Beijing tiger attack: Whose fault is it?
A court in Beijing Tuesday began a long-awaited hearing into whether Beijing Badaling Wildlife Park was responsible for a tiger attack that injured a woman surnamed Zhao and killed her mother. On November 15, 2016, Zhao and her father sued the park, and asked for 1.55 million yuan in compensation. However, the park said it had fulfilled its obligations of warning visitors, acting immediately during the accident and paying for the initial medical and accommodation fees on humanitarian grounds. The verdict will be announced at a later date. Chinese netizens reacted with a combination of shock and outrage. Who is to blame? The park or the victims?

A woman was eaten alive and another seriously injured after they jumped out of a car in a tiger enclosure at a Chinese safari park
Dramatic video footage captures the middle-aged woman flouting the warnings by getting out of the car, and she was killed instantly after she followed the younger woman out of the car at the Badaling Wildlife World, near the Great Wall of China
Both had ignored repeated warnings to stay inside the vehicle, according to local media
It was reported that the family - one older woman, a younger woman, a child and a man - were in the park, just over an hour north-west of Beijing, on Saturday
The younger woman and the man are understood to have had an argument, at which point she stormed out of the car, reports Chinese media
The older woman then followed her out - and was instantly attacked by the Siberian tiger
This is not the first time the tigers have attacked someone in the park: two years ago, a male employee was killed by one of the tigers
Entrance to the park costs £5, and visitors can feed the animals - although they aren't allowed to get close to the attraction's larger residents

One woman was killed and another injured after a pair of tigers pounced on them at Beijing's Badaling Wildlife Park on Saturday afternoon.
The tigers attacked one of the women when she left her vehicle and walked a few meters away from the car. The surveillance video footage shows the woman being dragged by the tiger, which prompted the second woman, who later turned out to be her mother, to rush for help. However, she didn't survive the attack.
While the park allows visitors to drive their own cars in a safari-style tour, they are prohibited to get out as the animals roam freely through the park. But the first woman got out of the car after an alleged argument, putting her life at risk, according to several media reports.
The park has been closed for the time being. But the weekend attack wasn’t the first. In August 2014, a security guard was killed in a tiger attack at the same park.

China tiger attack. A woman was mauled to death and another was seriously injured, when they were attacked by Siberian tigers at a wildlife park in Beijing. The pair reportedly got into an argument, while driving round Beijing Badaling Wildlife World, which ended when one of the women decided to get out of their car. CCTV footage shows the moment a tiger leaps at the woman from behind, grabbing her and pulling her away from the vehicle.
The attack prompted a man and a woman to get out of the car, to chase after the tiger in a bid to help. The second woman was killed by a tiger, which then carried her body away. It is reported that park staff rushed to help the pair, but were only able to save one of them. The injured woman is recovering from her wounds in hospital, while a child who was also in the car escaped unharmed. Beijing Badaling Wildlife World allows customers to drive their own cars, through an open space where animals roam free, but visitors are not allowed to leave their vehicles in certain enclosures.
A spokesperson for the park refused to comment on the attack, and said the attraction was closed for two days due to forecasts of heavy rain, the Associated Press news agency reported. A security guard was reportedly mauled to death, at the park by a tiger in 2014 reports said.

A woman was mauled to death by a Siberian tiger and her female companion was injured while on a safari-style tour in China, state-run media reported Monday.
Part of the horrific attack at the Badaling Wildlife World animal park near Beijing on Saturday was caught on a security camera and provided to CNN by China's state television station CCTV. The park allows visitors to drive their vehicles through a tiger enclosure.
The video shows a woman get out of the passenger seat of a car and walk over to the driver. As the driver opens his door, the woman is suddenly grabbed from behind by a tiger and forcefully dragged away.
The video shows the driver and a second woman passenger rush to the woman's aid before a Jeep heads to the scene.
The rest happened off screen, but the state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the second woman was the one mauled to death -- by another tiger as she tried to rescue the first woman, who was injured.
Several signs at the park read: Cherish your life. Never get out of your car.
Xinhua reported that an investigation into the incident was underway and that the zoo had been temporarily closed.
The Beijing Tourism website says that the park is famous for raising fierce animals in large groups in open areas and that it has 10,000 wild animals, including brown bears, Malayan Sun bears, leopards and wild wolves.
