Atlantic City Travel Video
Atlantic City Travel Video - Its not exactly Vegas, but for many a trip to AC conjures Hangover-like scenes of debauchery. And while you might spot bachelors and bachelorettes, gray-haired retirees and vacationing families are at least as accurate as a cross section of typical visitors.
Inside the casinos that never see the light of day, its easy to forget theres a wide white-sand beach just outside and boarded-up shop windows a few blocks in the other direction. The AC, known throughout the late 19th and early 20th century for its grand boardwalk and Oceanside amusement pier and the glamorously corrupt one of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire set in 1920 Prohibition-era AC, has been thoroughly overturned. Since 1977 when the state approved gambling casinos in the hope of revitalizing this fading resort, it has been on a bumpy ride. An ever expanding number of mostly Native American--owned casinos throughout Pennsylvania and New York are challenging ACs gambling hegemony and raison dêtre. A slew of nightclubs and hotel-casinos like the massive Borgata have brought glitz and glamour, the Pier at Caesars, a spiffy shopping mall jutting out into the Atlantic, a steady stream of overseas visitors and an express train service from NYC have kept AC from hemorrhaging too many visitors. If gambling isnt your thing, the boardwalk offers up an all-star roster of summer indulgence, from funnel cakes to go-karts to cheesy gift shops. The small Atlantic City Historical Museum provides a quirky look at ACs past.

Atlantic City is a resort city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, known for its casinos, boardwalk, and beaches. In 2010, it had a population of 39,558. The city was incorporated on May 1, 1854, from portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township. It borders Absecon, Brigantine, Pleasantville, Ventnor City, Egg Harbor Township, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Atlantic City inspired the U.S. version of the board game Monopoly, especially the street names. Since 1921, Atlantic City has been the home of the Miss America pageant. In 1976, New Jersey voters legalized casino gambling in Atlantic City. The first casino opened two years later.
The Atlantic City Boardwalk opened on June 26, 1870, a temporary structure erected for the summer season that was the first boardwalk in the United States.
The Boardwalk starts at Absecon Inlet in the north and runs along the beach south-west to the city limit 4 miles (6.4 km) away then continues 1 1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) into Ventnor City. Casino/hotels front the boardwalk, as well as retail stores, restaurants, and amusements. Notable attractions include the Boardwalk Hall, House of Blues, and the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum.
In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy destroyed the northern part of the boardwalk fronting Absecon Inlet, in the residential section called South Inlet. The oceanfront boardwalk in front of the Atlantic City casinos survived the storm with minimal damage.
The Boardwalk has been home to several piers over the years. The first pier, Ocean Pier, was built in 1882. It eventually fell into disrepair and was demolished. Another famous pier built during that time was Steel Pier, opened in 1898, which once billed itself as The Showplace of the Nation. It now operates as an amusement pier across from the Hard Rock. Captain John Lake Young opened Young's Million Dollar Pier as an arcade hall in 1903, and on the seaward side erected a marble mansion, fronted by a formal garden, with lighting and landscaping designed by Young's longtime friend Thomas Alva Edison. Young's Million Dollar Pier, Atlantic City's largest amusement pier during its time, was transformed into a shopping mall in the 1980s, known as Shops on Ocean One. In 2006, the Ocean One mall was bought, renovated and re-branded as The Pier Shops at Caesars and in 2015, it was renamed Playground Pier. Garden Pier, located opposite Revel Atlantic City, once housed a movie theater, and is now home to the Atlantic City Historical Museum.
Two other piers, an amusement pier named Steeplechase Pier and a Heinz 57-owned pier named Heinz Pier were destroyed in the 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane. Steeplechase was rebuilt after the hurricane, and survived into the casino era. The Steeplechase Pier Heliport on Steel Pier is named in its honor. The last of the four piers still standing is Schiff's Central Pier, which is the only one still offering the same attractions it did when it opened – a few stores, and the playcade, having reopened in 1990 after an $8 million renovation.
Atlantic City has many different shopping districts and malls, many of which are located inside or adjacent to the casino resorts. Several smaller themed retail and dining areas in casino hotels include the Borgata Shops and The Shoppes at Water Club inside the Borgata, the Waterfront Shops inside of Harrah's, Spice Road inside the Trump Taj Mahal, while Resorts Casino Hotel has a small collection of stores and restaurants. Major shopping malls are also located in and around Atlantic City.
In Atlantic City, shops include:
Playground Pier, an underwater-themed indoor high end shopping center located on the Million Dollar Pier formerly known as Shops on Ocean One. The four-story shopping mall contains themed floors.
Tanger Outlets The Walk, an outdoor outlet shopping center spanning several blocks. The only outlet mall in Atlantic County, The Walk opened in 2003 and is undergoing an expansion.
The Quarter at Tropicana, an old Havana-themed indoor shopping center at the Tropicana, which contains over 40 stores, restaurants, and nightclubs.
Boardwalk Hall, formally known as the Historic Atlantic City Convention Hall, is an arena in Atlantic City along the boardwalk. Boardwalk Hall was Atlantic City's primary convention center until the opening of the Atlantic City Convention Center in 1997.

Absecon Lighthouse, Atlantic City - GoHop.ie - Unravel Travel TV
The Absecon Lighthouse is located on the north end of Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA coast overlooking Absecon Inlet. At 171 feet (52 meters) it is the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey and is the third-tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States. Construction began in 1854, with the light first lit on January 15, 1857. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1933 and although the light still shines every night, it is no longer an active navigational aid. The lighthouse is open to public visitation and for a small donation one may climb the 228 steps to the watch room and external gallery. A re-creation of the keepers' quarters was opened in 2002 and serves as a museum and gift shop. The original oil house now contains a Fresnel lens exhibit. It was designed by George Meade and still retains its original first-order fixed Fresnel lens. The lens is made of lead glass and weighs 12,800 pounds (5,800 kg) As the light was fixed (non-flashing), it does not have a landward segment allowing visitors to look up in the lens where the keepers entered it for maintenance. Jack E. Boucher conceived and oversaw the preservation of the lighthouse in 1964. The lighthouse is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places, the Historic American Buildings Survey, and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.

CAPTION: Thirty years after the kick off to legalized gambling in Atlantic City, there is no question that casinos have transformed it into a $5 billion-a-year powerhouse. But problems that money was supposed to address remain. (May 9)

NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST.
((Atlantic City))
((NATS: Ding! Ding! Ding!))
Mary Moyer remembers vividly how legalized casino gambling was sold to the voting public here three decades ago.
((Mary Moyer, Atlantic City Resident))
We thought that it would be the magic bullet that would cure everything and bring Atlantic City back to the glory days.
NATS: gambling sounds
For Moyer, a manager at the Trump Taj Mahal, the casino industry has been a winning bet.
Its really risen out of the ashes.
((Cut to boardwalk outside))
But that's not the case for Merceda Gooding, who lives in a struggling neighborhood two blocks from the Taj Mahal.
Despite a college degree in business, the only casino openings she can find involve cleaning rooms and bussing tables.
((Merceda Gooding, Atlantic City Resident))
It seems like we in a different country, we're surviving and it should not be, all these student loans and stuff I would like to have a job where I can pay the bank back and sustain a regular living - it was a promise for them, for their pockets.
In the 1970s a powerful lobby of investors and desperate politicians re-invented Atlantic City - turning it from a failed summer tourist beach town into a Mecca for gamblers.
((NATS: guy losing at blackjack))
Anti-casino advocates say legalized gambling is short-sighted, NATS: SIREN bringing crimes like prostitution, and luring people to spend money they can't afford, hurting families.
((NATS: then my family will see me here and disown me! Only kidding…))
Others say it is merely entertainment, pointing out how a jackpot of tax revenues is funneled to help seniors and the disabled.
((NATS: Yeah! I got the bonus, the bonus there it is!))
Tony Rodio is the president of Resorts Atlantic City, the first casino to open here.
((Tony Rodio, Resorts Atlantic City))
I was a senior in high school when the referendum passed and I knew I wanted to be part of this industry…
He believes Atlantic City must now re-invent itself, once again, to bet on a more profitable future.
The old Atlantic City was the drive-in, day trip customer.
Intense competition from slot parlors in nearby Pennsylvania and New York helped drive revenue down for the first time ever last year at Atlantic City's 11 casinos.
Rodio says the city is learning to transform itself in the same way Las Vegas did in the 1990s.
Catering to the visitor who stays several days -- gamblers who are also looking for good restaurants, spas, shows, and shopping - with the fashionable, upscale Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa as the model for a new Atlantic City.
Certainly Las Vegas delivers it at a much higher level, but I think Atlantic City is taking steps in that direction.
Going in the opposite direction is a proven failure.
After an intense bidding war, a Kentucky corporation bought the Tropicana last year.
They slashed costs and cut staff, becoming known for dirty hotel rooms and long waits for jackpot payoffs. They lost their casino license, and filed for bankruptcy protection.
The Tropicana is still open, but is now for sale, and state regulators are demanding the buyer run a, quote, first class operation.
