Bald Head Island - a incredible island off the coast of North Carolina & close to Wilmington.
Bald Head Island - historically called Smith Island - is a small village that borders the Cape Fear River to west and the ocean to the east. The small village of 158 people is accessible by ferry from the small city on the other side of Cape Fear River - Southport. Once you get on the island - they do not allow cars - so you will need to rent a golf cart to get around.
While there enjoy the beach on the east side or the lighthouse - Old Baldy - on the west side close to the ferry station. Old Baldy Lighthouse is the oldest still standing lighthouse in the state of North Carolina and was built in 1817.
Bald Head Island is also a popular place for sea turtle nesting and due to the abundance of sea turtles - the residents use the phrase that they are on Turtle Time..
This island of less than 6 square miles is a wonderful place to vacation or the spend the day.

Bald Head Island is a village located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. Compared to the city of Wilmington to the north, the village of Bald Head Island is small and somewhat remote. It is only accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. Cars are not allowed; instead residents drive modified electric golf carts.
The village is revered for its picturesque nature and is a popular location for retirement. It was the primary filming location for the successful film Weekend at Bernie's in 1989, as well as being a major location in The Butcher's Wife in 1991. Old Baldy, its out-of-service lighthouse, is the oldest still standing in the state, built in 1817. It is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Bald Head Island, NC ~ Family Adventure
We spent an entire day on Bald Head Island, NC over the Labor Day Holiday. From Oak Island, NC we caught the Bald Head Island Ferry and met up with family who had rented a house for the weekend. We rented a golf cart for the day and toured the entire island. There is a lot to do and see on Bald Head. We really enjoyed going up in the Old Baldy Lighthouse.
Bald Head Island beaches are beautiful and never crowded.
The Cranes - Passing Bald Head Island, NC
March 29, 2018 two huge Port of Wilmington (NC) cranes - manufactured in China - arrived at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and passed through the channel between Bald Head Island and Oak Island - and into the Intracoastal Waterway to Wilmington. I was there with my Inspire 1 to capture some of the magic.

Bald Head Island, historically Smith Island, is a village located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, North Carolina. The population of the village was 158 at the 2010 census.The village is part of the Wilmington metropolitan area.
The village is a popular location for vacationing. It was the primary filming location for the film Weekend at Bernie's in 1989, as well as being a major location in The Butcher's Wife in 1991.
HISTORY
Bald Head Island is tiny but has played a part in two American wars. During the American Revolution, it was home to Fort George, a British fort. During the Civil War, the same redoubts served as Fort Holmes, a Confederate base of importance to shipping and smuggling.
SEA TURTLES
Bald Head Island is nationally recognized for its sea turtle nesting activity. The abundance of sea turtle nests have led visitors to use the phrase, I'm on Turtle Time, which signifies the care free (and car free) feeling of being on Bald Head Island.

Returning to Sea!
Last night, Fort Fisher State Park rangers documented a loggerhead turtle nesting on the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. This was a rare early-evening nesting event, allowing one of our Sea Turtle Interns, Matt Rutledge to get some amazing videos. This nest gives Fort Fisher their 12th nest of the season!

Timelapse of Bald Head Island ceasing to be a true island
There was a time that Bald Head Island was actually an island. It was separated from the southern end of the Fort Fisher State Recreation area by a natural inlet known as Corncake Inlet. However, in 1999 it ceased being a true island due to shoaling from Hurricane Floyd.
This isn't the first time the inlet shoaled over. It closed off following Hurricane Hazel in 1954 but opened back up in later years.
Will at some point BHI again become a natural island once again? Only nature knows.
