Barnegat Lighthouse ~ Barnegat NJ ~ Long Beach Island
The beloved Barnegat Lighthouse is shining again, as it was illuminated on January 1, 2009 - exactly 150 years to the day that it was originally lit in 1859. Thanks to the Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse, the nonprofit group dedicated to preserving and promoting the park, funds were raised to purchase a new Coast Guard-approved lens. The new light creates a single beam that can be visible for up to 22 nautical miles. In 1927, the original lens was removed, and was replaced by a lightship anchored off the coast of Barnegat light. The original lens is still on display down the road at the Barnegat Lighthouse Historical Society's Museum.
A panoramic view of Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island awaits visitors at the top of Barnegat Lighthouse. The lighthouse is open daily from 10 AM to 4:30 PM (weather permitting) from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There is a $3 fee per person to enter the lighthouse from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Children ages 6 to 11 are $1 and children ages 5 and under are free and must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors can also catch the views from the top without climbing the 217 steps thanks to four cameras that transmit live images of the view to a display in the adjacent Interpretive Center.
Barnegat Lighthouse Shines Again
On the occasion of its 150 year anniversary Barnegat Lighthouse in Barnegat Light NJ has been relighted with a new state of the art lens that is viewable for 20 miles out to sea. The original light was first activated on Jan 1, 1859, but was decommissioned in 1927. Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park collected donations of $20,000 to supply the new light to NJ's most visited lighthouse. It was a cold but exciting evening in the little town of Barnegat Light NJ which hosted an estimated 6,000 people for the event.

Venturi Beach House Move, Barnegat Light, NJ to Glen Cove, NY
This house was moved in early 2008 by Wolfe House Movers to save it from demolition. Designed by renowned architect Robert Venturi, it is an icon studied by architectural students from all over. The house was moved to the water's edge in Barnegat Light, NJ, loaded onto a barge and made the 20 hr trip to Glen Cove, NY. Through the New York Harbor, past Lady Liberty and under the Brooklyn Bridge, the house was towed to its new location. The house now sits as a guest house for a house also designed by Mr. Venturi.

Lighthouse Challenge of NJ
Lighthouses and selected museums throughout the state will host the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ weekend on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 19, 2015. Take the challenge, tour the state and visit each participating lighthouse over the weekend to help raise funds for continued lighthouse preservation.
These majestic beacons have played an important role in New Jersey’s history, guarding mariners and protecting our coasts for three centuries. Lighthouses serve as a reminder of American ingenuity while honoring the values of safety and heroism. Visit the lighthouses and museums on the Challenge for an opportunity to step back in time and learn more about our state and nation’s maritime history.
Begin the Challenge at any of the 11 participating New Jersey land-based lighthouses, one museum and two life-saving stations, and purchase a souvenir ($1), which will be proof of your visit at each lighthouse and commemorate your participation in the event. Hours of operation for each lighthouse can be found at participating lighthouse and museum websites and at lhchallengenj.org, njlhs.org, and visitnj.org. You can also find the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ on Facebook where you can communicate with other lighthouse fans. During the weekend, children 11 and under climb free with an adult.
