Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany with a population of about 230,000 people. In the south-west of the country, it straddles the Dreisam river, at the foot of the Schlossberg.
The city is known for its medieval university and minster, as well as for its high standard of living and advanced environmental practices. According to meteorological statistics, the city is the sunniest and warmest in Germany and holds the German temperature record of 40.2 °C. Although embedded in a large stretch of green surroundings, Freiburg is in the center of the Blue Banana.

Wer ins Bächle dappt wird verheiratet
Badische Gelassenheit, viel Sonne und noch mehr Radfahrer, dazu studentisches Flair, das berühmte Münster und die Bächle - Freiburg, eine Stadt zum Verlieben … oder auch zum Verheiratet werden.
Freiburg ist eine der nachhaltigsten Städte Deutschlands. Die sogenannte Green City befindet sich gleich neben der Altstadt, unter anderem mit einer kompletten Solarsiedlung. Passend zum Motto ist natürlich das Fahrrad beliebtestes Fortbewegungsmittel. Seit 2014 wird sogar an einer umfassenden Radvorrangroute gebaut. Zwei der geplanten 13 Teilabschnitte sind auf 14 Kilometer Länge bereits fertig gestellt. Hier haben Radfahrer immer Vorfahrt, als Fußgänger lieber zweimal umsehen.
Altehrwürdiges Freiburg
Gemütlich ist es hier. Das sagen Einwohner, Besucher und die fast 35.000 Studenten - die sorgen vor allem für reges Leben auf Plätzen, in Parks und natürlich den Kneipen der Altstadt. Wahrzeichen der entspannten Metropole im Breisgau ist das Münster Unserer Lieben Frau. Eigentlich durch den Stand des Bischofssitzes sogar eine Kathedrale, aus traditionellen Beweggründen bleibt es aber einfach das Münster. Es wurde in gut 800 Jahren nie zerstört und somit erfreuen sich auch heute noch alle an ursprünglicher Architektur und Bausubstanz. Zweites Wahrzeichen sind die Bächle am Rand (seltener in der Mitte) der Kopfsteinpflaster-Straßen und Gassen.
Bächle-Wunder
Die Miniatur-Kanäle gibt‘s schon seit dem Mittelalter, dienten einst der zusätzlichen Frischwasserversorgung und werden mit dem Wasser des Flüsschens Dreisam gespeist. Insgesamt über 15 Kilometer der kleinen Wasserläufe durchziehen Freiburg. Im Laufe der Zeit sorgten sie immer wieder für Schlagzeilen und lustige Geschichten: Helmut Kohls Frau ist schon mit dem Auto rein gefahren und stecken geblieben, Touristen holen sich mangels vorrausschauendem Gehens öfters nasse Füße und es hat sich eine weltweit einzigartige Tierart entwickelt, das Freiburger-Bächle-Egel. Das ist sogar per DNA-Sequenzanalyse bewiesen. Achtung: Wer in Freiburg in ein Bächle dappt, der muss eine Freiburgerin bzw. einen Freiburger heiraten. Das ist ungeschriebenes Gesetz.

Freiburg im Breisgau, or more commonly Freiburg is known as the Jewel of the Black Forest. By German standards it is a major city in southwest Germany, situated on the edge of the Black Forest. When ordering train tickets and similar items online, be careful not to confuse Freiburg (im Breisgau) with Freiburg (an der Elbe) or Fribourg in Switzerland.
Münster cathedral is Freiburg's biggest sight in the city, one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Europe. The gargoyles are not to be missed; be sure to study every corner of the Münster. Make the effort to climb the stairs to the top of the tower for the fabulous views (Entry €1.50). Every day in the morning until 13:00 Mon-Fri and 13:30 Saturday, there is a market on the square surrounding the church. Visit on Saturday morning, as it then will be the biggest and nicest. Vendors are pleasant and sell local produce and goods. Recommended fare is a Bratwurst mit Brötchen (Bratwurst in a bun) or Currywurst for around €2.20. They're inexpensive, authentic, and make a delicious lunch or snack.
Bächle are small canals that line the streets of the inner city. These canals were once meant as a way to fight fires in medieval Freiburg. The locals say that if you accidentally fall or step into one, you will marry a Freiburg resident.

Martinstor. The other old city gate, which is well known locally for the McDonald's next door which has placed its logo on the gate.

Augustinermuseum The new Augustiner Museum houses a renowned art collection with works ranging from the Middle Ages up to the Baroque period, as well as paintings from the 19th century.

Seepark. A man-made lake and a popular escape from the urban housing estate of Betzenhausen. Complete with beer garden and a restaurant, Seepark is popular with families and those planning a walk around the stunning green-belt area.

We aren't having much luck with the weather today. It is really rainy here in Freiburg. It is Easter weekend but we are out an exploring and we want to show you the city. Let's go have a tour.
One of my first impressions of Freiburg is that it is such a great city to walk around in. That's all we've been doing so far. It's very picturesque. There are cobbled streets and it is also very historic.

Thankfully, the weather has shifted dramatically for the better. Earlier we had been rained out, so we had to head back into the hotel because it was cold and windy. Now we're seeing a few patches of blue skies, so we're going to keep exploring around Freiburg.

The Freiburg Bächle are small water-filled runnels or formalised rills in the Black Forest city of Freiburg. They are supplied with water by the Dreisam and can be seen along most streets and alleyways in the old city, being one of the city's most famous landmarks. The word Bächle comes from the German Bach, meaning stream, with the Alemannic diminutive ending -le.
Sit back and relax, toes in the water! It is not just children who love to splash around in the shallow, babbling clear waters of the Freiburg Bächle, many an adult succumbs to the charms of these urban rivers in miniature. Fed by the Dreisam River, the water runnels flow through countless narrow streets in Freiburg’s Old Town.
Water makes a city livable and lively, in the past and also today. As early as the 12th century, when the city was founded, the flat paved gutters supplied Freiburg with water for drinking, fighting fires and other uses.
Today, the Freiburg Bächle serve as the course for the quirky Bächle Boat Race, a backdrop for gory crime novels and a treacherous trap for singles. According to local legend, any single person who accidentally stumbles into a Bächle has to marry a Freiburger.

Freiburg im Breisgau is situated in the heart of a major wine-growing region. Because of its scenic beauty, relatively warm and sunny climate, and easy access to the scenic beauty of the Black Forest, Freiburg is a hub for regional tourism.
At the centre of the old city is the Münsterplatz or Cathedral Square, Freiburg's largest square. A farmers market is held here every day except Sundays. This is the site of Freiburg's Münster, a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530 and noted for its towering spire.
The city has an unusual system of gutters (called Freiburg Bächle) that run throughout its centre. These Bächle, once used to provide water to fight fires and feed livestock, are constantly flowing with water diverted from the Dreisam. During the summer, the running water provides natural cooling of the air.
Freiburg is known as an eco-city because of its advanced environmental practices. The citizens of Freiburg are known in Germany for their love of cycling and recycling. The city has an extensive pedestrian zone in the city center where no automobiles are allowed.
Freiburg is a center of academia and research with numerous intellectual figures and Nobel Laureates having lived, worked, and taught there. The city houses one of the oldest and most renowned of German universities, the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, as well as its medical center.

The Schlossberg is a tree-covered hill of 456 metres (1,496 ft). It is directly to the east of Freiburg's Old Town and belongs to the Black Forest. The tower located on the hill (Schlossbergturm) offers a unique panoramic view over the whole town and its vicinity. It was built in 2002.

Fribourg-en-Brisgau (en allemand : Freiburg im Breisgau ; en dialecte badois : Friburg im Brisgau) est une ville d'Allemagne située dans le land de Bade-Wurtemberg. C'est le chef-lieu de l'arrondissement de Brisgau-Haute-Forêt-Noire, dont elle ne fait pas partie. Elle est aussi le chef-lieu du district de Fribourg-en-Brisgau et de l'association régionale Südlicher Oberrhein. De 1945 à 1952, elle fut la capitale du land de Bade, qui a alors fusionné avec deux autres länder pour former le bade-Wurtemberg.
Fribourg, en allemand Freiburg ou Freyburg, est un toponyme formé sur les radicaux germaniques frei « libre » (dans le sens de « franche», libre de certaines charges seigneuriales) et Burg « château, ville fortifiée ».
Fribourg est l'une des villes allemandes les plus méridionales. Elle est traversée par le Dreisam et se trouve au pied des montagnes de la Forêt-Noire. Le centre-ville est à une vingtaine de kilomètres du Rhin et de la France, et à environ 70 km de la Suisse. Fribourg compte environ 230 000 habitants, ce qui en fait la quatrième plus grande ville du Bade-Wurtemberg après Stuttgart, Mannheim et Karlsruhe.
On peut y admirer un imposant palais archi-épiscopal. La vieille-ville de Fribourg est célèbre pour sa cathédrale (ou münster) qui posséderait, d'après un historien allemand, le plus beau clocher de la chrétienté et ses « bächle », (diminutif de bach : ruisseau, bächle : ruissselet) des petits caniveaux ouverts qui bordent les trottoirs. Elle accueille plus de trois millions de visiteurs par an. Fribourg est aussi le siège d'une université fondée en 1457.
C'est une ville pionnière en matière d'écologie, avec notamment l'éco-quartier Vauban aménagé à partir de 1996. Elle organise un marché de Noël très fréquenté, en particulier sur la place de la mairie (rathaus).

Hier sieht man ein Freiburger Bächle. Diese Bächle laufen durch die ganze Stadt und dienten der städtischen Wasserversorgung, sowie dem Bewässern von Ländereien. Auch beim Feuerlöschen sind sie eine große Hilfe. Obwohl es ab und zu einige Fehltritte ins Bächle gibt, sind die Bächle bis heute schön anzusehen und machen Freiburg zu einer einzigartigen Stadt.
