The B&O Railroad Museum is a museum exhibiting historic railroad equipment in Baltimore, Maryland, originally named the Baltimore & Ohio Transportation Museum when it opened on July 4, 1953. It has been called one of the most significant collections of railroad treasures in the world and has the largest collection of 19th-century locomotives in the U.S. The museum is located in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's old Mount Clare Station and adjacent roundhouse, part of the B&O's sprawling Mount Clare Shops site begun in 1829, the oldest railroad manufacturing complex in the United States.
Mount Clare is considered to be a birthplace of American railroading, as the site of the first regular railroad passenger service in the U.S., beginning on May 22, 1830. It was also to this site that the first telegraph message, What hath God wrought? was sent on May 24, 1844, from Washington, D.C., using Samuel F. B. Morse's electric telegraph.
The museum houses collections of 19th- and 20th-century artifacts related to America's railroads. The collection includes 250 pieces of railroad rolling stock, 15,000 artifacts, 5,000 cubic feet (140 m3) of archival material, four significant 19th-century buildings, including the historic roundhouse, and a mile of track, considered the most historic mile of railroad track in the United States.

The B&O Railroad Museum is a museum exhibiting historic railroad equipment in Baltimore, Maryland, originally named the Baltimore & Ohio Transportation Museum when it opened on July 4, 1953. It has been called one of the most significant collections of railroad treasures in the world and has the largest collection of 19th-century locomotives in the U.S.[3][4] The museum is located in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's old Mount Clare Station and adjacent roundhouse, part of the B&O's sprawling Mount Clare Shops site begun in 1829, the oldest railroad manufacturing complex in the United States.[5]
Mount Clare is considered to be a birthplace of American railroading, as the site of the first regular railroad passenger service in the U.S., beginning on May 22, 1830.[6][7] It was also to this site that the first telegraph message, What hath God wrought? was sent on May 24, 1844, from Washington, D.C., using Samuel F. B. Morse's electric telegraph.[8][9]
Train rides are offered on the mile of track on Wednesday through Sunday from April through December and weekends in January. In 2002, the museum had 160,000 visitors annually.[3]
The museum also features an outdoor G-scale layout, an indoor HO scale model, and a wooden model train for children to climb on. From Thanksgiving through the New Year, local model railroad groups set up large layouts on the roundhouse floor and in select locations on the grounds of the museum. A museum store offers toys, books, DVDs and other railroad-related items.
The museum and station were designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1961.[1] In 2008, the Museum won three awards in Nickelodeon's Parents' Picks Awards in the categories of: Best Museum for Little Kids, Best Indoor Playspace for Little Kids, and Best Indoor Playspace for Big Kids. Television and film actor Michael Gross is the museum's celebrity spokesman.[10]
The museum also hosts an annual Day out with Thomas event every year. Complete with the train's excursion including a non-powered Thomas the Tank Engine replica built by the Strasburg Rail Road.
B & O Railroad Museum - Baltimore, MD
Baltimore, MD - A visit to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The site is home to the first tracks laid for a railroad in the United States. The railroad's name described the ultimate route, connecting the Port of Baltimore with the Ohio River in then Wheeling, Virginia, now West Virginia. The rail service established a trade route from a port city to the nation's interior, allowing the flow of goods and passengers for the young nation. There are many examples of engines, locomotives, cars and all manner of railroad equipment in the museum site which comprises 40 acres. The first track was laid here in 1828.
The cornerstone was laid by Maryland resident Charles Carroll, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. Charles Carroll was a supporter of the creation of the railroad. He is known by how he signed the Declaration of Independence - he signed his name, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, so the King of England would hang the right man in case the revolution didn't succeed. His home in Annapolis is still standing on the grounds of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

A day at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum
Pat_Smat and went to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD and had an adventurous day riding different trains, light rails, metro's and buses. When we arrived their was a Tornado Warning for Washington DC and all trains were stopped untill 8PM. After our tradition of eating at Johnny Rockets at Union Station, the Metro started running again and Pat and I caught the first train we saw back. He went to Shady Grove while I went to Whiele-Reston East and another storm was developing my way. luckily it went south of me when I arrived home. Enjoy!

St. Elizabeth No.4
The St. Elizabeth No. 4 was built in 1950 by one of the country's largest manufacturers of industrial locomotives, H.K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh. The No. 4 was a typical 0-4-0 switch engine, with a saddleback tank draped over the boiler and a compartment to carry coal in the rear. These switch engines were designed for use in areas with severe curvature, such as industrial complexes. The St. Elizabeth No.4 or Little Lizzie was used to pull hoppers of coal from a B&O connection to the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, D.C. The coal carried by Little Lizzie was used to heat the hospital.
When the hospital switched from coal heat to oil heat, the No.4 was transferred to the U.S. Army's training railroad in Fort Eustis, Virginia. Little Lizzie was used in switching practices and was renumbered as USA No. 714. In the 1970s, the training facilities at Fort Eustis closed and the No. 714 was sold to the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia. In 1980, the St. Elizabeth was given to the B&O Railroad Museum where it has been fondly remembered as the last steam locomotive produced by the H.K. Porter Company and one of the last steam locomotives ever produced in the United States.
B&O No. 25 William Mason
Between 1830 and 1855, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) increased its track mileage from 13 to 411 miles. Locomotive designs improved to meet the increasing demands. The most popular passenger locomotive in the 19th century was the American type 4-4-0. In 1856, the B&O ordered two American type locomotives from Mason Machine Works in Taunton, Massachusetts; one of which was the No. 25. William Mason, the founder of the Mason Machine Works, introduced the idea of turning out locomotives of beauty as well as utility.
The Civil War was the first American military conflict in which railroads were used for strategic purposes. The use of railroads revolutionized the transportation of troops and supplies, and affected the outcome on the battlefield. The No. 25 was used extensively during the war to transport Union troops and supplies. B&O President John Garrett understood the financial and political benefits of siding with the Union, despite his personal ties to the South.
The No. 25 was the first B&O locomotive to have a Stephenson link motion valve gear and a round smoke box set on a cylinder saddle. In 1927, the railroad named the locomotive the William Mason to honor its builder. The William Mason follows the general form of the original No. 25; however it has been rebuilt and modified as an exhibition locomotive.
Throughout the years, the William Mason has been featured in many motion pictures, such as The Swan, The Great Locomotive Chase (1956), Raintree County (1957), Wild, Wild West (1998), Tuck Everlasting (2002), and Gods and Generals (2003).
