Backbone Rock - Shady Valley Tennessee - Check out the Snake Head
Backbone Rock National Recreation Area
Beaver Dam Railroad Company tunnel in the Cherokee National Forest. In the early 1900s when timber harvesting was a primary industry, a 20-foot-long hole had to be blasted through rock to accommodate the railroad. Now known as “The Shortest Tunnel in the World,” after the blast and the track was laid, the train engine’s smoke stack could not pass through. The tunnel’s top had to be hand-chiseled to solve the problem. A recreation area offers camping, rappelling, and fishing as well as hiking with one trail leading across the top of the rock, and the other taking you to the 45-foot Backbone Falls. Two double campsites and trails connecting to the Appalachian Trail.
Below history of this rock archway is from: (visit link)
During the early 1900’s one of the primary industries in the Southern Appalachian Mountains was timber harvesting. The Tennessee Lumber Company moved to the Sutherland area at this time and set up a mill to cut timber. The company hired 400 men to keep the operation running. The Tennessee Lumber Company sawed 100,000 board feet a day. To get the timber to market, railroad lines were constructed throughout the land. Most of the track was laid following the natural terrain.
In 1901 the Empire Mining Company was laying track and they came to a stone ridge that stands seventy-five feet high, and was approximately 20 feet thick. The ridge was named Backbone Rock because of its appearance. This rock was above the Sutherland Community. It was an extension from the Iron Mountain Range. Beaverdam Creek flowed around the end of the rock.
The company decided to blast a short tunnel through the rock to lay its tracks. The Empire Mining Company built the Beaver Dam Railroad to connect with the Virginia-Carolina line. After the tunnel was blasted and the track was laid the smoke stack of the train's engine could not pass through the tunnel. The top of the tunnel had to be hand chiseled to eliminate this problem.
The lumber was about used up by 1912 and the Tennessee Lumber Company moved its saw mill. After logging stopped the United States Forest Service used the railroad bed as a truck trail. A trail was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s to the top of Backbone Rock above the tunnel. Today Highway 133 goes through the tunnel.
The area around Backbone Rock was developed by the Tennessee Wildlife Agency for camping, picnicking, fishing, and hiking. Beaverdam Creek runs next to Backbone Rock and through the picnic area. You will find 44 picnic tables, two logged sheltered picnic tables, open fireplaces, horseshoe pits, and camping sites. There are several hiking trails. One goes across the top of the rock. Another hiking trail takes you to Backbone Rock Falls. Now the area is part of the Cherokee National Forest and is maintained by the forest services.

100 feet straight up on both sides, a Zip line down, rappelling and climbing gave folks a great chance to demo Faith in the ropes and Kari's coaching.
Backbone Falls & Rock, TN 6-7-18
Backbone Falls and Rock are located within the Cherokee National Forest in Johnson County, Tennessee. The tunnel, constructed in 1901, is known as the shortest tunnel in the world. A short trail leads to the top of the tunnel and rock wall if you are so inclined to give it a try. Trail 198 is a short (1 mile?) loop that leads you to the 45 foot cascade waterfall know as Backbone Falls. Thanks for watching! *I annotated the wrong county route, it's 133 not 91.
26 laps on Baby Falls
26 laps for my 26th birthday! Chose to avoid flat landings on most of them for obvious reasons.
What a long but sweet day! Drove a few hours from Asheville to meet a client, got a fun Ocoee lap in, and finished with 26 laps of Baby Falls on the Tellico.
Thanks Jack for the idea and for joining. I roped my boat up for the first lap or two then decided that wasn't any easier than just carrying it. That hike gets tiring; after 5 laps I had to ditch the drysuit and the base layer.
Was able to record every lap except for lap 18; I'm not sure what happened there. I came back the next morning and did 6 more plus 3 laps on Bald River Falls for a total of 35 waterfall laps in under 24hrs.
Level was about ~1.5. Too low for me to want to do the rest of the run, but the falls are still great

Holston Mountain Seasonal Road
05-03-18
At the top of Holston Mountain TN, the Forest Service has a seasonal road labelled going down almost to Elizabethton. I thought I'd give it a try with the 4Runner.
We turned around when things started getting too narrow and loose for out liking in the fading light in the shadow of the mountain wheeling alone without enough recovery gear.

GIANT RIVER BUFFALO FISH! | Fishing Frogs for Bass Under Trees
I'm bass fishing with Carson on the river in his jet boat going after largemouth bass on the bank. We caught a giant buffalo fish on a crankbait while we were bass fishing. The best fishing technique for big bass on this trip was using a frog and fishing in under trees in the shade. We caught Guadalupe bass and some other small bass on crankbaits and spinnerbaits but the biggest bass clearly wanted a frog. I'll show you how to fish specific fishing lures in the river to catch bass. I'll also share some of the fishing rods I'm using on this trip to make it easiest to cast where the bass are hiding. The river that we are fishing is located south of Austin, TX and it is a shallow rocky river that requires the use of a kayak or aluminum boat to get around to the various pools where fish are living.
