The following is from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website:
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge was established on June 6, 1938 as a 4,589-acre refuge to provide feeding and resting habitat for migratory birds. It is a critical segment in the Atlantic Flyway. As the metropolitan area of Virginia Beach began to grow in the 1980's, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pursued a land acquisition program to double the size of Back Bay NWR in order to protect the watershed from harmful development. Since 1988 the Refuge has grown to over 9,250 acres, protecting critical habitat for wildlife, which years ago had been zoned for residential and commercial use. The Friends of Back Bay was instrumental in gaining approval for the expansion and obtaining $24 million of funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to purchase land from willing sellers within the acquisition boundary. The expansion provided a buffer against development, thus reducing erosion and runoff of fertilizers and chemicals that pollute Back Bay. As a result water quality has improved, there has been a marked increase in the amount of submerged aquatic vegetation and the numbers of ducks, geese and other waterbirds have increased.
Back Bay NWR includes a thin strip of barrier island coastline typical of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, as well as upland areas on the west bank of Back Bay. Habitats include beach, dunes, woodlands, agricultural fields, and emergent freshwater marshes. The majority of refuge marshes are on islands within the waters of Back Bay.
Thousands of tundra swans, snow and Canada geese and a large variety of ducks visit the refuge during the fall/winter migration. Refuge waterfowl populations usually peak during December and January. The refuge also provides habitat for other wildlife, including such threatened and endangered species as the loggerhead sea turtle, piping plover and recently recovered species like the brown pelican and bald eagle.
Back Bay NWR provides over eight miles of scenic trails, a visitor contact station, interpretive programming and, with advance scheduling, group educational opportunities. We are located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, immediately south of Sandbridge beach at the southern end of Sandpiper Road.
Outdoor facilities are open daily dawn to dusk. The Visitor Contact Station hours are 8:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. Tuesday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 4:00 P.M. weekends. The Visitor Contact Station is closed on Sundays, Labor Day through Memorial Day and closed holidays, except Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to False Cape State Park
While in Virginia Beach, took a little bike ride through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge all the way to False Cape State Park. It was a beautiful day with some fantastic scenery. Also it was a very easy bike ride, remains flat pretty much the entire way. The trail ends at a beach called Barbour Hill. Song is “The Forest For the Trees” by The Skints. I do not own any music in the video.

SUMMARY
=======
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Virginia is located in the independent city of Virginia Beach. Established in 1938 in an isolated portion of the former Princess Anne County, it is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The administrative office is located on Sandbridge Road at Sigma between Lago Mar and Sandbridge Beach. The Visitor Contact Center is accessed via Sandpiper Road from the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach, which is the southernmost area of development on the Atlantic Coast of Virginia.
Most of the 9,062.45-acre (36.6744 km2) fresh water refuge is on the Currituck Banks Peninsula, which borders the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Back Bay of the Currituck Sound on the west. As part of Virginia's Outer Banks, the refuge's barrier islands feature large sand dunes, maritime forests, fresh water marshes, ponds, ocean beach, and large impoundments for wintering wildfowl. The majority of refuge marshlands are on islands contained within the waters of Back Bay. It is considered by conservationists to be an important link along the Atlantic Flyway for migratory birds such as snow geese.
The refuge adjoins Virginia's False Cape State Park. Beyond that, the northern edge of North Carolina's Outer Banks lies immediately to the south. A tram runs through the refuge, providing the only public access to False Cape State Park other than by foot, bicycle or boat. A bicycle/pedestrian trail is planned through the refuge between Sandbridge and Lago Mar.
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge - Vlog Day - 16
I went down to Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday. It was a good day. If you have never been - I highly recommend. It's got birds, frogs, turtles, and even snakes, but you might have to look close to spot some of these. I spotted a Great blue Heron and an osprey.

Virginia Beach, a coastal city in southeastern Virginia, lies where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. A 3-mile boardwalk stretches along its beach-lined oceanfront. The bayside First Landing State Park marks the 1607 arrival of the Jamestown colonists from England. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center exhibits ocean life including sharks, rays and sea turtles in globally themed habitats.
Virginia Beach offers the classic beach vacation, and maintains a long-standing reputation as a family-friendly oceanfront resort. Visitors are greeted by a 300-foot wide beach lined by Virginia Beach’s three-mile concrete oceanfront Boardwalk. The resort offers a mild climate year-round. Itineraries include lazy days on the beach, the state parks and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge beckon, hiking, kayaking, and biking adventures. Fishing, golfing, whale watching, dolphin watching, historic landmarks, and exciting attractions and popular events are part of the Beach experience.
With 35 miles of sandy beaches, a 3-mile concrete oceanfront boardwalk and nearby outdoor activities, it's no surprise that Virginia Beach is a prime tourist destination. The city has worked hard to shed its reputation as a rowdy 'Redneck Riviera,' and hey, the beach is wider and cleaner now and there are fewer louts. Beach aside, you'll find some lovely parks and nature sites beyond the crowded high-rises lining the shore. Expect thick crowds, heavy traffic and high prices if visiting in the summer.

Feral pigs going hog wild in Hampton Roads
VIRGINIA BEACH -- This little piggy went to the market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy escaped its owners, turned feral and made its home right here in Hampton Roads.
Wildlife bilogists are in the midst of a battle with feral hogs. They're trying to eliminate them in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and at False Cape State Park.
Experts consider them an invasive species that, if not eliminated, could cause you big problems.
Right now, the pigs are confined to the refuge and park, where they continuously tear up marsh land established to protect waterfowl like the American Black Duck, Tundra Swan, Glossy Ibis and many other shore birds.
On a recent visit to Back Bay to learn about efforts to control and even eliminate the feral hog population, there was clear evidence of the pigs.
That's the pig droppings right there. Yeah, and that's from yesterday, explains Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge biologist John Gallegos.
He's working closely with state biologists to stay on the leading edge of the Commonwealth's wild hog problem.
A problem Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries biologist Peter Acker says is a growing issue in many southern states.
They have gotten inudated with hogs and now it's beyond any control. So, we're trying to cut this off before it starts and before it becomes a big issue because when they do get established, they're very hard to get rid of, he says.
One method of getting rid of the hogs is through trapping and humane euthanization. On the refuge and at the state park, biologists have set up about a dozen traps baited with corn.
They also have a number of trail cameras set up to watch the pigs.
Once we determine that this regular pig activity is occuring at a location the waterfowl are depending upon for foods, we set up a trail camera and this trail camera essentially provides us with a frequency of use by the feral hogs. When are they here -- what time of day or night are they here -- that allows us to figure out when we should set up our traps or our control activities to keep this damage from happening, explains Gallegos
Pigs aren't making their homes just in Hampton Roads.
We do have three established populations -- one in Southwestern Virginia, one in Culpepper and Orange counties and one here at Back Bay and False Cape, Acker notes. Each established population would be somewhere in the range of, this one might be the smallest, in the 20 to 50 size. Central Virginia probably has several hundred.
It's the numbers that concern them. The animals have a proclivity to procreate and with food plentiful this season, population control efforts are not optional.
If we weren't doing any control activity at all with them, then the poplulation would rapidly explode, says Gallegos.
Acker adds They procreate like crazy. They can reproduce early, at less than a year old. They can have several litters a year of four to six to eight piglets each litter.
The damage and disease they can spread, if the population grows out of control, could be catasrophic, not only to the habitat at the refuge and state park but also to local farmers and the pork industry.
Visualize a pig turning over the ground in a farmer's soy bean field or a corn field. It would be a disaster for that farmer, says Gallegos.
Acker says the pigs carry troublesome diseases that could drastically, drastically impact the pork industry in this state if a couple of them made their way into the herds of pigs on farms -- it would be a huge impact.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, feral swine have been known to carry or transmit over 30 diseases and 37 parasites that can be transmitted to livestock, people, pets and wildlife.
They also dramatically alter habitat and hurt native species that a lot of people are concerned about, our agencies included, says Acker.
When the feral hogs attempt to eat the corn in the traps, they trip a taut string, which runs across the width of the cage, it brings a gate down, trapping them inside. The animals are then euthanized.
Each October, hog permits are available during deer season, but experts say hunting is not the preferred method of eliminating the pig population.
Hunters will kill a few here and there, but it's not a way that we can put a big dent in a population, says Acker.
How did these pigs became a problem in the first place?
A lot of the problem has come from accidental releases, but most of it has been due to people releasing pigs, on purpose, in order to establish a huntable population. And it's something, it's illegal, but also we really want to discourage it, because of all the damage they can do and because of how hard they are to get rid of, once they are established, Acker states.
You are encouraged to call the Virginia Wildlife Conflict Helpline at 1-855-571-9003 if you see feral hogs or think a population is getting established.

37 Virginia State Park Challenge #8: False Cape & Touring Back Bay NWR
False Cape State Park is probably this most remote state park in Virginia. It borders Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the north, North Carolina to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. You can only access the park through biking, boating, and hiking. During the summer you can cut through Back Bay NWR, but the trail closes in the winter for the migratory bird season. You have to make the trek along the beach. However, a winter tram tour is offered for those interested in exploring both the refuge and park a little more quickly.
