In order to complete our 50 states, we chose to visit Asheville in North Carolina to explore. We loved it! This city is artsy, full of history and the people are welcoming. And one of the best ways to get to know the city for free is to do the walking tour.
WHO ARE WE?
We, Irwin and Victorina, left the corporate world and sold our furniture to go on an epic road trip of visiting all U.S. National Parks! Follow our journey - from letting go of our material possessions, preparing for the extended camping trip, and even the mistakes, joys, doubts and adventures we make along the way! We hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of Planet Earth.
Adventure begins in Feb 2017. We estimate this road trip will take us approximately 12 to 16 months. We know we will some amazing places and meet a lot of interesting people.
If you have an idea or suggestions for us for places to visit along the way, feel free to contact us!

Live the Life You Choose: Biltmore Park in Asheville, NC:
“Asheville is a happening place,” says Kit Cramer, President and CEO of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. “It's exciting and fun. People who come to Asheville are looking for quality of life.
“People love to experience this area, and people are really learning a lot more about what Asheville has to offer in terms of arts, music, food, outdoor activities—all those types of things,” says Kramer. “They love the beauty of the natural environment, but they also love that they can access that very quickly. We're a cosmopolitan city in a small package. So you can quickly get to a hiking trail. Or if you wanna kayak or you wanna bike, you can easily get to those things. So, we've got big city amenities within a small package.
“Asheville is attractive to a pretty broad cross section of people,” says Kramer. “We're seeing a lot of young people, a lot of creative talent moving to town because of the vibe of the place. But there are also a lot of retirees who move to the area and people with families. So it's a pretty broad cross section of people coming from around the country to live here.
“Asheville is the hub of a whole region,” says Kramer. “People come from 10 counties around Asheville, into work each day, so if you're into a rural setting, you can do that and still be able to access work here in Asheville.
“Asheville has a mixture of neighborhoods,” says Kramer. “That's one of the things that makes it really cool. You can live right downtown, or you can live in a historic neighborhood. You could live in the River Arts District. There are lots of different styles of life in this particular community.
“I think we're gonna continue to see growth in Asheville and the region over time of business and opportunity for people who wanna move here,” says Kramer. “Plus, we're gonna continue to see a growth in terms of visitorship. And once they get introduced, they're really interested in coming back here—Perhaps making it a second home location or finding a way to relocate here full time. It's a great place to be.”

Cashiers, North Carolina has its own Sliding Rock, just like Brevard!
Cashiers, North Carolina has its own Sliding Rock, just like Brevard. Cashiers Sliding Rock is a natural waterslide, created by the Chattooga River gliding over a 10-foot high rock face with a few large potholes. Cashiers Sliding Rock is a great place to bring the kids to play in the pool at the bottom of the sliding rock or take the exciting slide into the pool. Dad can bring his fishing pole and fish for some wild brown trout further downstream. This is forest service property, and no lifeguards are provided. If you pay attention and evaluate the area upon arrival, it should be a very safe experience. Directions: From the intersection of U.S.64 and 107 in Cashiers, North Carolina (the Crossroads), travel south on 107 for 1.7 miles to Whiteside Cove Road and turn right. Travel 2.7 miles where you will cross a small bridge and see a small parking area just past this bridge and to the right. There are a couple of trails that lead from two parking areas. You'll hear the rushing water once you get out of your car.

A Visit To Asheville NC, (and some beer) | MOTM VLOG #47
This city had a shroud of mystery around it for us. Everyone we met had the same reaction to the mention of Asheville: “*GASP!* You HAVE to go to Asheville! You’ll love it!” We were told it was artsy, it was modern, it was laid-back, it was a college town, it was beautiful, it had the Biltmore Estate, it had tons of good shops and restaurants, it was a hippie town, it was progressive, and it was Beer City, USA.
We grabbed our bikes and found a parking spot about a mile outside of downtown. We rode in a ways before finding a place to lock up our bikes. We walked the streets, just noticing the people about, the colorful, earthy, high-end shops, the plethora of restaurant options. The art on the walls, an old bus turned into a hip little corner coffee shop. Like any city it had homeless people. It also had street musicians staked out in front of the cafes with the outdoor seating areas.
We walked the Pack Square Park with the county courthouse and City Hall, which is one of the Art Deco Masterpieces of Asheville. In 1943, World War II pilot Col. Robert Morgan was flying his Memphis Belle bomber on a nationwide tour to sell war bonds. On his way out of Asheville, he banked the craft 60 degrees and slipped it between the Courthhouse and the City Hall.
The next day we went to check out The Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore Estate is America's largest home, built by George Vanderbilt. It is an 8000-acre beautiful and grand estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC that many claim outshine many of the castles in Europe.
We had been told it was very beautiful. The drive into the estate entrance gate was gorgeous. Tickets were required to get close enough to SEE the house. We went into the Visitor/Ticket Center to see our options. When we learned it was going to be $65 per person to gain entry, we watched the free short info video of the history of the estate, and then we left. Maybe we will come back one day when we are a little less frugal.
We debated driving all the way out to the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. After the failed attempt to see the Biltmore Estate, we figured we should at least see something. We had been told by our friends RV Love that we should go and that it was BEAUTIFUL. We couldn’t help but wonder how a brewery could be beautiful….
Yes, you should go to Asheville. It is quite an experience. Like any city, it has tons to do, lots of great restaurants, and some interesting history. Some things will cost you a lot, but if you're vacationing on a budget there are definitely some cool places where you get a lot of bang for your buck. This one definitely had a unique vibe though - a little more laid back, a little more indie and artsy.

Road Trip #427 - Blue Ridge Parkway - Mile 165-175 - Stop at Rocky Knob Visitor Center
Not many overlooks on this section of the Parkway, we re-enter at Tuggle Gap south of Roanoke, and enter Rocky Knob. We pass The Saddle Overlook and Rock Castle Gorge Overlook. Then we stop at the Rocky Knob Visitor Center to have a look around. The last half of the video is just a drive along the parkway without any overlooks or parking areas.
