Seven Beauties - Waltz | Gara Garayev
Gara Abulfaz oghlu Garayev (February 5, 1918, Baku -- May 13, 1982, Moscow), also spelled as Qara Qarayev or Kara [Abulfazovich] Karayev, was a prominent Azerbaijani composer of the Soviet period. Garayev wrote nearly 110 musical pieces, including ballets, operas, symphonic and chamber pieces, solos for piano, cantatas, songs and marches, and rose to prominence not only in Azerbaijan SSR but also in the rest of the Soviet Union and worldwide.
Due to his musical talents, in 1933 Garayev was allowed to enroll simultaneously in two faculties at the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire. Among his teachers were Georgi Sharoyev, Leonid Rudolf, and the prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. In 1937, Garayev joined the Union of Composers of Azerbaijan SSR.
In 1938, at the age of twenty, Garayev composed his first musical piece, a cantata The Song of the Heart to the poem by Rasul Rza. It was performed in Moscow's Bolshoi Theater in attendance of Joseph Stalin in the same year. Garayev conducted his cantata during the Decade of Azerbaijani Art festival in the Bolshoi Theater, an event also attended by Stalin. In the same year, Garayev moved to Moscow State Conservatoire, where he became a student and a good friend of Dmitri Shostakovich.
In 1941 Garayev returned to Baku to teach at Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Society. In 1945, Garayev and Jovdat Hajiyev wrote the Motherland (Vətən) opera, for which they were awarded a prestigious Stalin Prize. In 1948, at the age of 30, Garayev was again awarded this prize for his symphonic poem Leyli and Majnun, based on the same-titled famous work of Nizami Ganjavi. Upon the death of Uzeyir Hajibeyov in 1948, Garayev became the Chair of the Union of Composers of Azerbaijan SSR and the rector of Azerbaijan State Conservatoire. In the latter position, Garayev retained Uzeyir Hajibeyov's traditional emphasis on Azerbaijani folk music in teaching, and also promoted the contemporary genres, such as jazz, in Azerbaijani music. In 1948 Garayev also became the delegate to the First National USSR Congress of Soviet Composers. In the same year Garayev also headed the Music Department at the Azerbaijan Architecture and Art Institute.
In 1952, under the direction of the choreograph P. A. Gusev, Garayev's Seven Beauties ballet was staged at the Azerbaijani Theater of Opera and Ballet. Based on Nizami Ganjavi's famous poem, Seven Beauties (Yeddi gözəl) became the first Azerbaijani ballet and opened a new chapter in the history of classical music of Azerbaijan. Garayev's only other ballet, Path of Thunder (İldırımlı yollarla), staged in 1958, was dedicated to racial conflicts in South Africa.[3] In the same year, Garayev also wrote the score for the documentary film A Story About the Oil Workers of the Caspian Sea, directed by Roman Karmen and set at the Oil Rocks.
During his teaching career at the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire, Garayev tutored a number of prominent Azerbaijani musicians and composers, including Niyazi, Arif Malikov, Khayyam Mirzazade and Ismayil Hajibeyov among others. Garayev's own son, Faraj (born 1943) was also his student, who went on to compose single-act ballets such as Shadows of Qobustan (Qobustanın kölgələri) and Kaleidoscope, and later led the musical avantgarde movement in Azerbaijan.
In June 1961, amidst the Cold War, Garayev and Tikhon Khrennikov were the only two Soviet composers who attended the first International Los Angeles Music Festival held at UCLA. Fifteen composers from seven nations presented their works, including Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky. On June 11, Franz Waxman conducted the Festival Symphony Orchestra with a suite from Garayev's Path of Thunder.
In 1962 Garayev became a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and visited the United States, Ethiopia and Lebanon. In 1972 he visited Poland.
Garayev suffered from heart disease, which prevented him from attending his own 60th jubilee celebration held in Baku, where he was awarded the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor.

Libretto
One of the most brilliant corners of Azerbaijan. A morning opens to the strains of a flute of a young shepherd. Koroglu is one of the first woke up with a shepherd, in a dewy pasture atmosphere decorated with greenery and who is not indifferent to all this. He drinks water from the delightful river of the Motherland and enjoys a new day.
After some time, young girls come to a riverside, Koroghlu who sees that, removes a shepherd who wants to watch them with interest from this place. Girls with water jugs approach the creek, and having filled them they supplement a scenery with beautiful dances. Persistent shepherd who wants to watch the ladies appears again. Also young boys appear who make him remark that it is shameless to spy on, and make him change his mind for a while. The shepherd starts an amusing cross-talk with those who condemn him. National celebration begins and everybody shows his skills.
Suddenly during the celebration Koroglu received bad news, and a wise leader directs intelligence men to conventional enemies to realize the current situation which people might be confronted with. (in those ancient times there were occasional battles between the Turkic tribes, common in everything but differ in a way of thinking).
After a long observation, the intelligence men report to their leader that war is inevitable. Koroglu is a brave man who loves his country, loves his people, supports him in all matters, always on the side of the oppressed against the oppressors, a supporter of peace, but he can make swords speaking where the words are finished.
He calls the army to battle and start preparatory actions. Soon both sides meet in a battle-field and the battle begins.
Brave people, one and all distinguished by courage, do not want to lose, an exciting battle scene comes to life, and the shepherd, who first turned out to be in a ridiculous position, became a serious warrior. In the toughest moment of the battle, Koroglu realized that both sides made a big mistake and the sons of one nation should not fight and stop the battle. He reconciles the Commanders-in-Chief of both armies. Despite the protesters, he prevents the battle, all weapons are removed by consent, peace and prosperity comes. Folk festivities continue under the guidance of Koroglu and all people perform Yalla dance.

Rübabə Muradova - Ay günahsız əzizim
Rubaba Khalil qizi Muradova born Rubaba Ishragi 21 March 1930, was an Azerbaijani opera (mezzo-soprano) and folk singer. She graduated from the Zeynalli College of Music in Baku and worked at the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre, where she started in 1954. In 1971, Rubaba Muradova became the People's Artist of Azerbaijan.
Rubaba Muradova was born to a family of a cleric in the Iranian city of Ardabil. In 1943, she moved to then Soviet Azerbaijan, and settled in the city of Ali Bayramli. Since age 17, she acted in various roles at the local theaters.
In 1953, she graduated from the Zeynalli College of Music in Baku, where she was taught by prominent khananda Seyid Shushinski. She started working at the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre in 1954.
Her most famous role was that of Leyli in Uzeyir Hajibeyov's Leyli and Majnun (1908). Muradova's lyric improvisations are remembered for their emotional qualities that would often bring people in the audience to tears. Her colleagues explained this such emotional singing by the difficulties Muradova experienced in her personal life, particularly her being homesick for Ardabil and not being able to visit it because of the closed Soviet-Iranian border.
