BALUKHAND Wildlife Sanctuary
It is heartening to see a patch of forest in Puri district preserved and protected by man. This forest on the sprawling Chandrabhaga coast on the Puri-Konark road is entirely man-made. Tended with great care, love and responsibility by man, this forest is home to a wide variety of animals and plants.
The Balukhanda - Konark- tract was declared a sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 in 1984 with the aim of conserving the coastal ecosystem and biodiversity. Spread over an area of 87 square kilometers, this sanctuary has been carved out of reserved and protected forests, the sarlake cut and some government and private land under the Puri Sadar, Gop, Konark and Kakatpur community development blocks in Puri district, stretching from the Banki river mouth in Puri on the west to Keluni river mouth on the east. The Balukhanda sanctuary runs along the coast line of Bay of Bengal over a length of 40 Kms. It is counted among the finest and most enjoyable sanctuaries in the state.

Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful place to visit as a family. The kids love this place. The place is neat and tidy. Very calm and peaceful for picnics. The nature is very beautiful. The whole place and the surroundings are green. Many specious of birds and animals seen here.
Balukhand Konark Wildlife Sanctuary
Recently Cyclone Fani hit several east coast states of India, and did a lot of damage. The following video contains the images of Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary of orissa before and after the impact of cyclone fani. It is clearly visible that the vegetation got completely decimated. Furthermore, more than 4000 spotted deer have also gone missing after the impact of the cyclone. In the coming days, we will be performing a thorough analysis about the feasibility of using remote sensing techniques to optimize rescue resources in such calamities, taking cyclone fani as a case study disaster. The Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located in between the towns of Puri and Konark in the state of Odisha.
The sanctuary includes sandy beaches, coastal dunes, groves of introduced Casuarina trees planted in 1916-17, and cashew plantations.Little of the native flora remains. The sanctuary was designated in 1984.
The sanctuary is home to a herd of Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra). Olive Ridley Sea Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) nest on the beaches

The sanctuary is home to a herd of Blackbuck and Spotted Deer. Other animals found in the sanctuary include monkey, squirrel, jungle cat, hyena, jackal, mongoose and variety of birds and reptiles.
