Tail of the Dragon & Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
The Appalachian Mountains are the oldest mountain chain in North America. They sweep from Newfoundland to Alabama. The Appalachian Mountains are made up of mountains, ridges, and valleys. The Great Smoky mountains are in this region. They run from Tennessee to North Carolina. The Blue Ridge mountains are the backbone of the system. They extend from Georgia to Pennsylvania. In the Appalachian mountains there is Mt. Mitchell. This is the highest mountain on the eastern coast.
The name Appalachian comes from the Apalachee Indians. A stream of pioneers first moved to the mountains where woodsmen found valleys and large gaps which made it difficult to travel. Later roads and trains ran through the valleys and gaps and tied the nation together.
Today, valleys and some small hillsides serve as small farms and orchards, and here and there are business, ranging from small craft shops to large paper and rayon manufacturing plants. In the north the farmers will grow potatoes, wheat, and they raise dairy products. In the south the farmers will grow corn, tobacco, and raise poultry. In the valleys they grow alfalfa, hay, and apples. Deciduous forests cover most of the Appalachian Mountains. Trees in this region consist of hickories, maples, and oaks. They are beautiful when they are changing colors, in the fall. The trees are shipped to North Carolina furniture makers. Coal is found in much of the region. It is a major industry, and employs many people. Also produced in the upper land is iron, stone, oil, and timber. The tumbling streams have been harnessed to supply hydroelectric power. This provides the region with electricity.
Tourism is an outstanding industry. Rivers, lakes, and state parks provide lots of recreational activities. In the winter it snows in this region, and people come from all over to ski. Trails and parkways serve many hikers and motorists. Many people come in the summer and fall to hike along the Appalachian Natural Scenic Trail. This trail is two hundred miles long, and is the longest foot path on the eastern coast. Go rafting , fishing , and take a balloon ride trough this region.
Some people come to the Appalachian mountains to take a drive through the scenic beauty. You will drive past farms, lovely trees, and running streams. The Appalachian people are very kind, down-to-earth people. Many of them own bed and breakfast places, and would be glad to have you. Many travelers come to visit Mount Mitchell National Park. It was established 1915,and was named after Dr. Mitchell. He was a scientist that was sent to the mountain to accurately measure it, but he died in a fall from the mountain. There is a memorial in his honor on Mount Mitchell.
The Appalachian Mountains are a perfect place for a relaxing vacation. Visitors can enjoy the fresh, clean air and see the true beauty of North America: the Appalachian Mountains.

Staying Safe While Welcoming In The New Year
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Quiet streets were the scene in downtown Asheville during the noon hour on Wednesday, but by nightfall its expected to be a hot spot for New Years Eve celebrations.
With balloons and champagne already on hand, restaurants like Twisted Laurel on College Street, hope the busy night ahead will entice new customers to stop in throughout the new year.
It's great exposure to this corner to bring people in and them say oh wow this is really a nice area to be, let's walk on down another block and check it out, see what's going on, says Owner of Twisted Laurel, Angelo Karnezis.
As folks head to restaurants, bars or other locations to celebrate, State Troopers want to remind everyone to plan ahead to stay safe, especially if you're drinking. Don't get behind the wheel. Use your options that you have, which is taxi service, designated drivers, or just stay at home, says Trooper Christine Dotson.
And if you're caught drinking and driving, it can mean big consequences. Penalties can be a loss of your license if convicted, jail time, court costs, fines, lawyer fees, possibly lose your job, says Trooper Dotson.
New Year's Eve is also a big night for taxi companies. Manager of two local taxi companies, Larry Stevenson, says all of their vehicles will be on the road tonight and they're ready to take your calls.
We're looking for a lot of people to be out, celebrate the new year that's coming in and we look forward to meeting them and picking them up and giving them a cab ride, he says.
Stevenson says because the City of Asheville regulates the taxi companies, you can expect to pay $2.50 to get in a cab, and $2.50 per mile traveling within the county, just like any other night.
There are numerous taxi services near Asheville, and we've listed some of those below:

Victim Identified: Fatal Burnsville Wreck
One person is killed after after a county van carrying children crashes and bursts into flames on US-19 East between Burnsville and Spruce Pine.
Highway Patrol says it happened when the van ran off the road and slammed into a guard rail. The rail punctured the gas tank and caused the vehicle to erupt into flames, and tip sideways down the embankment. Investigators say in a matter of seconds the vehicle was engulfed.
48-year-old Billy Grindstaff was trapped inside the van and pronounced dead on the scene. The four other occupants, the driver and three kindergarten-aged children, were able to get out.
The Highway Patrol says the accident is under investigation while they determine what made the vehicle veer off the road.

Inappropriate Relationship Allegations Lead To Tea
SWAIN COUNTY, N.C. -- A teacher in Swain County has been fired over allegations she had an inappropriate intimate relationship with a student.
Sierra Summer Hughes, 24, taught physical education at Swain Middle School and coached track at the high school. The school board says she gave the student rides in her car, spent time with the student outside of school and exchanged personal text messages.
The board accepted the superintendent's recommendation to dismiss Hughes on the grounds of immorality, insubordination and failure to fulfill the duties imposed on teachers under state law.
Word spread quickly around town.
But if there was something definitely inappropriate then definitely I don't think she should stay, says Priscilla Burrus. Sometimes things can happen that seem inappropriate, but there may be another explanation.
But I think we need to know more about it before we pass judgement, says Joyce Gibson.
Bill Randall graduated from Swain High School in 1998. He's not surprised by the news.
This day and age not really to be honest with you. We live in a time when a lot of crazy stuff happens.
Still others say there's likely more to the story.
Sometimes stuff isn't true though you know, Roger Stevenson said. Sometimes kids can say stuff that isn't true.
Hughes waived her right to a hearing before Swain County's Board of Education. By law this action is recorded with state education officials.
The Swain County Sheriff says no charges have been filed against Hughes, but the case remains under investigation.
Her family says their attorney has advised them not to comment to the media.
