The Weir by Conor McPherson at Backstage Theatre, Longford presented by Decadent
The Weir
by Conor McPhearson
at Backstage Theatre
Fri 1st & Sat 2nd Sept 2017
Full details and tickets on backstage.ie
On a stormy night in Brendan’s pub, isolated above a Leitrim town, the men are gathering for their evening pint. The arrival of a stranger in their midst – a beautiful woman – spurs them to impress her with stories. They are stories of souls past, spirits present and spectres unforeseen. One story, however, is more haunting, more sinister and more real than any of them could have foreseen.
Quietly compelling and strangely chilling, Decadent’s production marks the second major Irish revival of this undoubted modern classic. On its première in 1997, The Weir won the Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Olivier Awards for Best New Play, and established McPherson’s eerie tale as a masterpiece of modern theatre. Following an eight month run on Broadway, the New York Times described the play as “beautiful and devious” and hailed the playwright, as “a first-rate story-teller.”

Weighing In Comedy coming to Backstage Theatre longford
Weighing In comes to Backstage Theatre on Thurs 13th Sept 2018 tickets and full details on backstage.ie
written by Ger Gallagher
presented by Dolmen Productions
Starring: Isobel Mahon (Glenroe, The Clinic) and Rose Henderson (Fair City, Father Ted)
Directed by: Caroline FitzGerald.
Weighing-In is a fast paced comedy play about life, love and dieting - and how we all need to adjust the scales to find the right balance.
This topical play deals with the modern obsession of dieting. Set in the Easi-Slim diet club we meet the highly driven Pam (Isobel Mahon) and the motherly Breda (Rose Henderson). Both attend the weekly clinic for the weigh-in and strike up an unlikely friendship.
Easi-Slim’s recent new member - upwardly mobile Pam McGowan has cruised into town in her soft top sports car. Pam has reached her target weight and has only signed up to maintain, and brag about the four stone she’s lost. Breda has diligently attended the Easi-Slim meetings but just can’t manage to win the battle of the bulge– until Pam comes along to power-walk her into shape.
Breda becomes a disciple of the high-priestess of low-carbs and is bowled over by just how fabulous Pam’s jet-set lifestyle really is. With her low-calorie intake and rigorous exercise regime, Pam certainly lives life in the fasting lane. In fact, the only part of Pam that weighs too much is her over-bloated ego. Breda’s gushing admiration for her new diet guru buddy only serves to make Pam all the more condescending and insufferable. However, when Pam’s mask begins to slip, Breda is reminded that things aren’t always what they appear to be. Sometimes, you already have the life you wished for.
‘Pacey, tender and packed with laughs, Weighing-In is a calorie-free treat’.
Eithne Shortall, Sunday Times.
‘No flab on this weighty drama.’ Chris Wasser. The Herald.
‘Infectiously enjoyable’. Michael Moffatt. Irish Mail on Sunday.
‘An entertaining piece that will leave a smile on your face’. The Red Curtain Review.

Canadian actor Charles Ross spent much of his childhood in a galaxy far, far away, watching Star Wars videos over -- and over -- and over again. The result of this misspent youth is his hilarious show, One-Man Star Wars™ Trilogy, where he single-handedly plays all the characters, sings the music, flies the ships, fights the battles and condenses the plots into just sixty minutes!
One-Man Star Wars™ Trilogy, written by Ross and directed by TJ Dawe, has toured the world since January 2001, delighting audiences as far afield as Dubai and Sydney. It has been performed off-Broadway in New York and in London's West End, at several official Star Wars Celebration events, Glastonbury Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe and numerous theatres around the globe.
Now Ross is taking his hilarious show on its first ever tour of Ireland.

THE PLAYS
Conversations on a Homecoming
County Galway in the 1970s and even the humble small-town pub can be a magnet for dreamers. Now in his 30s, and over a long drinking session on a winter's evening, Michael -- recently returned from New York after a ten year absence -- has a reunion with old friends in The White House. He was the one member among them who got away to live the dream and now he's back.
A Whistle in the Dark
It's 1960 and Michael Carney is an Irish emigrant living in Coventry, England, with his new wife Betty. Michael has integrated well into English society, but the same can't be said of his wild brothers who are lodging with him. Tensions boil over after the arrival of his father and youngest brother from home.
