Best Athens Walking Tour of the Acropolis
While in Athens for a week we decided to do a few tours of the city. While traveling the world we try and do as many tours as possible. After researching tour companies in Athens we decided to go with Athens Walking Tours and are we ever glad we did. The history lesson that was given to us from the tour guides was nothing less than spectacular. They were both fun and interesting, which made the tour so enjoyable. If we were to recommend a tour company that shows the Acropolis and the Athens old town (Plaka & Monastiraki.) Athens walking tours would be it. In our opinion going to the Acropolis without a tour guide would not be worth it. There's so much to learn that you will not know on your own. We came away from this tour feeling smarter lol and like a history boss of the area. Thank you Athens walking tours for an enjoyable day that we will never forget.
Side note, the line to get into the Acropolis is loooonnnggggg, Athens walking tours has the tickets ahead of time so you don't have to wait. That in itself is worth it.

16. Syntagma Square - located in front of the Parliament, it's the central place where many actions take place.
15. The Greek Parliament - it's interesting to see the change of guards at 11am.
14. The National Garden - located close to the Parliament, it's a green oasis, nice place for walk and relax.
13. Anafiotika - it's a scenic tiny neighborhood of Athens, part of the old historical neighborhood Plaka. It resembles a Greek island.
12. Metropolitan Cathedral
11. Ermou Street - high street shopping area
10. Panaghia Kapnikarea Church - the Greek Orthodox church is one of the oldest temples in Athens. Located on Ermou Str.
9. Monastiraki and the flea market - a shopping area with many restaurants, cafes and shops.
8. Plaka - located at the foot of Acropolis, it's oldest neighborhood in Athens. Area with many restaurants, shops, graffiti streets. Also some of the arhaeological sights are situated here.

5. New Acropolis Museum - opened to the public in 2009, nearly 4000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 sq.m.

2. Ancient Agora with the Temple of Hephaestus and Stoa of Attalos, founded 6th century BC
1. Acropolis with the Parthenon, Erechtheion and Herodus Atticus Odeon.
***Other must-visit places that are not included in this video, but definitely worth visiting are the National archaeological museum of Athens, founded in the end of the 19th century and devoted to ancient Greek art, and the The Panathenaic Stadium , where were held the first modern Olympics in 1896 .(Sorry for omitting them!)
You may also take a day trip outside of Athens. A great idea is to go on a day cruise to the Saronic Islands. You will visit three islands - Hydra, Poros and Aegina.

Free Walking Tour of the Must-Sees in Athens | Athens, Greece
We went on a free walking tour that took us to all the major tourist attractions in Athens, including the Acropolis! This was one of our favourite walking tours because Athens is just such a walkable city, with such a high concentration of archaeological sites interspersed among the hustle and bustle of a modern city. We can't get over how many things we saw in a few short hours: the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, the Temple of the Olympian Zeus, Tower of the Winds, and of course the Acropolis itself, with the Parthenon in full glory. Along the way we also sample some Athenian alcohol and even get lost on Philipappos Hill (Hill of Muses) on the way back. Such a great day! We highly recommend this tour for its ability to pack in so many things in such a short amount of time. If you only have one day in Athens, do this!

Travel tips for the city of Athens!
From the Port, it takes 20 minutes to drive to the city of Athens. If you wanted to explore Athens on your own, it'll take 1 hour by subway or 40 minutes by bus.
I don't think that's worth it. I would probably take a taxi instead. It should cost about 9 euros each way.
Once you somehow get your way in Athens the city is really walkable. All the popular sites are pretty close to one another.
Because of that, after the tour I felt like I could have explored Athens on my own and saved the money. But I'll let you judge the experience. Our tour cost 95 euros/person.
Top Sights in Athens, Greece:
1) Acropolis
If the line is long, they also have another entrance in the south side that is away from the parking lot so it much fewer people. Tickets for Acropolis is 20 euros a person.
Once you get in it is a little hike up to the top of Acropolis.
Located on the southwest slope of Acropolis is this stone theatre built in 161 AD. This theatre holds 5,000 people and was used for music concerts.
2) Parthenon
The most famous building in the citadel is the Parthenon. It is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.
3) Erechtheion
This is a Greek temple on the north side of Acropolis dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. On the south side of the building is the famous Porch of the Maidens with six female figures as supporting columns.
4) Hadrian's Gate
It was built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman emperor Hadrian. It's kind of like the roman triumphal arches. It is made out of Pentelic marble. This is the same marble used for the Parthenon.
5) Temple of Olympian Zeus
Don't waste your money going into to see the Temple of Olympian Zeus as you can actually see it for free outside the gates. If you want to walk in and admire just how tall these pillars are the entrance fee is 6 euros.
6) Panathenaic Stadium
Next stop: This multipurpose stadium is huge! It is the only stadium in the world built entirely out of marble. It used to be built out of limestone. Marble was used in 144 AD.
7) Athen's White House
I'm here visiting the white house of Greece, but I haven't even visited my own country's White House. It was built in 1897 for Prince Constantine I. Now it is the official residence of the president of the Hellenic Republic.
8) Changing of the Presidential Guards
From here you can see the changing of the presidential guards. Like the guards, in London they also can't make any facial or eye movements and must not show any expression.
9) The Academy of Athens
This building is divided into three orders: Natural Sciences, Letters and Arts, and Moral and Political Sciences.
10) Plaka
Next stop: Plaka. It's an old historical neighborhood of Athens. It is known as the neighborhood of the Gods because it's really close to Acropolis and archaeological sites. The entire area is closed to cars. Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics.

Athens (/ˈæθɨnz/;[1] Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athína, IPA: [aˈθina], Katharevousa: Ἀθῆναι, Athine, Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athēnai), is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica periphery and is one of the world's oldest cities, as its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum,[2][3] it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy,[4][5] largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent.[6] Today a cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece and it is rated as an Alpha world city.[7] In 2008, Athens was ranked the world's 32nd richest city by purchasing power[8] and the 25th most expensive[9] in a UBS study.
The Greek capital has a population of 655,780[10] (796,442 back in 2004)[11] within its administrative limits[12] and a land area of 39 km2 (15 sq mi).[13] The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) extends beyond the administrative municipal city limits, with a population of 3,074,160 (in 2011),[14] over an area of 412 km2 (159 sq mi).[13] According to Eurostat, the Athens Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) is the 7th most populous LUZ in the European Union (the 4th most populous capital city of the EU) with a population of 4,013,368 (in 2004).
The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, widely considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. The city also retains a vast variety of Roman and Byzantine monuments, as well as a smaller number of remaining Ottoman monuments projecting the city's long history across the centuries. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. Landmarks of the modern era, dating back to the establishment of Athens as the capital of the independent Greek state in 1833, include the Hellenic Parliament (19th century) and the Athens Trilogy consisting of the National Library of Greece, the Athens University and the Academy of Athens. Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games in 1896, and 108 years later it welcomed home the 2004 Summer Olympics.[15] Athens is home to the National Archeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities, as well as the new Acropolis Museum.
The city of Athens contains a variety of different architectural styles, ranging from Greco-Roman, Neo-Classical, to modern. They are often to be found in the same areas, as Athens is not marked by a uniformity of architectural style. Many of the most prominent buildings of the city are either Greco-Roman or neo-classical in styling. Some of the neo-classical structures to be found are public buildings erected during the mid-19th century, under the guidance of Theophil Freiherr von Hansen and Ernst Ziller, and include the Athens Academy, Athens City Hall, Greek Parliament, Old Parliament (1875--1932) (Now the National Historical Museum),[50] University of Athens, and Zappeion Hall.
Beginning in the 1930s, the International style and other architectural movements such as Bauhaus and Art Deco began to exert an influence on almost all Greek architects, and many buildings both public and private were constructed in accordance with these styles. Localities with a great number of such buildings include Kolonaki, and some areas of the centre of the city; neighbourhoods developed in this period include Kypseli.
In the 1950s and 1960s during the vast extension and development of Athens, modern architecture played a very important role. The centre of Athens was largely rebuilt, leading to the demolition of a number of neoclassical buildings. The architects of this era employed materials such as glass, marble and aluminium, while some blended modern and classical elements. After World War II, internationally known architects to have designed and built in the city included Walter Gropius, with his design for the US Embassy, and, amongst others, Eero Saarinen, in his postwar design for the east terminal of the Ellinikon Airport.
Notable Greek architects of the 1930s--1960s included Konstantinos Doxiadis, Dimitris Pikionis, Pericles A. Sakellarios, Aris Konstantinidis and others.
Photos and video were taken with a Nikon COOLPIX P100, not the newer Nikon COOLPIX P500. But performance and features should be almost identical.

Day in Athens Part 2 - the Acropolis of Athens
We were on a cruise on the Norwegian Jade out of Rome, to Greece and Turkey.
On Day 4, we were in Athens (Port of Piraeus). Today, we took a private tour.
This is part 2 of the video. I cover the highlight of the visit - the Acropolis! We saw the Acropolis from Mt Lycabetttus earlier that morning and we had bought our combined tickets for the Acropolis (12 Euro adult) from the ticket station outside the Temple of Zeus. All this created great anticipation. Buying the tickets at the Temple of Zeus where there were no lines for tickets also saved us some time. Good suggestion by Dimitris (our driver for the day)!
The Acropolis is an ancient citadel located on a flat-top rock, 150M above sea level, with a surface area of about 3 hecares or 7.5acres. Earlier, we were at Mt Lycabettus, 277M above level, however the top surface area was not very big.
The site contains several ancient buildings of great historical and cultural significance. The most famous was the Parthenon - a former temple dedicated to the godess Athena. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and even western civilisation.
The Elgin Marbels (or Parthenon Marbles, a collection of ancient Greek classical scriptures) were controversially removed by the 7th Earl of Elgin in 1806 and sold to the British Museum in 1816.
