Seattle to Bainbridge Island Day Trip!
Who knew a short 35-minute ferry ride could take us to a town with so much to offer? Let’s talk everything Bainbridge.
The whole Maple + Main team ventured across the Puget Sound together. The Seattle ferry isn’t simply a mode of transportation itself, it’s a scenic experience of the surrounding areas and makes for a fun trip.
After arriving in Bainbridge, the team headed to the 5-star rated Good Egg restaurant. Good Egg utilizes fresh produce from the surrounding area. Besides being a great restaurant, Good Egg also puts on fun events. Check out their events page here:
With full bellies, the team was ready to have an exciting day of shop-hopping. Salt House was first on the list where Bethanie found a particularly special item called ‘Roman Salt’. Her son’s name is Roman whom recently finished culinary art school, so of course, she had to get it for him.
90% of Salt House’s product are made in the USA with most being in the PNW. We love that! From small-batched foods to laundry detergent, there’s a product for you.
B.I. Barkery was a highlight for Brea as she found plenty of options for her beloved dog, Bear. This is the perfect spot for dog lovers with specialty items and organic treats.
Bon Bon Collections, specializing in ‘Bainbridge Island Fudge’, is a must visit where you’ll most likely be like Alise and go home with 5 lbs of fudge (she claims it was all for gifting ... yeah, right!). The fudge is made in-house daily and makes your visit that much sweeter! Plan the flavors you’ll want to try here:
Churchmouse Yarns & Teas had a plethora of products that really pulled in each one of our team members. From clothes to dishware to their lavender products — grown in the San Juan Islands — one can easily spend hours just within this one shop. Stay up to date by signing up for their newsletter here:
Seaside Station was our team’s last stop but it’s perfect to be your first stop being right by the ferry terminal. Located in an old gas station even the aesthetic is worth seeing. As a commuter market selling everything from flowers to hoodies, there’s something for everyone here. We loved the Bainbridge Island logo hoodies!
Our time quickly came to a close and we realized how much we didn’t get to see and do. Bainbridge part 2 is a must! Let us know your favorite things to do on Bainbridge and we’ll try them out our next trip.
Happy day tripping!

Bainbridge Island was formed during the last ice age—13,000 to 15,000 years ago—when the 3,000-foot-thick (910 m) Vashon Glacier scraped out the Puget Sound and Hood Canal basins.
Bainbridge Island is located within the cool Puget Sound Basin, east of the Kitsap Peninsula, directly east of the Manette Peninsula and west of the City of Seattle. The island is approximately five miles (8 km) wide and ten miles (16 km) long, encompassing nearly 17,778 acres (71.95 km2), and is one of the larger islands in Puget Sound.
Bainbridge Island shorelines border the main body of Puget Sound, a large protected embayment, Port Orchard Bay, and two high-current tidal passages, Rich Passage and Agate Pass. The island is characterized by an irregular coastline of approximately 53 miles (85 km), with numerous bays and inlets and a significant diversity of other coastal land forms, including spits, bluffs, dunes, lagoons, cuspate forelands, tombolos, tide flats, streams and tidal deltas, islands, and rocky outcrops. The high point is 425-foot (130 m) Toe Jam Hill.
On the Kitsap Peninsula, Bremerton and Poulsbo lie across the Port Orchard channel to the west, and the city of Port Orchard lies across Rich Passage to the south.
The island is quite hilly and is known for its popular Chilly Hilly bicycle ride every February. This ride has been the unofficial start to the bicycling season in the Pacific Northwest since 1975.
Bainbridge Island is connected to the Kitsap Peninsula by the Agate Pass Bridge carrying SR 305 over Agate Passage. The only other public way off the island is by Washington State Ferries service from Winslow in Eagle Harbor to Colman Dock (Pier 52) in Seattle.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.02 square miles (168.40 km2), of which, 27.61 square miles (71.51 km2) is land and 37.41 square miles (96.89 km2) is water. Enoch H. Kanaya Part 2 Interview on the Internment of Japanese-Americans
Enoch continues the story of the incarceration of US citizens during World War II.
Enoch was born and raised in Portland, OR and served with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in France and Italy. The 442nd was made up solely of Japanese Americans and had an official casualty rate of 93 percent, although some sources place it many times higher. The 442nd became the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.
Enoch's story is similar to thousands of other Nisei, or second-generation Japanese-Americans. Even as they fought in Europe, most had family members who were among the 120,000 forced to spend up to four years in U.S. internment camps.
Though Kanaya's older brother, Jimmie, had volunteered for the U.S. Army before the outbreak of war — and would eventually rise to the rank of colonel — Kanaya, his parents and sister were considered security risks (as were all West Coast Japanese- Americans down to 1/16 blood) and held at an internment camp in Minidoka, Idaho, following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
We were behind barbed wire, Kanaya said. I was born in America and wanted to fight for my country.
He was initially ruled an ineligible enemy alien because of his Japanese ancestry and forced to work as a potato picker. The doubts of his fellow Americans only made him keener to prove his patriotism, he said.
Eventually re-classified as 1-A, he was drafted in 1944, and won the Bronze Star for his efforts as a bazooka man in bloody battles with the Germans, including his role in the brutal battle to seize the Gothic Line in Northern Italy in April 1945.
He and the other surviving members of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat team were recently awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest possible civilian award, in ceremonies held in Washington, DC on November 2, 2011.
