Manitoba, and was mentioned in a published article Hope from tragedy from Muskoka Magazine in Ontario. Her artwork was also featured on the cover of Uniquely Manitoba's Catalog in 2010 . She was a guest artist at the fund raising event Jazz for child health BC for Nanaimo General Hospital. Currently, she works with acrylics on large format canvases.
She has moved from past subjects of wild life pen and inks, commission works on old cream cans, portraiture, and 'advertising art'. If her paintings come alive or touch people in many different ways, she feels she has done her job as an artist.

Out and about we drive along lower Lough Erne to Belleek Pottery, have a cuppa, take in the museum, have a guided tour of the factory and dander round the excellent gift shop. This visit was the highlight of our Fermanagh mini break, a real treat. Don't you miss it! Today Belleek pottery has a thriving online busines where clients can order personalised giftware items.
Belleek Pottery Ltd is a porcelain company that began trading in 1884 as the Belleek Pottery Works Company Ltd in Belleek, County Fermanagh.
Today the factory employs around 50 skilled workers, many who have been there for three decades and more!
The pottery museum contains pieces dating back to when the pottery was started in 1857. Belleck lays claim to be the oldest working pottery on the whole island of Ireland.
History
Pottery in Belleek began around 1849, after John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited his father's estate. Seeking to provide employment for his tenants, who had been affected by the Irish potato famine and, being an amateur mineralogist, ordered a geological survey of his land. He found that the local area was rich in minerals particularly Feldspar. Fieldspar was a vital ingredient for glassmaking and hard durable ceramics.
Bloomfield, realizing the potential, went into partnership with London architect Robert Williams Armstrong and Dublin merchant David McBirney. To help things along Bloomfield managed to get a railway line built to Belleek so that coal could be delivered with which to fire kilns.
Building started on the pottery in 1858. Initially starting with domestic products. It wasn't until 1863 that small amounts of the Parian porcelain for which Belleek is famous for was successfully produced. By 1865, the prestige of the company had increased enough that its market included Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, and the United States, and customers included the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria and the nobility.
Eugene Sheerin (Artist & Poet) worked as an artist at Belleek pottery late 19th century. One of his paintings Innocence (1879) of a young mother and child executed on a Belleek plate is on display at the Royal Victoria & Albert museum London.

A massive 52 ft. wall mural art @ the Vancouver Art Gallery
For the BC Pavilion during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games inside Vancouver Art Gallery, Alex Beim was assigned the role of Experience Director for the digital media room. This massive 52 ft. wall mural art is a Company Policy project that was commissioned by VANOC. Artists included Carson Ting, Jason Nowland & Mike Nowland.
