Croatia Travel Video (Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar, Zagreb, Korcula)
Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia, is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. Its capital Zagreb forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with twenty counties. Croatia has an area of 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and a population of 4.28 million, most of whom are Roman Catholics.
In this video we visit Zagreb, Split, Hvar, Korcula and finally Dubrovnik.
Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. The estimated population of the city in 2018 is 809,932. The population of Zagreb urban agglomeration is slightly above 1.1 million inhabitants and it makes approximately a quarter of a total population of Croatia.
Split is the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia. It lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea and is spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings. An intraregional transport hub and popular tourist destination, the city is linked to the Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula.
Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, located off the Dalmatian coast, lying between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula. Approximately 68 km (42.25 mi) long, with a high east-west ridge of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite, the island of Hvar is unusual in the area for having a large fertile coastal plain, and fresh water springs.
Korčula is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. It has an area of 279 km2 (108 sq mi); 46.8 km (29.1 mi) long and on average 7.8 km (4.8 mi) wide — and lies just off the Dalmatian coast. Its 15,522 inhabitants (2011) make it the second most populous Adriatic island after Krk and the most populous Croatian island not connected to the mainland by a bridge. The population are almost entirely ethnic Croats (95.74%). The island is twinned with Rothesay in Scotland.
Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its total population is 42,615 (census 2011). In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.
TRAVEL SERIES CROATIA: EXPLORING FAMILY HISTORY CROATIA FOR A FRIEND |Traveller's NEST NZ|
PODGORA, SPLIT - DALMATIA COUNTY, CROATIA
Podgora is a small fishing village or Selo in the Split - Dalmatia County of Croatia. It is on the Adriatic sea, 65 km South of Split or 135 km North of Dubrovnik.
We stopped village to explore some family history of one of my dear friend, Alesich or Aleskic. It is the village, where her grandmother grew up. The family have never returned like a lot of other Croatians.
The name of the region, Dalmatia, stems from an Illyrian tribe called Dalmatae. It later became a Roman province. The Croats arrived in the area in 8th century, who occupied most of the Hinterland up in the hills. Croatian and Roman elements began to intermix in language and culture.
The fishing villagers lived at the port, but all other villagers lived up in the hills. Historically this was done for protection, as the pirates were very fierce in the area. They came all the way from Northern Africa. As protection a treaty was signed with the Republic of Venice in early 1400s to offer the people protection. It turned out to be the longest lasting rule of Dalmatia from 1420 to 1797.
Between 1815 - 1918, it was a province of Austro Hungarian empire. After the defeat of the Empire in WWI, Dalmatia was divided between the Kingdoms of Serbs,Croats, Slovenes and Italians.
After WWII, SFR Yugoslavia took total control over the area.
My friend's grandparents immigrated to New Zealand in 1939, in a very difficult time.
From 1929 to 1935, the doors were closed to immigrants from Croatia and only reopened after the Labour Party came into power in 1935. For the next five years, large number of Croatian immigrated to NZ.
In 1939, as the war broke out in Europe, the 'Yugoslavs' in NZ, whether born or not in NZ, were faced with resentment and suspicions of disloyalty. As Yugoslav aligned itself with Nazi Germany. They were difficult times to immigrate.
The one beautiful thing, I have found out is that Oratia was formed by people from Podgora.. hence why you will see names like the Nola, Sumic(h) in this now suburb of Auckland. There are some many things, that were similar like the phoenix palms and grapes. They were most probably bought with the first immigrants.
Despite some our discovers, it makes you understand how difficult things were in Europe in between wars. We as grandchildren of immigrants go looking for the answers, to understand our grand parents and parents, and what influenced their lives and shaped them into who they were.
It became almost for me a personal journey of discovery followed by many hours, as our wifi permitted, on the phone to NZ to tell some of these stories.
What a gift to give a friend..

Omiš / Dalmatia / Croatia / Kroatien /Omiš in4k/Pointers Travel agency
Hi there. take a look at this video of Omiš maybe this will help you to decide where to go this summer.
About Omiš
Omiš is a town and port in the Dalmatia region of Croatia and is a municipality in the Split-Dalmatia County. The town is situated approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) south-east of Croatia's second largest city, Split. It is located at the mouth of Cetina River. Omiš is best known for the traditional festival of the Dalmatian a cappella singing groups. This festival is the highlight of Omiš's summer, the expression of the town's beauty. Omiš's Summer Festival - during which various concerts and recitals are performed - takes place at the plazas and in churches.
Interesting history of Omiš
In the past, Omiš was well known for its Pirates of Almissa (Omiški gusari) whose ships, called Sagittas (Arrows), brought them fame and fortune due to their ability to attack quickly and retreat into the mouth of river Cetina, beyond the reach of bigger and better armed sea-faring vessels. At one point, Pirates of Almissa allied themselves with the highlanders of the Poljica Principality (Poljička Republika) which allowed them to harass the seaborne trade without fear of an attack from land.
Monuments and landmarks of Omiš
Due to its rich and interesting history, Omiš remains a home to some very interesting monuments and buildings including Mirabella Fortress (Peovica) and Starigrad Fortress (Fortica) from 13th and 15th century, respectively. Omiš also has a number of churches including the Church of Saint Euphemia from the early 6th century as well as the Renaissance church of the Holy Spirit from the 15th century.
Omiš is certainly a beautiful little town worth putting on your bucket list. Located only 25 kilometers from the second largest city in Croatia, it offers countless possibilities for summer activities without the crowds of Split.

Croatia Sailing Trip | Part 8 | VIS Island - Komiža town | Stiniva Beach
Part 8 video footage of Our Croatia sailing trip shows some sight seeing from the Island of VIS, its marina mainland shore and Fort George along with a swim stop in the beautiful Stiniva beach.
Vis is a small Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The farthest inhabited island off the Croatian mainland, Vis had a population of 3,617 in 2011. Vis has an area of 90.26 square kilometres (34.85 square miles). Its highest point is Hum, which is 587 metres (1,926 feet) above sea level. The island's two largest settlements are the town of Vis on the island's eastern side (the settlement for which the island was originally named) and Komiža on its western coast.
Once known for its thriving fishing industry in the late 19th and early 20th century, the main present-day industries on the island are agriculture and tourism. Vis town and Komiža are also seats of separate administrative municipalities which cover the entire island and nearby islets, which are both part of Split-Dalmatia County. In 2017 Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was filmed on location on Vis.
Vis was inhabited by the time of the Neolithic period. In the 4th century BC, the Greek tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius the Elder, founded the colony Issa on the island. Later, it became an independent polis, and even minted its own money and founded its own colonies, the most notable of which was Aspálathos (the modern-day city of Split). In the 1st century BC, the island was held by the Liburnians. Its importance in the region ended with the first Illyro-Roman war (29-219 BC). Having sided with Pompeus during the period of civil struggles in Rome, became an oppidum civium Romanorum in 47 BC.
Until 1797, the island was under the rule of the Republic of Venice. During this time large settlements developed along the coastline (Comisa (now Komiža) and Lissa (now Vis)). Administratively, the island of Lissa was for centuries bound to the island of Lesina, now named Hvar. The Venetian influence is still recognizable in architecture found on the island, and some vocabulary of the Croatian dialect spoken locally is Venetian in origin.[citation needed]
After the short-lived Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, with Italian as the official language, the island was ruled by the Austrian Empire from 1814. It maintained its Italian name of Lissa. After the end of World War I, it was under Italian rule again in the period from 1918 to 1921, according to the provisions of the 1915 Treaty of London, before it was ceded to Kingdom of Yugoslavia as part of the 1920 Treaty of Rapallo.
The sea to the north of the island was the location of two battles:
on 13 March 1811, a small Royal Navy squadron under the command of Captain William Hoste, defeated a larger French squadron in the Battle of Lissa (1811)
on 20 July 1866, the smaller Austrian fleet, under Admiral Tegetthoff, attacked the Italian fleet, under Admiral Persano, defeating the larger Italian force and sinking the Italian ironclad Re d'Italia in the Battle of Lissa (1866).

iFly TV: Mairead Scully from Canada won a trip to experience Split
Rare are the regions that can be as proud of so many natural varieties as Split - Dalmatia County can. The mountain chain, including one of Croatia's highest mountain, separate Zagora with its continental characteristics from the Mediterranean beach atmosphere. This region is among the most beautiful in the world. Here you can find both shallow waters and the open sea, wild rapids and peaceful river beds, the most beautiful Mediterranean islands alongside rough cliffs with endemic species in the middle of the open sea, deep lakes and the still unexplored richness of the underground caves.
It's hard to imagine that within such a small geographical territory like the Split-Dalmatia County there are so many possibilities to do various sports and activities. Sea, rivers, mountains, forests, rocks .... perfect terrains to charge as well as to discharge your adrenaline, regardless of intensity. People here obviously carry in their genes information on all terrains because there are no where in the world so many top athletes and Olympians comparing to the number of inhabitants, as there are here.
Geographical richness of Split-Dalmatia County is closely related to the wealth of its gastronomy. On a small area there are facing the contradiction of past time flavor the creative cuisine of today; aroma of pristine nature with two grains of salt, thrown over the hill by the south wind, or the smell of komin (a fireplace) and komaštre (a chain and a hook for hanging cooking pots over the fire on the fireplace) brought by the northern wind.
Mairead shares her experience in this video!
Riviera Kaštela in 4k / Dalmatia / Croatia / Kroatien / 4k /
Riviera Kaštela
An unbroken line of seven towns, clustered around old towers, or castles (the local word for which is kaštel) welcomes visitors with the historical tales of the Kaštela Riviera. In the summer nights, the stages of Kaštela host traditional Dalmatian music and tell the tale of their own local Romeo and Juliet. Kaštela Riviera shows off its past in the shape of an impressive sequence of sixteen fortifications equipped with rotating bridges. Along these old strongholds, the seven towns which were once separate - Sućurac, Gomilica, Kambelovac, Lukšić, Stari, Novi and Štafilić are nowadays jointly called the City of Kaštela.
Activities in Kaštela
Kaštela Riviera is situated along the coast of Kaštela Bay and every place has beautiful beaches where you can enjoy the sea.
When you get hungry there are numerous restaurants where you can try delicious local cuisine and exquisite wine.
When it comes to nightlife, Kaštela fosters a long tradition of hosting a summer festival of culture and entertainment from the beginning of July to the end of August, during which period over 100 different events are held; from classical concerts to local Klape groups, theatre plays and fisherman's nights. Kaštela has something for everyone!
Kaštela is no stranger to adrenaline activities as well! Here, guests can try sailing, paddling, tennis, scuba diving, mountain climbing, hiking and cycling.
Natural heritage
Beauty of Kaštela inspired many poets, including the famous poet Andrija Kačić Miočić. In Kaštel Štaflić you will find an olive tree by the name of Mastrinka. It is a huge tree that is over 1500 years old and is assumed that it's brought from either south Italy or Greece. It was declared a monument to nature in 1990.
Another important natural monument is an oak tree near the Romanesque Church of Saint Cosmas and Damian in Kaštel Gomilica which attracts visitors with its size and beauty.
There is also a park over century old in Kaštel Stari and many other mysteries awaiting curious visitors who will uncover all the secrets of Kaštela.
If beautiful scenes from our video made you fall in love with Kaštela, we're not sorry!
Make your way over there this summer!
