Fun Free Things To Do In Acadia Maine and Bar Harbor
Welcome to Acadia Maine and Bar Harbor. Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and surrounding villages, is a stunning national treasure on the coast of Maine. We went for a family reunion and left with amazing memories.
I am avid cyclist so this was by far my favorite part of the trip. Bike the trails in Acadia National Park. Although bikes are not allowed on hiking trails, there is plenty of room for adventure, from the 27-mile Park Loop Road to the 45 miles of carriage roads that are available to cyclists. We went on carriage roads and loved it. We rented our bikes from a local shop in town. We were able to get kids bikes and trailers to bring the little ones along.
Visit the sights at Bar Harbor. Stroll the shops. Get some famous moon pie. Relax in one of there many parks. We personally loved some artisan chocolate made in town with some fresh Maine Blueberries.
Drive up Cadillac Mountain. Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, at 1,530 feet, is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. It gives you a gorgeous view of the shoreline and surrounding areas. We had a large picnic there with our big bunch.
Check out Thunder Hole. Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days, like the one we went, you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole.
Eat lobster that can be delivered straight to your campsite. You heard me right, lobster delivered to your campsite. Best experience ever!

Fast Bike Ride Down Cadillac Mountain - Acadia National Park
Rode my bike down from the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor Maine. There is a slight uphill at the beginning, then the full-on downhill starts ate about 1:08. I may have been exceeding the speed limit slightly. This was on my homemade cyclocross/gravel bike with CX tires. I would have loved to have had my road bike with race tires. Maybe next time. Not knowing the corners, I actually took it relatively easy, not wanting to fly off the side of the mountain. The video was shot with my Sony point and shoot camera taped to the handlebars with electrical tape. LOL!
BTW, I know my top speed and I am taking the 5th.
FYI, I did this at 8:30am. They recommend cyclists who want to ride the mountain come early in the morning or later in the day when car traffic is light.

Bar Harbor Trip 2016
Anniversary trip to Bar Harbor, Maine. Climbing, hiking, camping in Acadia National Park. Great time!
Meet Schoodic Woods: The Newest Addition to Acadia National Park
When most park visitors think of Acadia National Park, images of exploring Mount Desert Island come to mind. While the vast majority of the park’s lands are located on this scenic island, the Schoodic Woods section of the park, with its newly renovated campgrounds, stunning 10k carriage road loop, and 13k of bike paths, offers a peaceful, quiet, and less touristy experience then mainland Acadia. The park’s many islands, home to much of Maine’s unique and diverse wildlife, are able to be seen from Schoodic Point, one of the most scenic spots on the peninsula. Easily accessed via Area Cove Road, watching a sunset from Schoodic point is an experience you do not want to miss.
Thanks, in-part to a donation of 1,400 acres to the National Park Service in Acadia last year, this wondrous addition has allowed the park to grow in a time where visitation is at an all-time low; and not slowing down.
There are an abundance of ways to explore the Schoodic Woods section of the park. Whether on foot, bike, car, or even kayak, this area is accessible to every type of explorer. Keep in mind that the greater portion of the Loop Road is one way to vehicles and the maximum speed limit throughout Acadia National Park is 35 miles per hour, so remember to be careful and respectful of other park visitors. Bicyclists are also subject to the one-way road signs, but worry not if you find yourself out of steam and stranded, in need of a lift back. The park’s many explorer busses are equipped with bike racks and will be happy to give you a free lift to wherever you’re looking to go.
The Schoodic campground is located just over a mile south of winter harbor and is no more than an hour from Bar Harbor, so don’t worry about missing out on all your favorite shops and restaurants; they’re not going anywhere! Feel free to enjoy the Schoodic Peninsula’s impossible to overstate views of forested islands, historic lighthouses, and native seabirds. The Schoodic area also offers a selection of easy and moderate trails, perfect for the casual explorer. Sorry thrill seekers, the Schoodic trails are unlikely to push you to your limit. And as always, the park is pet friendly, so don’t forget to bring your four-legged member of the family along for the trip!

Acadia National Park is a 47,000-acre Atlantic coast recreation area primarily on Maine's Mount Desert Island. Its landscape is marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast. Among the wildlife are moose, bear, whales and seabirds. The bayside town of Bar Harbor, with restaurants and shops, is a popular gateway.
