The Barbican: A Middle Class Council Estate
The Barbican is one of the most remarkable housing estates in the world. Designed in the mid 20th century by British firm, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and commissioned by the local authority, it is a unique chapter in the story of state-led architecture with much to teach us today.
Written and presented by Phineas Harper. A co-production between The Architectural Review and the Architecture Foundation.
ABOUT THE ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION
For over 20 years, the Architecture Foundation has brought together professionals from across the built environment to discuss and act on issues related to design and the built environment. With a renewed focus on the city and the critical intersection of architecture and politics, the Architecture Foundation works to effect meaningful change on policy and practice.

A Walk Through the City of London from Barbican to London Bridge, England - 14th June, 2014
This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. It highlights the varied architecture of the city including the 1960s brutalist buildings of the Barbican Estate, to the high-tech glass skyscrapers and historic gothic, regency and classic buildings, monuments and statues. Part of the film has been made on the high level walkways which stem from the Barbican estate, allowing an elevated view of the surroundings. From London Walls the film goes to street level. If you are visiting London and would like to see the sights for yourself, the best way is to walk, rather than take public transport. This walk is one I would definitely recommend.
In the film, the following sights, streets and features are highlighted: Beech Street Tunnel, Cromwell Place, Cromwell Tower, The Barbican Centre, Lakeside Terrace, Gilbert House, Barbican Highwalks, Silk Street, Gilbert Bridge, City of London School for Girls, Lauderdale Place, Defoe House, Willoughby House, Andrewes House, Moor House, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Andrewes Highwalk, Speed House, St. Giles Cripplegate, Tower 42, The Leadenhall Building (Cheesegrater), The Shard, The Gherkin, 1 Coleman Street, 40 Basinghall Street, City Place House, 125 London Wall, Alban Highwalk, Wood Street, 88 Wood Street, London Wall, City of London Police Headquarters, The Tower of St. Alban's, Gresham Street, St. Lawrence Jewry Church, Guildhall Library, London Guildhall, Guildhall Art Gallery, Guildhall Buildings, Mayor's & City of London Court, Basinghall Street, Bank of China, Bank of England, Mansion House, Lombard Street, Royal Exchange, Royal Fusiliers' War Memorial, J.H. Greathead statue, Cornhill, St. Michael's Church, Leadenhall Street, Gracechurch Street, Bishopgate Street, St. Andrew Undershaft Church, Whittington Avenue, Leadenhall Market, The Walkie Talkie, Fenchurch Street, Monument to the Great Fire of London (The Monument), Eastcheap, St. Magnus the Martyr Church, Adelaide House, Lower Thames Street (A3211), Fishmongers' Hall, Tower Bridge, The River Thames, HMS Belfast, 1 London Bridge, London Bridge (A3) and Southwark Needle.

Barbican Estate and Centre, London 4k July 2019
Walking through the Barbican Estate and Barbican Centre, London 4k
The Barbican Estate is a residential estate that was built during the 1960s and the 1980s within the City of London in Central London, in an area once devastated by World War II bombings and today densely populated by financial institutions. It contains, or is adjacent to, the Barbican Arts Centre, the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Barbican public library, the City of London School for Girls and a YMCA (now closed), forming the Barbican Complex. The Barbican Complex is a prominent example of British brutalist architecture and is Grade II listed as a whole with the exception of the former Milton Court. Milton Court, which once contained a fire station, medical facilities, and some flats, was demolished to allow the construction of a new apartment tower named The Heron, which also contains additional facilities for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre in the Barbican Estate of the City of London and the largest of its kind in Europe. The Centre hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and art exhibitions. It also houses a library, three restaurants, and a conservatory. The Barbican Centre is member of the Global Cultural Districts Network.

The Barbican | A City Within A City (Documentary)
A film taking an intimate 'inside' view on life in one of the most iconic building schemes of the 20th Century. Told from the standpoint of two residents, one an architect who formed part of the original design team and the other an artisan model-maker with a life-long obsession with this masterpiece of brutalism. This was commissioned with Conran + Partners to run in the visitor centre for their new '4th tower' development at The Barbican and was shot with exclusive access to the estate and at Terence Conran's apartment at the Conran building in Shad Thames.

Designing 007 - 50 Years Of Bond Style
6 Jul -- 5 Sep 2012
The Barbican marks the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, from 1962's Dr No to this year's Skyfall, with a unique exhibition showcasing the inside story of the design and style of the world's most influential and iconic movie brand.
In collaboration with EON Productions and with unprecedented access to their archives, Designing 007 will be a multi-sensory experience, immersing audiences in the creation and development of Bond style over its auspicious 50 year history.
It will explore the craft behind the screen icons, the secret service and villains, tailoring and costumes, set and production design, automobiles, gadgets and special effects, graphic design and motion graphics, exotic locations, stunts and props.
Highlights include gadgets and weapons made for Bond and his notorious adversaries by special effects experts John Stears and Chris Corbould, along with artwork for sets and storyboards by production designers Sir Ken Adam, Peter Lamont and Syd Cain, and costume designs by Bumble Dawson, Donfeld, Julie Harris, Lindy Hemming, Ronald Patterson, Emma Porteous, and Jany Temime.
On display too will be lavish screen finery by Hollywood costume designers and major fashion names including Giorgio Armani, Brioni, Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford, Hubert de Givenchy, Gucci's Frida Giannini, Douglas Hayward, Rifat Ozbek, Jenny Packham, Miuccia Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Anthony Sinclair, Philip Treacy, Emanuel Ungaro and Donatella Versace.
Designing 007 will transform the Barbican, taking the audience on a journey - a 'making of' and presentation of Bond style over 50 years.
The exhibition is designed by Ab Rogers and curated by the Barbican, with guest-curation by fashion historian Bronwyn Cosgrave and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming.

Strolling Around The City of London's Barbican and London Wall
This week I decided to explore the City of London some more, again starting from Liverpool Street station. The City district is actually quite small - it is known as 'The Square Mile' although my guess is it is a bit bigger than that in fact, but maybe not by much. Anyway, today I walk via Finsbury Circus to the Barbican Centre, a home for the arts and a lot of residents. I then pass by the Museum of London and walk back to Liverpool Street station via London Wall, taking a look at some of the Roman and Medieval ruins along the way.
ABOUT ALPHATUCANA
This channel is about 'waking up' from our matrix-induced slumber, and about leaving the World a better place than we found it. For most of us, our powers and motivation are strictly limited. We are fundamentally alone in a vast and mysterious Universe, but in the struggle to survive, to 'succeed', or to just get by, we sometimes forget the bigger picture, and we sometimes forget to just relax for a while and remember what an amazing world this is. There is plenty to look at: science, Nature, society... And there are plenty of games to help us get away from it all... So on this channel, I vlog about science, Nature, enlightenment, current affairs and much else besides, I upload sightseeing videos showing London, England, or my holidays elsewhere, and I upload game-play videos. So why not join in for a while and see what you think?
POSTING SCHEDULE
This depends in part on whether I have had time to record videos in between going to work and living the rest of my life! Usually it runs like this:
- Most weekends: a vlog or sightseeing video.
- Gameplay videos: pretty random - typically at midday on weekdays, but not all the time.
- If I have something extra to post it usually appears at some random time :) I may livestream occasionally too.
