A key component of criminal justice reform is the increased use of diversion and deflection programs. Law enforcement agencies are well placed to effectively institute these programs, since law enforcement is the initial contact for most justice-involved individuals. This panel will define diversion and deflection, as well as give examples of successful programs from across the country. Juvenile justice, mental health and substance abuse will be key focus areas for the panel. Additionally, the panel will discuss how law enforcement led diversion programs can help to build community trust with reform efforts within the criminal justice system.

IAS Thursdays: Roger Launius, Why Go to the Moon? (CC)
What is it about the Moon that captures the fancy of humankind? A silvery disk hanging in the night sky, it conjures up images of romance and magic. It has been counted upon to foreshadow important events, both of good and ill, and its phases for eons served humanity as its most accurate measure of time. This presentation by retired NASA Chief Historian Roger Launius discusses the Moon as a target for Human exploration and eventual settlement. It explores the more than 50-year efforts to reach the Moon, succeeding with space probes and humans in Project Apollo in the 1960s and early 1970s, as well as the space race with the Soviet Union. It will then also discuss the rationales for spaceflight, and ideas for returning to the Moon in the twenty-first century.
This talk is presented as part of the IAS's yearlong 1968-1969 presentation and discussion series, copresented by Northrop and the University Honors Program.

Celebrating the East Building Twentieth-Century Art Series, Part 12: Pop Art
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art. In all of art history, only one movement dared to predict public and commercial success in its very name. The distinction is appropriate, because pop art was all about commerce and consumption from the beginning. Emerging in mid-1950s Great Britain and soon spreading to the United States, pop was a creature of the postwar boom, when television, advertising, fast food, birth rates, home appliances, and suburban sprawl were quickly changing daily life in the developed world. Works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg reflect a new syntax of imagery drawn from popular culture and mass media, devoid of exalted art historical themes and the personal expression that were hallmarks of abstract expressionist painting. As part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art, senior lecturer David Gariff considers the wide variety of objects, themes, and working methods that characterized pop art and the way it blurred distinctions between high art and popular culture. This lecture was presented on August 23, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art.
Mayor Bowser Announces Community Partnerships Mini-Grants, 12/7/15
Mayor Muriel Bowser and senior Administration officials join the Executive Director of the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation (DC Trust) Ed Davies to announce the first round of Community Partnerships Mini-Grants.
The Mini-Grants are part of Mayor Bowser’s Safer, Stronger agenda, and will direct additional resources to underserved neighborhoods in the District. The Mini-Grants will support programming focused on violence prevention and mediation, mentoring, youth enrichment programs, and family support.
Mayor Bowser introduced Safer, Stronger – a comprehensive public safety agenda designed to combat violent crime in the District and make the city safer and stronger – in September. The agenda, a mixture of legislative, budgetary and administrative measures, included the Community Partnerships Mini-Grants Initiative dedicated to funding non-profits that help improve the lives of individuals and families living in areas disproportionately impacted by violent crime.
“The best way to fight crime is to prevent it before it even happens,” said Mayor Bowser. “Through my Safer, Stronger initiative we are providing additional resources to public safety agencies and investing in programs to strengthen communities affected by high crime. This first round of Mini-Grants represents an important step forward – but we can and will do more.”
Twenty-eight Mini-Grants totaling $779,763 were awarded as part of a first round of funding. The programs funded through these grants will serve children and young adults in the Langston/Carver, Lincoln Heights, Benning Terrace, Woodland Terrace and Congress Park neighborhoods. The DC Trust continues to review applications and will award a second round of Mini-Grants next year. For more information about recipients, please visit the DC Trust website:
