BRATs: Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum
The participants of our latest BRATs young journalist camp in Malacca visited the museum on the historic Heeren Street to learn more about Peranakan Chinese culture. This here's the video they made after the visit.
We got a tour from the museum's lead tour guide, Christina Ong,and also interviewed its curator, Melissa Chan, whose great-great-grandfather bought the house which has now been repurposed into the museum.

Home of a Peranakan Family since 1861
The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is located in Melaka, a World UNESCO Site. The house is a combination of three terrace lots that were acquired by the Chan family in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it was opened as a museum in March 1985.
Today the museum is still managed by the family with a vision of reviving the Malaysia’s Peranakan identity and heritage. By preserving this house for visitors and students the museum hope to honour the Peranakan spirit, keeping it alive for many generations to come!

Cina Benteng by Udaya Halim organised by Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum Melaka
“Cina Benteng” a term that refers to the Chinese of Tangerang (in Indonesia), with the word “Cina” means Chinese, while “Benteng a word for fort.
Hence “Cina Benteng” literally means “Chinese from the fort”. This was due to the fact that the East India Company erected a fort on Ci Sadane River in order to avoid invasion. Thus, the Chinese community that lived around the fort were then known as “Cina Benteng”.
We are most fortunate to have the founder of Benteng Heritage Museum, Udaya Halim that came all the way from Tangerang to Malacca, to share with us on the beauty and uniqueness of “Cina Benteng”
