The Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky celebrated Navy Day on Sunday. A naval parade opened the celebrations in Avachinsky bay. During the parade the crews demonstrated actions aimed at detaining so-called ship-intruders.

1. Kamchatka Krai is a federal subject (a krai) of Russia. It is geographically located in the Far East region of the country. The largest active volcano in the northern hemisphere and brown bear scooping up salmon – you can see both in Russia’s barely touched Kamchatka Peninsula. Without a doubt, this sub-Arctic, 1250km-long finger of land in the Russian Far East is one of the top places on Earth for pristine habitats and abundant wildlife, despite being covered in snow and ice most of the year.
2. Kamchatka, like much of Arctic Siberia and North America, was originally sparsely inhabited by native tribes. In the 16th century, spurred by tales of a land of fire that was rich in fish and furs, Kamchatka was claimed by Muscovite Russia. Two settlements were built by Cossacks in 1697 as fur trading posts.
3. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the largest city and capital of Kamchatka Krai, and home to over half of the krai's population.
4. The Pacific Plate is subducted beneath the Okhotsk plate just miles off Kamchatka's coast, and the peninsula is extremely geologically active. Two of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded shook the peninsula in 1737 and in 1952 at 9.3 and 9.0 magnitude respectively. The latter caused a tsunami which ravaged Hawaii and even reached as far as New Zealand and Chile. In addition to these two mega-quakes, powerful earthquakes occur quite often. A 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurs roughly every 3–5 years with a 7.0 quake occurring roughly every 10–15 years.
5. Kamchatka Krai is an active volcanic zone which is home to Kluchevskaya, the largest volcano in Eurasia, and the Decade Volcanoes of Avachinsky and Koryaksky.
6. Kamchatka is the real “bear state” of the Russian Federation. According to various estimates, there are between 15,000 and 30,000 bears here. Such a high concentration of bears cannot be found anywhere else not only in Russia, but in the whole world.
7. The Valley of Geysers is a geyser field on Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, and has the second largest concentration of geysers in the world. This six-kilometre-long basin with approximately 90 geysers and many hot springs is situated on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Temperatures have been found to be 250 °C, 500 m below the caldera ground. It is part of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, which, in turn, is incorporated into the World Heritage Site Volcanoes of Kamchatka. The valley is difficult to reach, with helicopters providing the only feasible means of transport.

L'Avachinsky est situé en Russie, dans la péninsule du Kamtchatka, entouré par l'océan Pacifique au sud-est, par le volcan Koryaksky au nord-ouest et par la ville de Petropavlovsk-Kamtchatski au sud-ouest.
L'Avachinsky culmine à 2 741 mètres d'altitude et a la forme d'un cône aux pentes régulière inscrit dans une caldeira en forme de fer à cheval. Il est flanqué au sud-est par le Kozelsky, une bouche éruptive latérale composée d'un cratère ouvert vers le nord-est.
La montagne est un stratovolcan faisant partie de la ceinture de feu du Pacifique et aux éruptions explosives ce qui le range dans la catégorie des volcans gris. Ses éruptions produisent des dômes de lave, des panaches volcaniques, des nuées ardentes, de petites coulées de lave et des lahars qui sont canalisés vers le sud-ouest par les rebords de la caldeira.

Kamchatka - Avachinsky Climb
The first climb of our Kamchatka trip in August 2016; Avachinsky Volcano (2750m). After our arrival in Petropavlosky, the next day we got straight into this initial warm up climb of Avachinsky, a beautiful, active and recently erupting volcano just outside of the main city of Petropavlosky. The last eruption of this stratovolcano was 2008. The climb required a bumpy 1.5hr ride up a washed out river bed in a Kamaz 6x6 driven by the effervescent Sergei and then a fairly stiff 1850m ascent. A leisurely, non-technical walk up climb of 10 hours got us up and down. We were to get used to these bumpy 6x6 rides by the end of the trip spending about 10 hours in such vehicles over the next two weeks.

The Kamchatka peninsula in far eastern Russia is one of the world's great wildernesses and consequently an often highly inhospitable region in which to live. During the Soviet era life there was heavily subsidised because of the region's importance as a fishing zone and military area. But post-communism, Kamchatka has largely had to fend for itself, which has led to shortages of food, medicines, fuel and money. Some people are starving, some are driven to despair and the Red Cross has launched an international appeal. But even the Red Cross can do little about two more of Kamchatka's problems - volcanoes and earthquakes.
