Ice shuts down Augusta Ferry
BRACKEN COUNTY (Rich Jaffe) -- It doesn't happen very often, but the Augusta Ferry shut down on Tuesday largely because of the tremendous amount of ice in the river.The Augusta Ferry is one of ten working ferry's in the state of Kentucky but on Tuesday the ferry business in Augusta was at a standstill.Held captive by huge chunks of ice floating down the Ohio River, the ferry generally runs seven days a week, carrying passengers, cars and trucks over and back from the Ohio side.However, when there's this much ice coming down the river, Captain Joe Gallenstein said that The whole ball game changes, you have to dodge the ice if you can, try to push through it, try to use good judgment to close down when you can't run in to it you know but it's difficult, try to do the best we can for the customers but sometimes you can't you know.Gallenstein's been working on the river for 27 years, and he knows enough to take some dock time to work on a troublesome throttle issue inside the much warmer wheelhouse explaining that Yesterday the ice was so thick, couldn't get back into the landing, we had to wash it in and keep shoving back and forth, it was continuously coming back around us the whole time.To get a sense of how much ice is coming down the river, all you have to do is listen to it.Huge plates of the ice skidded into one another shattering and fracturing, snapping and popping making so much noise it just about drowned out all of nature's other sounds.On Tuesday morning, the ferry made one brief attempt at a crossing.Deckhand Bill Nickerson says It was pushin so big a pieces and stuff it couldn't go under it so it just stopped us. Just kept us from moving.5 years ago Devin Claypool started as a deck hand on the Jerry Ann, now he's a captainDidn't really know it til I started but my great grandpa used to run the boat and I started down here and the water gets in your blood, said Claypool. Riding The Jenny Ann ferry across the Ohio River in Augusta, KY
Many people will probably not enjoy this video as it is boring, but I'm uploading it to keep my hard drive from getting too crowded. Some people watching this may not know there is a ferry in Augusta (about 20 miles NW of Maysville, KY), so maybe more people will get to enjoy a relaxing ride across the Ohio River. I think it costs $5 per car, so it's not expensive but it is only one-way. To get back to KY you will have to drive east to Aberdeen, OH and cross the William H. Harsha Bridge. This was my kids' first time on a ferry, and my wife's first time on this particular one. The last half of the river crossing was when one of the crew members came up and started talking to us so we stopped recording.

Baker-Bird Winery ~ Augusta, Kentucky
In 1797, the first commercial vineyard in the United States was planted in the Kentucky Bluegrass Region. Many German immigrants flocked to the Cincinnati area on the Ohio River. German immigrants like Robert Ruf, Henry Stahl, Mathias Darfinger, as well as Joseph Conrad, Joseph, Michael and George Schweitzer left Baden Germany, traveling through Antwerp, and arriving in the Augusta, Kentucky area by the mid 1800s. Since the Ohio River around Cincinnati reminded the german settler's of their Homeland, these new settlers dubbed the area, America's Rhineland(R). The German immigrants helped construct impressive wine cellars and premium wine was produced in Augusta, Kentucky by 1856. The Kentucky Bluegrass produced some of the finest wines in the United States in the mid 1800s.
The historic Abraham Baker wine cellar is restored and newly named in the German tradition, Baker-Bird Winery. That is, the name is based on Baker, who built the winery and Bird, who currently owns the winery. The Baker-Bird brand denotes high quality wines. Since opening our gates in 2010, you are able to visit the winery, which is on the United States National Historic Registry, the Civil War Heritage Trail, and the Freedom Trail. The historic vineyards and winery restoration allows you to savor the tradition of fine wines and Tasting History(R).
