Travel: Japan Kyushu Day 3 - Kumamoto Mt Aso, Takachiho Gorge, Kurokawa Onsen
From Kumamoto, we rented a car for our road trip to first
Mt Aso (too bad we cant go up because of eruption warning),
then Kurokawa Onsen for onsen hopping and visited one of the special onsen - cave onsen.
After that we spent one night at an Onsen Hotel with private onsen in our room. We had a great dinner and breakfast at the hotel.
The next morning we drive to Takachiho Gorge for boat riding before heading back to Kumamoto to return the car. Before we returned the car we stopped by to visit the famous Kumamoto Castle (Top three castle in Japan) that become ruins after 2016 earthquake. The restoration process of the castle still ongoing and we heard it might take as long as 10 years for full restoration.

[Japan / Sightseeing] Mt ASO, Kyushu Japan.
Around 2 minutes, a mystic green caldera lake is open under the helicopter.

Mount Aso (阿蘇山 Aso-san), located in Kyushu's Kumamoto prefecture, is a volcano with the largest caldera in the world.
The active volcano of Aso brings quite a significant number of tourists to the small town of Aso. Aso Tourist Information is located in its own building just beside Aso Station.
There are two cable car lines up to the mountain. Aso Nishi (west) cable car station is easily reached by bus from Aso station. The last bus back from Aso Nishi cable car station leaves at 5 pm. You can also hop on and off the bus at the bus stop near the Aso Youth Hostel. If you're driving, a toll road goes right up to the station and if you're prepared to pay, you can actually drive up to the summit of the crater.
Aso Higashi (east) cable car station can be reached by taking a local train to Miyaji station (2 stops from Aso station) and then walking up the road to the cable car station.
Mount Aso, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, recently helped to stop a powerful earthquake before it subsided on its own, researchers discovered. When a 7.1-magnitude quake struck Kumamoto, Japan, on April 16, 2016, it opened surface ruptures in a zone extending 25 miles (40 kilometers) in length. (added on Nov. 2nd, 2019)

Mt Aso Japan!
Just when I thought there is no other way to see the caldera in Mt. Aso since the cable car going up to the summit has been shut down since the Kumamoto earthquake last year, I discovered an unexpected means of transportation to make it happen.
The whole helicopter ride costs 5000 yen and lasted about 5 minutes, and can be taken at the Helipad just one bus stop before the Mt. Aso bus terminus.

A day in Kumamoto 熊本, where we walk around the city that we have never been to then we took a long bus to Aso 阿蘇.
This is a city where suffered from an earthquake few years ago, most of the iconic spot such as Kumamoto Castle is still under construction/ rebuild, but the city did a great job on keeping things organize and clean. There is always so much to learn from the people in Japan.
