Driving in Death Valley, California and Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada
Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California. It is the lowest, driest, and hottest area in North America.
Death Valley's Badwater Basin is the point of the lowest elevation in North America, at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. This point is 84.6 miles (136.2 km) east-southeast of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m).[2] Death Valley's Furnace Creek holds the record for the highest reliably reported air temperature in the world, 134 °F (56.7 °C) on July 10, 1913.
The Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wildlife refuge located in the Amargosa Valley of southern Nye County, in southwestern Nevada. It is directly east of Death Valley National Park, and is 90 mi (140 km) west-northwest of Las Vegas.[1]
The refuge was created on June 18, 1984 to protect an extremely rare desert oasis in the Southwestern United States. It is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Ash Meadows NWR - one of Nevada's most scenic parks.
With over 23,000 acres of wetlands, Ash Meadows NWR is a unique oasis in the otherwise desolate Amargosa Valley. While the hiking at the reserve is short and sweet, the area has great birdwatching, a chance to see pupfish, and unique history, like that of Andrew Jackson Longstreet, a 19th century vagabond. (“Notched his gun for every man killed/local sheriffs were not thrilled/five grooves places upon that gun/Jack regretted only one”). For those visiting Death Valley, it is a great nearby stop.

Time Travelers event at Ash Meadows - exploring our cultural traditions!
More than 75 people traveled back in time December 11 at the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge Longstreet Boardwalk -- the site of Jack Longstreet's restored cabin -- to experience life in the early 1900s.
The Time Travelers event demonstrated various ways that the Ash Meadows environment directly sustained people throughout history by providing food, medicine, material for shelters and tools, fire, water -- all the necessities of life. The goal was for visitors to come away with a deeper appreciation for these natural resources today, by remembering the critical role they played in human lives historically.
Special thanks to John Marsh, Kelly Curtis, Frank King, Judy Palmer, Susan Sorrells, Mary Burke King, and Sue Palmer for donating their time, talent, and expertise for this event.
