Fort Hill Activity Center Grand Opening
The Fort Hill Activity Center is officially open.
“I want to welcome you here to something that took us 50 years to do, but we got it done. I just want to thank the community. We were given a budget, we’re under budget and we’re on time and we listened to the community,” said the Naperville Park District’s Executive Director, Ray McGury.
Hundreds of residents came out to the grand opening, testing out the gymnastics equipment, shooting some hoops and getting a workout in.
“Everything here in the fitness center is brand new, state of the art, everything is very high tech, everything down here in our fitness center has a barcode that you can scan to track your workouts or to see a video of how the machine works,” said Kristina McGrath, Fitness Coordinator for the Fort Hill Activity Center.
In addition to a variety of fitness equipment, the Center has special programs and amenities so Naperville residents of all ages can be fit and active.
“I can see this becoming a gathering place for the seniors. The rec center provides a convenient and affordable alternative for seniors who need a place to exercise, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have been,” said Karen Courney, Co-Chair of the Naperville Senior Task Force.
The Activity Center was designed with residents of all abilities in mind, providing space for the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association to hold activities like wheelchair basketball.
“For years, Naperville fell a little bit short in providing facilities and we know that we always ask residents to drive north, and it got a little old at times, so we’re delighted that Fort Hill is here,” said Executive Director of the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, Sandy Gbur.
A delight that is shared by many in the community, including the Park District’s Executive Director from 1973 to 1981, Walter C. Johnson.
“It’s a dream. It’s just something that we would have loved to have but it was too early in our development for anybody to envision something like this. It’s just beautiful, I’m just so amazed at the size and what went into this,” said Johnson.
Fort Hill Activity Center also features an indoor track, café and children’s area.
