Fairbanks, Alaska’s Northern Lights
Northern Lights photographer Frank Stelges shares his passion for capturing the aurora in Fairbanks, Alaska by teaching visitors about the beauty of the phenomenon. It's something that hits us on a deeper level; it opens people up — they become emotional, and they talk about their lives. It's a great thing when people start feeling like they can share these things. Frank describes the beauty of the nights sky in Alaska and the connect he makes with visitors to his part of the country.

This video was taken by the crew of Expedition 30 on board the International Space Station. The sequence of shots was taken February 8, 2012 from 10:32:23 to 10:36:25 GMT, on a pass from the North Pacific Ocean, south of Alaska, to the northwest corner of the United States. This video displays the Aurora Borealis over Canada and the North Pole, and shows the dynamic motions of the aurora near the beginning of the video. The pass begins looking north towards Alaska, where Anchorage can be seen faintly through the clouds and snow. The pass continues down the coastline towards the northwestern United States, where we can see the Coast Mountains and the Rocky Mountains.
Best Northern Lights Viewing in Alaska
Guided Northern Lights Viewing Tour into the heart of the Brooks Range north of the Arctic Circle, one of the best places in Alaska (and in North America!) where you can see the aurora most often and with greatest intensity. This tour is happening during one of the best months for seeing the Northern Lights in Alaska, when there are generally frequent displays and clear skies.

Aurora Borealis and North America at Night
This video compacts about 18-and-a-half minutes of ISS travel into about 30 seconds.
What I particularly enjoy about this video is that it starts looking directly to the area of the planet I occupy. Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is easily distinguishable, especially due to the city lights of Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, and Seward. South of that you can see Kodiak Island. Immediately north of the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage is brightly lit; Fairbanks can be seen even further to the north. The video travels east across the United States, as you find yourself struggling to decide on whether you should watch the aurora borealis (northern lights) to the north, or try to guess all of the cities you can see due to the concentrated man-made light. Clouds obscure much of the view between Alaska and the Rockies, but they break in time to offer great Canadian views of Calgary and Edmonton.
Following that, Minneapolis/St.Paul stand out, just before Chicago takes center-stage at around 24 seconds in, brilliantly lit, just south of Lake Michigan. You can catch the flashes of a lightning storm as we continue east towards the East Coast of the United States. You might notice how populated and electrified the East Coast is, compared to the Mid-West and the central United States. The video ends just after our view heads east over the coast of Florida, and above the shallow waters of the Bahamas.

What I Did On My Christmas Vacation
Chasing the northern lights is not for the faint of heart.
Tamara Laine headed to Alaska to see the natural phenomenon firsthand. The best time to see them is during the dead of winter when temperatures dip below freezing.
So, what makes Mother Nature's light show so magical? The aurora borealis, or the northern lights, is the Earth's magnetic field interacting with charged particles from the sun. When they start forming, it looks like clouds. Shortly after, they light up into an array of colors.
In Fairbanks they're known to come out between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., but they are elusive and no one knows when they'll actually appear. Though the sun shines for only four hours during the winter months, there are plenty of things to do.
Just Short of Magic is a dog mushing school that teaches everything you need to know before hitting the trails. If you need to warm up after outdoor adventures, Chena Hot Springs allows travelers the chance to dip into 103-degree natural hot springs.

Aurora Borealis February 18, 2014 Fairbanks, Alaska
Jan DeNapoli is a neurosurgery PA for Alaska Neuroscience Associates. She has been doing photography as a hobby for over 35 years. She took these photos on Chena Hot Springs Road outside of Fairbanks from two places, first in her yard (mile 17) and then a few miles out to the Two Rivers Community Center (mile 23). There are over 500 photos in this timelapse video. DeNapoli has lived in Alaska for over 20 years. She is also a dog musher who does dogsled tours in winter (check out muzzysplace.net for more info), fishing and sightseeing/photography charters in Valdez with our boat in summer (gdaycharters.com).

Night of the Northern Lights
On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north.
Here is a link to the music used, as many of you asked about it

Unusual building right next to the spa one caught my eye. It was called Ice Museum. The museum was full of all kinds of ice sculptures deuleocha. Medieval knight in the battle scenes were carved in actual size and the fight was a vivid look as though going in front. This place was a place like ice sculpture exhibition hall rather than a museum. Ice House was a visit to see the inside. Living room Christmas tree in brilliant colors yen made of ice was located. At first glance, it looks warm, comfy bed right next to the ice is. I did not forget you make a bathroom. The strategy was interested in the fireplace is installed. And this piece was carefully decorated with realistic representations remind the fireplace, one red light is set to turn into ice on fire firewood log. Of course, Lee was not warm. Cold vodka in an ice palace oneself another memorable. What kind of taste in the ice glass drink alcohol? A man drinking a bureowotda.
