Mali
Islam was introduced to West Africa in the 11th century and is the predominant religion in much of the region. It is estimated that 90% of Malians are Muslims (mostly Sunnis, about 5% of Christians (about two-thirds of Catholics and one-third of Protestants), and the remaining 5% are adherents of traditional indigenous or animistic beliefs. Malians often wear fluffy and colourful dresses. Malians often participate in traditional festivals, dances and ceremonies. Greeting the people is very important, you should get acquainted with the greetings in French or, better still, in Bambara. Sellers should be treated accordingly, even if you are just buying the bread only. . It is very important to show a general interest in the other person, so ask about family, work, kids, and so on.
Bamako
Bamako is the capital and the largest city of Mali with a population of 3.3 million people. In 2006, it was rated as the fastest-growing city in Africa and the sixth-fastest in the world. Bamako, the capital of Mali, may not have the cultural appeal of Timbuktu or Jenna, but it has a fascinating collection of architectural styles and an elegant location on the banks of the Niger River. It is also the centre of the country's traditional music scene, and Malians of all ethnic groups flock to Bamako's nightclubs to dance at night to the sound of Cora, a lute-like instrument.
Wedding ceremony in traditional Mali style – people are singing the songs, dancing and having traditional food. I saw personally the wedding ceremony was for one week. Every day they have a guest and they are celebrating it. Mali people; they have their own traditions. One traditional I saw is; when a bride will come at Groom home. The big sister of the groom will wash the face, hand and foot of the groom as well as his best friend. Like my friend was the best friend of the groom. He was sitting there and was the part of that ceremony. Dinner will serve only to close relatives - Beans with Beef & rice with mix vegetables and spicy sauce.
Best time to visit:
The best time to visit Mali is from November to February, during the cool and dry season.

Is Mali the place to be in the smartphone market?
Mali is Africa’s fastest growing smartphone market. Trade in mobile phones is bustling in the capital Bamako, home to hundreds upon hundreds of dealers, and the market is a job engine in this crisis-torn country. In Africa as a whole, a lot of people make a lot of money in the mobile telecoms business. The continent, having vaulted over the landline age, has 545 mobile phone owners - that's almost half of Africa's population. They use their devices, not only used to make calls, text or surf the internet, but to transfer money too.

Mali seeks to add value to cotton [Business Africa]
Mali's economy could have raked in some $1.6 billion dollars in 2018. And that's if authorities had industrial processing units to add value to cotton. The West African nation is Africa's top cotton producer, but lack of investments in the sector means local farmers are short-changed.
Mali had a record 700,000 tonnes of cotton crop harvest during its latest season. Thus, the association of African cotton growers is making a passionate appeal to leaders to boost processing of the crop.

Mali - Better Seeds For All
National Seed Service of Mali and local seed Bank helping local farmers to adopt more resilient seed varieties and to decrease their vulnerability to climate variability.
The World Bank's Social Development Department, together with the Agriculture and Rural Development Department, and external partners undertook a work program on Local Institutions and Climate Change to address the importance of strong local institutions and their long-term presence in successful implementation of community-based adaptation strategies.
Supported by the Bank-Netherlands Partnership Program, and the Trust Fund for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (Norway-Finland), series of activities were carried out in partnership with the Bank's regional departments from Africa, Latin America and Middle East regions and the World Bank Institute.
These short videos were prepared in coordination with the World Bank Institute and the local task teams to highlight some of the individual case studies in participating countries. They document some of the challenges of climate risks faced at the local level and show collective local response mechanisms.

Kidal (Tuareg-Berber: ⴾⴸⵍ, Kidal) is a town and commune in the desert region of northern Mali. The town lies 285 km (177 mi) northeast of Gao and is the capital of the Kidal Cercle and the Kidal Region. The commune has an area of about 9,910 km2 (3,830 sq mi) and includes the town of Kidal and 31 other settlements.[2]
On 30 March 2012, Kidal and its military base were captured by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad as part of the Tuareg rebellion for the independence of Azawad. A spokesman for the Malian military junta said To preserve the life of the people of Kidal, the military command decided not to prolong the battle.[3] Gao and Timbuktu were captured within the next 48 hours, and on 6 April, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad declared the independence of Azawad from Mali.[4][5] In the course of the conflict the MNLA lost their control to Islamist militias.[6] On 30 January 2013 French and Malian forces moved into the town to bring it back under government control.[7]
On 14 December 2013, a car bombing in Kidal killed two United Nations peacekeepers.[8]
On 21 May 2014, MNLA forced government troops in Kidal to retreat after heavy fighting, capturing the military base.[9
Guinea: Coffee of Fouta Djallon
After University, some youths took over an abandoned coffee plantation.
Mamadou Bhoye BAH was still at University when this idea came to him. Along with his friends, they created a cooperative, and ventured into potato production. Later, they grew cowpea, maize, and then they started with coffee. Coffee was an interesting investment for them since they have the best quality of Arabica coffee in Fouta Djallon, a highland region in the centre of Guinea. And also, despite the appreciation of coffee on the international market there were many coffee plantations that were abandoned for many years. For Mamadou, it was an opportunity for the youth to take over from the older generation and innovate.
“Today, the older generation cannot work in the place of the youth. It’s the youth who should take up the challenge,” says Mamadou.

Agriculture : Our Fortune,Our Hope: Experiences from Changieni Rasili Mali Facility
Majority of Africa’s population depend on agriculture for their livelihood. However, making the agricultural sector sustainable is crucial for the environment and natural resources. Sustainable agriculture is of great benefit to the smallholder farmers and to the world at large. Our food system isn’t just about high yield agriculture. It is also about local communities growing, preparing, sharing food and engaging in profitable agricultural production while at the same time striking a balance between production and sustainable natural resource management. Supporting the growing number of farmers to produce more food, to access markets, and to build and share helpful information through farmer networks is one way of supporting community initiatives and innovations in sustainable agricultural production.
Act! through the Changieni Rasili Mali Facility (CRM), funded by the Government of Sweden and the Department for International Development/UKaid, has for the last four years been working with local non state actor organizations and grassroots communities to initiate practices that can be used to contribute to food security and increased incomes for rural smallholder farmers whilst taking care of the fragile ecosystem.
The Facility has supported farmers to increase productivity and incomes through not only adoption of appropriate agricultural technologies, good land management practices but more so through value added agricultural practices such as the use of improved seed varieties, organic farming, soil and water management, better processing and storage for reduction of post harvest losses, linkages to markets and access to formal credit facilities.
Note: This documentary is supported by the Government of Sweden (through the Swedish International Development Agency) and the Government of the United Kingdom (through the UKaid). Senegalese rapper Akon to supply 600 Million with electricity through Solar Panels.
Located in Bamako, Mali, the Solar Academy will help African engineers and entrepreneurs develop skills that will enable to them to produce solar power. Experts will be on hand to help the participants with training and equipment, according to a Reuters report.
According to Akon Lighting Africa, the goal of the academy is to teach people how to maintain solar-powered electricity systems and microgrids. Both systems have been growing quickly in rural parts of Africa. In a continent that has 320 days of sun a year, roping in its natural resources will be valuable to the solar-energy efforts.

Economy of Mali
The Economy of Mali is based to a large extent upon agriculture, with a mostly rural population engaged in subsistence agriculture.
Mali is among the ten poorest nations of the world, is one of the 37 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries, and is a major recipient of foreign aid from many sources, including multilateral organizations, and bilateral programs funded by the European Union, France, United States, Canada, Netherlands, and Germany. Before 1991, the former Soviet Union, China and the Warsaw Pact countries had been a major source of economic and military aid.

What do a farm in Mali and UN Peacekeeping have in common?
UN Peacekeeping troops do a lot more than patrol the streets–they also work with the community to implement projects that make a difference. In Mali, that means supporting a local farm that provides employment opportunities and helps stimulate economic growth.
