Bakong Temple in Cambodia | Attraction in Siem Reap Province
Travel on National Hightway 6 from Phnom Penh city to Siem Reap province for about 4 hours, we will get to the entrance of Bakong Temple. We need to turn left and travel on a small paved road for another 45min to be at Bakong Temple. It's about 308.10 kilometers from Phnom Penh to Bakong Temple. The temple is located at Roluos district, in Siem Reap province. From the entrance, we will reach Preah Ko temple first then Bakong temple next. So Bakong temple is at south of Preah Ko temple. It's a beautiful and amazing temple registered as Angkor World Heritage in 1992. It's one of the temple in Rolous temple group at Siem Reap. We got there around 11:50am, while it's so hot and we had lunch after a visit of the temple. It's a great trip.

Bakong Temple | ប្រាសាទបាគង | Siem Reap | Cambodia
Bakong (Khmer: ប្រាសាទបាគង) is the first temple mountain of sandstone constructed by rulers of the Khmer empire at Angkor near modern Siem Reap in Cambodia. In the final decades of the 9th century AD, it served as the official state temple of King Indravarman I in the ancient city of Hariharalaya, located in an area that today is called Roluos. The structure of Bakong took shape of stepped pyramid, popularly identified as temple mountain of early Khmer temple architecture. The striking similarity of the Bakong and Borobudur temple in Java, going into architectural details such as the gateways and stairs to the upper terraces, suggests strongly that Borobudur was served as the prototype of Bakong. There must have been exchanges of travelers, if not mission, between Khmer kingdom and the Sailendras in Java. Transmitting to Cambodia not only ideas, but also technical and architectural details of Borobudur, including arched gateways in corbelling method.
In 802 AD, the first king of Angkor Jayavarman II declared the sovereignty of Cambodia. After ups and downs, he established his capital at Hariharalaya. A few decades later, his successors constructed Bakong in stages as the first temple mountain of sandstone at Angkor. The inscription on its stele (classified K.826) says that in 881 King Indravarman I dedicated the temple to the god Shiva and consecrated its central religious image, a lingam whose name Sri Indresvara was a combination of the king's own and the suffix -esvara which stood for Shiva (Iśvara). According to George Coedès, the devarāja cult consisted in the idea of divine kingship as a legitimacy of royal power, but later authors stated that it doesn't necessarily involve the cult of physical persona of the ruler himself.
Bakong enjoyed its status as the state temple of Angkor for only a few years, but later additions from the 12th or 13th centuries testify that it was not abandoned. Toward the end of the 9th century, Indravarman's son and successor Yasovarman I moved the capital from Hariharalaya to the area north of Siem Reap now known as Angkor, where he founded the new city of Yaśodharapura around a new temple mountain called Bakheng.

Bakong (Khmer temple), Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Bakong is the first official state temple constructed at Angkor. It was completed in 881 by King Indravarman I, some 75 years after the foundation of the Khmer empire. Bakong is located in an area approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Siem Reap that today is alled Roluos. At the time of its foundation, the temple of Bakong belonged to the Khmer capital city of Hariharalaya, and functioned as an official state temple. A few years after the its foundation, however, King Yasovarman I moved the capital of the empire to the area north of Siem Reap that is today called Angkor Thom, where he founded a new capital city called Yasodharapura.
Bakong is a temple pyramid constructed of grey stone and originally dedicated to Shiva. Eight reddish brick temple towers were built around the pyramid. The tower atop the pyramid was added much later, probably in the 12th century. Its style is that of the 12th century temple Angkor Wat. Bakong is the largest of a group of three temples that today comprise what is called the Roluos Group: the others are Preah Ko and Lolei, both of which feature red brick temple towers similar to those of the Bakong but have no pyramid. All three temples date from the second half of the 9th century, and all three originally belonged to the Khmer capital of Hariharalaya.
This video is about the temple, with an emphasis on the beautiful sculpted lintels that can be observed on the brick towers. The music is Kama Phal by Naked Planet.

Siem Reap, Cambodia - Preah Khan
Preah Khan is one of the most intruiging temples in Siem Reap. It is built as a symmetrical structure with corridors running down its centre to arrive at a stupa right in the centre. The temple has fallen into ruin, which adds to its charm, and is a must see for any visitor to Siem Reap.
