BANJA LUKA - Bosnia & Herzegovina Travel Guide | Around The World
Banja Luka (Serbian Cyrillic: Бања Лука), or Banjaluka (Serbian Cyrillic: Бањалука), is the largest city and the de facto capital of the Republika Srpska entity and the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the capital Sarajevo. Traditionally, it has been the centre of the Krajina region, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is home of the University of Banja Luka as well as numerous state and entity institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city lies on the River Vrbas and is well known in the countries of the former Yugoslavia for being full of tree-lined avenues, boulevards, gardens and parks. According to the 2013 census, Banja Luka has 199,191 inhabitants.
The history of inhabitation of the area of Banja Luka dates back to ancient times. There is a substantial evidence of the Roman presence in the region during the first few centuries A.D., including an old fort Kastel (Latin: Castra) in the centre of the city. The area of Banja Luka was entirely in the kingdom of Illyria and then a part of the Roman province of Illyricum, which split into provinces of Pannonia and Dalmatia of which Castra became a part. Ancient Illyrian maps call the settlement in Banja Luka's present day location as Ad Ladios, a settlement located on the river Vrbas.
Banja Luka fell to the Ottomans in 1527. It became the seat of the Sanjak of Bosnia some time prior to 1554, until 1580 when the Bosnia Eyalet was established. Bosnian beylerbeys were seated in Banja Luka until 1639. Ferhad Pasha Sokolović, a relative of Grand Vizier Mehmed-pasha Sokolović, had upon his return to Bosnia in 1574, begun the building of over 200 buildings ranging from artisan and sales shops to wheat warehouses, baths and mosques. Among more important commissions were the Ferhadija and Arnaudija mosques during which construction a plumbing infrastructure was laid that served surrounding residential areas. This stimulated the economic and urban development of Banja Luka, which soon became one of the leading commercial and political centres in Bosnia. It was also sanjak centre in Bosna Eyalet.
In 1688, the city was burned down by the Austrian army, but it quickly recovered. Later periodic intrusions by the Austrian army stimulated military developments in Banja Luka, which made it into a strategic military centre. Orthodox churches and monasteries near Banja Luka were built in the 19th century.
Due to its long history, Banja Luka is rich in culture. The Museum of Republika Srpska inherited the Ethnographic Museum established in 1930, and broadened its setting with collections of archeology, history, art history and nature. The Museum of Modern Art of Republika Srpska, also called MSURS, the Museum of Contemporary Art, displays exhibitions of noticed artists, both domestic and worldwide known, such as Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry . Banja Luka is also the home of the National Theatre and National Library, both dating from the first half of the 20th century, and of numerous other theatres. The headquarters of the Archives of Republika Srpska is situated in the building known as Carska kuća or Imperial House, built around 1880. It has been in continuous public use longer than any other structure in Banja Luka.
One of the most famous cultural sites in Banja Luka is the cultural centre of Banski Dvor (Halls of the Ban), built in the 1930s as the residence for the Bans of the Vrbas Banovina.[citation needed] It is a representative building in the very centre of the city housing the National Assembly along with a concert hall, gallery, state television, and a restaurant. Most of the main cultural and political events nowadays take place in the building. The relatively poorly preserved Kastel Fortress is found in the city centre. This mediaeval castle is one of Banja Luka's main attractions. Located on the left bank of the Vrbas river, it gives a specific charm to the city. During the summer, music concerts take place in the fortress.
The natural beauties of the surrounding area guarantee the city of Banja Luka a good position in tourism. Banja Luka has a number of hotels, one of the best being Hotel Cezar Banja Luka. One of the hotels right on the Vrbas river's bank is the Marriott. The city and surrounding area boast a number of popular tourist attractions. Among the most famous are the pools, thermal springs, and spas in the region. Due to its parks and over 10 000 trees Banja Luka was once nicknamed the Green City. The area is popular among nature lovers, while the city centre is attractive to tourists due to its historical structures and many restaurants. Other attractions of Banja Luka are the Banj Hill and a waterfall of the Vrbas river near Krupa. Rafting on the Vrbas river is currently becoming popular among the local tourists. There is fishing, rock climbing and hiking along the canyon of the Vrbas between Banja Luka and Jajce, and there is plenty of accommodation for visitors.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Commemoration held for deceased Hague inmate General Tolimir
A commemoration for the deceased former General of the Army of Republika Srpska Zdravko Tolimir was held at the ‘Banski Dvor’ cultural centre in Banja Luka on Tuesday.
SOT, Milan Torbica, General and Advisor to the Minister of Labour and Veterans Protection of the Republika Srpska (Serbian): General Zdravko Tolimir will outlive them all. They will be insignificant, small and forgotten, and our general will become a legend, because he was a legend during his lifetime.
SOT, Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska (Serbian): I went to the Hague tribunal several times, and testified in the trial of Biljana Plavsic, Radovan Karadzic, Radoslav Brdjanin, and of course, the last time, General Ratko Mladic, and I could see, especially the last time, how it all looks. If you are a witness of the defence or prosecution, and if you do not do what is expected of you then they interrupt you and impose their views.
SOT, Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska (Serbian): Today you have the court and prosecution in Bosnia and Herzegovina who have a list of 6,500 Serbs, members of the Army of Republika Srpska, whom they are planning to arrest in the near future.
SOT, Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska (Serbian): Naser Oric, who was indicted for war crimes, stands trial and [yet] walks around Sarajevo. This type of justice is not needed for anyone, and Serbs need to open their eyes; and to ensure that the suffering and effort of Tolimir and many others is not in vain, we must oppose it.
SOT, Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska (Serbian): We need such people today. Let the general have eternal glory and praise, as well as many others who have given their all for Republika Srpska, and given above that which was expected of them. Despite the weather and the storms which placed them in these positions, they respond to those challenges in a way that showed they are the best sons of the nation. Thank you.

Banja Luka 2015 - Dan osoba sa Daun sindromom / International Day of Persons With Down Syndrome

International Day of Persons With Down Syndrome Celebrated in Banja Luka
On 21 May 2015 the Children's education centre „Svjetlice“ marked in a spectacular way the International Day of Persons With Down Syndrome through the manifestation Window To Our World in the Cultural Centre Banski dvor in Banja Luka.
Aside from children with Down syndrome, other children with disabilities and other children of their age that have no disabilities took active part in this manifestation.
The children danced, sang, recited and played instruments.
Like the cherry on this sweet children's cake the hymn earmarked for persons with Down syndrome and other persons with disabilities named „Ljubav može sve/Love can do everything“, composed by Mladen Matović from Banja Luka, composer, conductor and music educator, was played for the first time.
On this day people from all around the world give their support in different ways to persons with Down syndrome and they are so sending the message that everyone is equal and has right to a fair chance.
We from Hypo Alpe-Adria-Bank a.d. Banja Luka decided to give our support in the form of donating money for all the logistical and organizational expenses of organising the manifestation Window To Our World.
This video is an additional reminder that we have to support the children and youth with disabilities and disabled persons during the whole year, and not only on a certain day.

Republic of Srpska was proclaimed one of the entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina on 9th Jan 1992, by Dayton Peace Agreement. Republic of Srpska has its borders with Serbia, Monte Negro and Republic of Croatia and the entity of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The total length of Republic of Srpska border is cca 2,170 km, out of which 1,080 km is related to the border with Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. If Republic of Srpska, with all its territory, would have a form of a circle, the total length of its borders would be only 561 km.
The territory of Republic of Srpska is situated between 42°°33´ and 45°°16´ of north latitude, and 16°°11´ and 19°°37´ of east longitude. It comprises northern and eastern part of geographical space of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The mountains of our Republic are characterized by exceptional beauty and uniqueness. Vast forest complexes, rich flora and fauna and well preserved nature make basis for development of several types of tourism. The best indicator to that is the fact that in some of them in 1984, competitions as a part of the Winter Olympic Games took place. Huge variety of tourist offerings, broad views and hospitability of the local inhabitants provide ideal peace oasis for holiday and recreation.
While walking through our mountains, one can feel the spirit of the century long turmoil, temporality of things, their strength and power, beauty and attractiveness that makes us so small and temporary, but still very proud.
The biggest gem among the mountain centres is the Olympic beauty of Jahorina with its variety to offer. Alpine skiing, ski running, sledging, skating, night skiing, walking and rich night life in numerous interesting restaurants, pubs, cafés makes it one of the European jet-set ski centres. If you walk along the Olympic paths, there are more than 20 km of the Alpine skiing paths, connected with four modern ski chairs, and four ski lifts, in the total capacity of 8,000 skiers per hour, modern ski-teaching school, ski-service and ski-rental.
Very close to the ski paths, there are grill houses with terraces and huge selection of grilled dishes, warm and cold beverages.
Jahorina offers the other forms of leisure tourism such as paragliding, mountain tours, walking treks, cycling through forests dominated by fir-trees, pine-trees and hornbeams.
Republic of Srpska is open and friendly for all those whose roads take them to the Balkans, a country with a long history, variety of culture, genuine nature and hospitable hosts.
As you walk along the roads of history, the monastery gates of the gems of Krayna open to you -- Gomionica; Mostanica - among those the oldest one; the monastery of St. Ilija, Klisna, the century long places of worship Liplje and Stuplje as ones of the most important in the history of the orthodox people from Krayina region. On the other side of our Srpska, a proud Herzegovina keeps very famous monasteries of Tvrdos located on the rocks above the rich Trebinje field, according to the legend, founded by the Emperor Constantine himself in the 4th century, monastery of Dobricevo, Duzi, Petropavlov and Gracanica built as a result of the last wish of the most famous Serb poet Jovan Ducic. The precious area of Podrinje is adorned with monasteries of Papraca, Lovnica, Sase, Tavna and Dobrun that are decorated with the picturesque area and gorge of the Rzav river, as well as the cave where a vow to God was offered and the medieval town of Dobrun. There are very famous and interesting wooden churches in the area of Slatina and Krupa and many more that keep the spirit of the orthodox people of this region. The variety of culture and religion in Republic of Srpska is confirmed by catholic convents and other religious buildings out of which we emphasise the very famous convent of Trapisti -- Marija Zvijezda, near Banja Luka; The Holy Heart of Jesus in Doboj; Selimija mosque also in Doboj, Jewish house Bait Shalom in Doboj, St. Clement's church, catholic cathedral from the 19th century, Osman-Pasha's mosque in Trebinje and many more incorporated in regions throughout Republic of Srpska. The important material for study of medieval culture in the territory of current Republic of Srpska are the tomb stones called -- stecci, which major finding is in the southern parts of our Republic
