The total height of Balanced Rock is about 128 feet (39 m), with the balancing rock rising 55 feet (16.75 m) above the base. The big rock on top is the size of three school buses. Until recently, Balanced Rock had a companion - a similar, but much smaller balanced rock named Chip Off The Old Block, which fell during the winter of 1975/1976.
Balanced Rock can be seen from the park's main road. There is also a short loop trail leading around the base of the rock.

We spent most of Day 8 of our roadtrip across the southwest at Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. Here's look at a few of the sights we saw at the Windows Section of the park. Some of the short hikes in the Windows Section include Balanced Rock, Garden of Eden, Double Arch, Turret Arch, and Cove Arch.

Arches National Park lies atop an unstable underground salt bed that is responsible for the various rock formations of this mecca for travelers from all over the world: arches (more than 2,500 arches), spires, balanced rocks, sandstone fins, and eroded monoliths.
Located just 5 miles (8 km) north of Moab is Arches National Park, which contains the world's largest concentration of natural sandstone arches. Although over 2,000 arches are located within the park's 76,518 acres, the park also contains an astounding variety of other geological formations. Colossal sandstone fins, massive balanced rocks, soaring pinnacles and spires dwarf visitors as they explore the park's viewpoints and hiking trails.
A paved scenic drive takes visitors to many of the major viewpoints within the park. The park’s rock formations delight children as well as adults, with many easy trails providing opportunities for kids to get out of the car and explore the arches up close.
Hikers can choose from a wide variety of trails, from short twenty minute walks leading right up to many of the largest arches in the park, to more adventurous hikes into lesser seen areas.

USA Trip--Day 8 Part 1--Arches N.P--Upper/Lower Delicate Arch Viewpoint Trail and Balanced Rock
Today is day 8 of the USA Trip. Today is full of many attractions and that is why day 8 is split into two videos. Today we will be going
to Arches National Park. We will drive on Arches Scenic Dr. Then we will go to the La Sal Mountains Overlook. Then we will go to Balanced Rock. Then we will look at the Wolfe Ranch Rock Art. Lastly that we will take the Upper and Lower Viewpoint Trails of the Delicate Arch. In part two we will be driving through the mountains of Colorado.

We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 34th episode, we leave Arches National Park and drive Willow Springs Road / Trail (all 27 miles) till the BLM campground. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Situated near Moab, Utah and partially within Arches National Park, Willow Springs Road is a great way to experience the Arches backcountry without the crowds. Desert washes, dinosaur tracks, and unique rock formations make this a great road to combine with Eye of the Whale and Tower Arch for a great day of wheeling within a National Park. It can also be the backdoor road into Arches National Park that avoids the toll gate assuming you walk, mountain bike or drive a four-wheel drive vehicle along the rocky and sandy road for the 4-mile stretch that ends at Balance Rock and the paved road. Willow Springs Road begins by turning east off Highway 191, which is west of the park's borders. You will eventually see a large sign marking the spot when you have entered the national park. Past the sign you must obey all of the park's rules. (In our video we are coming from the opposite direction because we were inside Arches National Park)
Along the way sits a giant set of rocks sticking out of the desert landscape west of Willow Flats that overlook the Balance Rock and Windows Section in the distance. The best part is there is really no one out here other than the occasional passing Jeep. The solitude is rare treat in one of the more popular parks in the country. There are some beautiful and unusual sights to see along this road that are not seen by most people visiting the area.
Just west of the park's marker are dinosaur tracks though what was once mud and what is now hardened Slickrock. There is a ton of dispersed camping along both sides of the road west of the park's entry sign. There are several mountain biking trails in multiple directions along the low rolling hills outside the park boundaries and are well marked. Overall this is a pretty cool spot in terms of how much it offers, however desolate the terrain. As usual in the desert, stay off the cryptobiotic soil and be careful about exposure and dehydration.
Two-wheel drive and lower profile cars can drive east on Willow Spring Road relatively easily until the sign that signifies the park boundary. East of there is the Jeep trail. While there are some deep sandy spots along the way, it is a fun ride overall.

When people make lists of top national parks to visit in the United States, Arches National Park is always in the top ten. With over 2,000 natural stone arches, incredible pinnacles, and gravity defying balanced rocks, Arches is nothing short of breathtaking.
Arches is over 76,000 acres in size, and has some of the most iconic scenery of the American Southwest. Chances are you've seen pictures of Arches before. It's world famous Delicate Arch has become a symbol of the state of Utah, and the West.
As far as activities in Arches, you can drive through a large portion of the park, there is camping, rock climbing, and of course hiking. This wonderland of red rock is located just outside the small city of Moab, a mecca for outdoor adventurers. Make sure to plan a good long stay if you come, not only to see Arches, but nearby Canyonlands National Park as well.
There are a lot of different hiking opportunities in Arches National Park. From short easy hikes with the kids, to long difficult primitive trails that go off into the wilderness. Permits can be obtained for backpacking, and even canyoneering adventures in the park, although climbing any arch is prohibited.
We've hiked many of the trails in Arches including a few on the difficult list, and each has its own challenges. Basic trail safety should be observed on all hikes in the park no matter how difficult. Arches is located in a harsh desert environment with many perils for the ill prepared. Make sure to bring lots of water, especially in the summer months. There are very few places to find water in the back-country. It is important to stay on trails on all hikes because of steep cliffs, even on popular trails such as Delicate Arch or Double O arch. There are lots of pokey plants around, such as cactus and yucca, and although they mostly come out at night, you could run into a rattlesnake. It's also important to stay on trails to protect the fragile desert soil crusts that absorb moisture and help prevent erosion.
Whatever your flavor of adventure in Arches, you are in for a treat. This place is truly magical!

Arches National Park is a U.S. National Park in eastern Utah. It is known for preserving over 2000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations.
The park is located just outside of Moab, Utah, and is 76,679 acres (31,031 ha) in area. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Forty-three arches have collapsed due to erosion since 1970. The park receives 10 inches (250 mm) of rain a year on average.
Administered by the National Park Service, the area was originally created as a National Monument on April 12, 1929. It was redesignated as a National Park on November 12, 1971.[3]
The national park lies atop an underground evaporite layer or salt bed, which is the main cause of the formation of the arches, spires, balanced rocks, sandstone fins, and eroded monoliths in the area. This salt bed is thousands of feet thick in places, and was deposited in the Paradox Basin of the Colorado Plateau some 300 million years ago when a sea flowed into the region and eventually evaporated. Over millions of years, the salt bed was covered with debris eroded from the Uncompahgre Uplift to the northeast. During the Early Jurassic (about 210 Ma) desert conditions prevailed in the region and the vast Navajo Sandstone was deposited. An additional sequence of stream laid and windblown sediments, the Entrada Sandstone (about 140 Ma), was deposited on top of the Navajo. Over 5000 feet (1500 m) of younger sediments were deposited and have been mostly eroded away. Remnants of the cover exist in the area including exposures of the Cretaceous Mancos Shale. The arches of the area are developed mostly within the Entrada formation.[4]
The weight of this cover caused the salt bed below it to liquefy and thrust up layers of rock into salt domes. The evaporites of the area formed more unusual salt anticlines or linear regions of uplift.[4] Faulting occurred and whole sections of rock subsided into the areas between the domes. In some places, they turned almost on edge. The result of one such 2,500-foot (760 m) displacement, the Moab Fault, is seen from the visitor center.
As this subsurface movement of salt shaped the landscape, erosion removed the younger rock layers from the surface. Except for isolated remnants, the major formations visible in the park today are the salmon-colored Entrada Sandstone, in which most of the arches form, and the buff-colored Navajo Sandstone. These are visible in layer cake fashion throughout most of the park. Over time, water seeped into the surface cracks, joints, and folds of these layers. Ice formed in the fissures, expanding and putting pressure on surrounding rock, breaking off bits and pieces. Winds later cleaned out the loose particles. A series of free-standing fins remained. Wind and water attacked these fins until, in some, the cementing material gave way and chunks of rock tumbled out. Many damaged fins collapsed. Others, with the right degree of hardness and balance, survived despite their missing sections. These became the famous arches.
