How NOT to Get to Ba Be Lake, Vietnam - MMTV #20 (Ba Be National Park, Vietnam - Part 1 of 2)
In episode 20 of the Monday Morning Travel Vlog, It Ain't Easy, we visit Ba Be National Park (aka Ba Be Lake) and show you that travel is not always easy.
The way we got to Ba Be Lake is NOT the way I would recommend getting to Ba Be National Park. But it should still give you a good idea what the journey looks like, and we had some entertaining moments along the way.

Ba Be National Park
Ba Be National Park, Ba Be Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam with exceptional biodiversity including a population of langurs, over 200 bird and 350 butterfly species, geological treasures and mature primary limestone forests. In places like this, careless tourism can bring human disturbances and endanger this heritage, while thoughtful tourism with a controlled impact can provide excellent support to conservation projects in the area and help the economies of local people. We share your desire for the latter option and promise that nature knows how to return your kindness. Surrounded by the lush green of the forest, we hope you enjoy your time spent exploring the lakes, caves, mountains and jungles.
Ba Be Lake, Ba Be National Park | Vietnam Typical Tours
Ba Be Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Ba Bể, Ba Bể meaning Three Lakes in the local Tay language). The name Three Lakes refers to the three parts of the lake named Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam. All these three parts are connected into a single continuous body of water, however.
Ba Be Lake is the largest natural fresh water lake, stretching about 8 kilometers in the north-south direction. The surface area of the lake fluctuates between 3 and 5 km² between dry and wet season. Unlike many lakes in Karst limestone areas, Ba Bê Lake never falls dry. Its average depth varies between 17 and 23 meters, the maximum depth is 35 meters.
Vietnam Typical Tours has large variety of Tours in Ba Be National Park to offer you.

Ba Be National Park Vietnam | How to reach Ba Be | Where to stay in Ba Be | Life on Wheel
Well, this is not a heavily tourist spot. But that's what makes it more appealing to us. Ba Be national park gave us so many unexpected experiences that we would cherish forever.
The first thing would definitely be the boat taxi; yes to get to and from our homestay we had to use boat. Second would be for sure the amazing family we stayed with. They were so helpful and almost saved my life. I left my hard disk with all vietnam shoots in their homestay. The brother in that house literally came down 45 km to hand that over to us.
Third, 5:30pm is the time by when you should return from lake and we were so late as we naturally take time at every spot it was all dark when reached the shore, it was 7pm. The uncle didn't say a thing and we absolutely enjoyed and felt like the whole lake belonged to us.
And there were so much more, trying to talk to locals in English, the unplanned silk waterfall visit, the lush green paddy fields... we loved them all.
We visited Ba Be Lake, Puong Cave, Dau Dang Waterfall, Hua ma cave, Silk Waterfall.

Biggest disappointment | BA BE NP, VIETNAM
Ba Be National Park, 4 September 2016
Biggest disappointment
Day 19
Woke up early in the morning to be on a boat trip to see some spots in the Ba Be National Park. It wasn't a pleasant trip because everything wasn't like I had expected. It is a popular tourist attraction but has got ruined by irresponsibilty and full of trash.
We got back before noon and drove all the way back to Hanoi.

How to get to Ba Be National Park
Tourist review I found this shuttle bus which is a great way to get up to Ba Be National Park (so much nicer than Sapa) especially for independent travellers. Previously you either had to take local buses which although cheap were very hit and miss and you never quite knew if you were going to end up where you wanted, or, you had to pay out for a private car, which is just not viable unless there are 3-4 of you.
This bus ( and being bright yellow, you can certainly see it coming) is a great compromise. Only for tourists, (and free for local students - a nice touch) it travels direct from the Old Quarter in Hanoi, straight up the much improved highway to the north, there is 15 minute comfort break and then on to the more quiet twisty roads to the mountains. The seats are comfy and reclining with seat belts. The driver was very safe. For $15 I think it was good value.
We got to Ba Be in time for lunch (a five hour trip) so were free to explore activities for the rest of the day.
I think this is another project by Mr Linh who has a Homestay in Ba Be.
