NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOTLIST
CAPTION: Officials in Chatham, Massachusetts, say they are relieved that Earl has weakened but are still warning residents and tourists not to tempt fate by venturing too close to the water at the height of the storm Friday night. (Sept. 3)
They are battening down the hatches in Chatham, the quaint Oceanside town on the eastern edge of Cape Cod.
Hurricane Earl pounded North Carolina and Virginia over night and it's projected path has it hitting Cape Cod with heavy winds and rain late friday.
The Chatham institution, the Squire is were many locals plan to ride out the storm.
(SOT)(Richard Sullivan - Manager of The Squire)We're here, we're gonna be open as long as we can. You know depending on how the storm moves - if it's closer to us we may have to close down a little early tonight to get our staff home to our families, but we are just gonna see what happens.
Out at the Chatham Lighthouse, hurricane flags blew as people came out to take a look at the ocean for the last time before the storm hits.
Some tried to take advantage of the last few hours without rain, but most came just for a look.
Bill Carey is from alaska and while he think there might be a little wind he isn't too concerned.
(SOT)(Bill Carey) A little rain and wind doesn't bother those people from Ketchikan, Alaska, But I also lived here in my youth and people get used to these things, we should be able to survive.
On any other labor day weekend this beach would have been filled with kids playing in the water and along the beach.
Today though, the water is off limits and children on the beach are onlookers like everyone else.
(SOT)(Michael Vaughan)(father with kids) I think it is gonna be interesting, we are all real excited about it. we think it is gonna be exciting and interesting.
Tagout

THE NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM - Staten Island , N.Y
Located on the former site of the United States Lighthouse Service’s (USLHS) General Depot in St. George, Staten Island, the National Lighthouse Museum educates visitors about the history and technology of the nation’s lighthouses.
The General Depot was the national headquarters, testing ground, and distribution center for all materials and equipment used by light keepers and USLHS personnel from 1864 to 1939. Once a lively and bustling site of 18 buildings, today only 6 remain.
The Museum is located in the 1912 foundry building. It is 2,400 square feet and is self-guided. Museum exhibits include: Beacons Through Time, Supplying the Nation’s Light Stations: The General Depot, Optics: Projecting the Light, Life at the Light: Lighthouse Keepers, and much more!
In addition to our self-guided exhibits, they offer monthly lectures, group tours by appointment, seasonal Lighthouse Boat Tours (May – October), and annual events like our Lighthouse Weekend (August 3 – 4) and Lighthouse Point Fest (September 29).

Pensacola Lighthouse And Museum, Pensacola, Florida
Early History
First settled by Spaniards in 1559, Pensacola is the oldest European settlement in mainland America. The location - south of the original British colonies and near the dividing line between French Louisiana and Spanish Florida - has caused Pensacola to change ownership several times. Pensacola was Spanish, then French, then Spanish, then British, then Spanish again, before becoming American, then Confederate, and then the current U.S. city.
Early exploration of Pensacola Bay (called Polonza or Ochuse) spanned decades, with the likes of Ponce de León (1513), Pánfilo de Narváez (1528), and Hernando de Soto (1539) charting the area. Due to prior exploration, the first settlement of Pensacola was large, landing on August 15, 1559 and led by Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano with over 1,400 people on 11 ships from Vera Cruz, Mexico. However, weeks later, the colony was decimated by a hurricane on September 19, 1559,which killed hundreds, sank 5 ships, grounded a caravel, and ruined supplies. The 1,000 survivors divided to relocate/resupply the settlement, but due to famine and attacks, the effort was abandoned in 1561. About 240 people sailed to Santa Elena (today's Parris Island, South Carolina), but another storm hit there, so they sailed to Cuba and scattered. The remaining 50 at Pensacola were taken back to Mexico, and the Viceroy's advisors concluded northwest Florida was too dangerous to settle, for 135 years.
Spanish Influence
The banners of five nations, Spain, France, England, the Confederate States of America, and the United States, have flown over the city of Pensacola, giving rise to its nickname, The City of Five Flags. Pensacola is Florida’s second oldest city, and has the deepest bay on the Gulf Coast. The mouth of the bay is bounded by Santa Rosa Island to the east and Perdido Key to the west. To guard the entrance, Spain established Fort Barrancas atop a 60-foot bluff on the mainland opposite the bay’s mouth. Soon after the United States took control of Florida from Spain in 1821, the federal government, recognizing the importance of Pensacola’s harbor, moved to establish both a naval yard and lighthouse there.

St. Marys Blessing of the fleet @ St. Clement's Island (1996)
In October 1996, I traveled to Saint Mary's County to see the Blessing of The Fleet, to visit St. Clement's Island. Upon arriving, State Delegate Johnny Wood, and Maryland's Speaker of the House of Delegates, Casper Taylor, were there and I spoke to them at the beginning of this video. Speaker Taylor later gave a speech and part of it is in this video. At the time, there was speculation that he might run for Governor of Maryland in 1998. Parris Glendening would end up winning the Democrat nomination and MD. House minority leader Ellen Sauerbrey would head the Republican ticket in 1998. In this video, certain short parts containing copyrighted music have been silenced to avoid copyright issues. Thank you to the ladies in the museum, and Mr. John Quade, who also appeared in this video. The river shown in this video is the Potomac River, Maryland on this side, Virginia on the other side.
