East Dean's Serene Village Green

Last year I spent two weeks traveling across South England, researching my Rick Steves England guidebook. At the same time, I collected lots of great ideas for this month’s TV shoot. For example, I fell in love with a tiny hamlet called East Dean, with a classic medieval village green and a darling little pub that rents rooms. So this year I'm back with my TV crew.

In this clip, we’re just setting up to record a bunch of promos for public television stations. (With me are producer Simon Griffith and cameraman Karel Bauer. I’m thankful to have such a talented and hardworking crew. For a behind-the-scenes look at how we make our show, you can join the three of us in Milan for our “The Making of Rick Steves' Europe” special.)

In our scripts, I always find an informative way to slip in what month we’re traveling in. For this show, I’ll walk across this fine green and say to the camera, “We’re here in August. In Britain, I prefer traveling in peak season — long days, the best possible weather, enough people out and about to keep things lively...and there are rarely any tourist crowds.”

We’re here in the most crowded months in one of England’s favorite tourist regions. And, while there are plenty of tourists, I’m impressed by how few American travelers we’ve seen. In fact, in the last ten days of travel across South England, I’ve probably seen only 20 or 30 Americans. (I think they’re all in London, Bath, York, and Edinburgh.)

Hammersmith, Old Chiswick, Barnes Bridge Walk -1 Minute Walks: London

This is a delightful walk around one of the nicest stretches of the Thames. Landmarks Include: Hammersmith Riverside & Bridge, The Dove, Kelmscott House, Fullers Griffin Brewery, Old Chiswick, Dukes Meadows, Barnes Bridge, The Bull’s Head, The Leg of Mutton Nature Reserve.

Start and end at Hammersmith Tube, District, Circle, Piccadilly, Hammersmith & City Lines. (Green, Yellow, Dark Blue, Pink - On the tube map).

Approximately 5 Miles / 8 Km. Fast walk – 1hour 30 minutes but allow 2 hours + to take in the sights.


Directions & Information

Hammersmith Tube Station - A & J
At Hammersmith Station take any exit and look for the crossing to St Paul’s Church on Hammersmith Bridge Road. Head for Hammersmith Bridge - at the bridge walk down to the Thames Path. Then turn right under the bridge heading West

Hammersmith Riverside & Bridge - B
This part of the Thames is tidal. At high tide, the water comes right up the embankment wall. There is around 5 metres or a 16-foot difference in depth between tides. Hammersmith Bridge was built in 1887. It’s 700 feet (210 m) long and 43 feet (13 m) wide.

The Thames Path is home to some famous rowing clubs and some very popular pubs. The Blue Anchor has been serving pints since 1792.

Walk past the houseboats and Furnivall Gardens and into a small alley -Upper Mall.

The Dove - C
The Dove is one of London’s most famous pubs – in the 1670’s King Charles II wooed his mistress Nell Gwynn here. Rule Britannia was composed here and one of its bars is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest in the world.

Exit and turn left

Kelmscott House
Kelmscott House was the home of Victorian textile designer, William Morris. Morris is famous for tapestries, wallpaper, fabrics and stained glass windows. The museum in the coach house is open Thursday and Saturday afternoons. Check the website for details

Continue past the pubs and Georgian houses until you get to Fullers Brewery on Chiswick Mall.

Fullers Griffin Brewery - D
Fullers have been brewing great beer at the Griffin Brewery Chiswick for more than a century. The Griffin Brewery tour is highly recommended. The numbers are limited so booking in advance is essential. Check the website for more information

Rejoin Chiswick Mall and turn right and admire some more beautiful houses.

Old Chiswick - E
At the end of Chiswick Mall turn right onto Church St. This is the oldest part of Chiswick village, which dates back to before 1100 AD. The currant St Nicholas Church was built in 1882.

Return to the Thames Path and turn right along the river.

Dukes Meadows - F
Dukes Meadows is a very popular park for families. There are playing fields and children’s playgrounds on the right hand side of the park.



Barnes Bridge - G
Barnes Bridge is a good spot to look at the river and the picturesque Barnes Terrace.

At the bottom of Barnes Bridge cross the road and turn left heading for the Hammersmith. Barnes Terrace has some delightful old houses. A blue plaque shows one of them was the home of The Planets Suite composer Gustav Holst. Head for the river, cross the road at the crossing and turn right to Hammersmith

The Bull’s Head Pub - H
This pub is a famous Jazz venue. Mick Jagger has been known to make 'surprise' guest appearances. See the website for details.

Carry on the path and through the amusingly named Small Profit Dock Garden. Historically this part of the Thames was full of barges taking local fruit and vegetables into central London. Times have changed.

When the Garden narrows down to the Thames Towpath keep left and look out for the entrance to The Leg of Mutton Nature Reserve (I). This free reserve is a real gem packed with wildlife; parakeets, Egyptian Geese, Woodpeckers, Kestrels and lots of Herons. At the end of the reservoir take the exit and rejoin the towpath, turn right towards Hammersmith. When you cross the bridge stay on the left side and you will see a plaque on the handrail honouring the bravery of a South African Royal Air Force Lieutenant, Charles Campbell Wood. Around midnight on 27 December 1919, the Lieutenant dived from the bridge into the Thames to rescue a drowning woman. Although Wood saved her life, unfortunately he died shortly afterwards from tetanus as a consequence of his injuries.

Return up Hammersmith Bridge Road to Hammersmith Tube.

Hammersmith is well known for its large shops including: TK Max, H&M, Primark and M&S.

Barnes Common is common land in the south east of Barnes, London, England, adjoining Putney Lower Common to the east and bounded to the south by the Upper Richmond Road. Along with Barnes Green, it is one of the largest areas of common land in London with 49.55 hectares (122.4 acres) of protected commons. It is also a Local Nature Reserve. Its facilities include a full-size football pitch and a nature trail.The Common is made up of mixed broadleaf woodland, scrubland and acid grassland and is generally flat. It is owned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral, acting through the Church Commissioners, and managed by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, advised and assisted by the Friends of Barnes Common.

Non-Main Lines around Ealing London Borough.

We start at West Ealing Footbridge (Jacob's Ladder to the locals) on 02/12/2017, 165122 with a West Ealing service comes around the bend from Drayton Green, then 66108 with the 11.55 Park Royal Marcon to Hither Green Down Recp.
Then same location on 30/11/2017 with the 08.38 Bow East (Db Cargo) to Calvert hauled by 66182 as it runs onto the Greenford Loop Line.
Then we are at Drayton Green on 02/12/2016 for a few shots, first is The 12.00 to Greenford being passed by 66134 with 6Z58, the 10.06 Calvert to Bow Depot.
That is followed by 66093 with the 08.55 Cricklewood R.T.S. to Calvert.
165119 arrives and departs for Greenford.
Then an HST is followed by 59202 out of the tunnel with the 11.04 Oxford Banbury Road Sidings to Acton T.C.
Then on 24/10/2016 165126 arrives for Greenford and so releases the waiting 66080 with the Bicester to Didcot T.C (notice how quick the points are reset for the Hanwell direction behind the Greenford service). We watch 66080 and it's train disappear around the right hand fork towards Hanwell etc.
Next we watch 66158 with the 11.10 Bicester C.O.D. to Didcot T.C. leave the Greenford Loop at Hanwell on 17/10/2016.
On to Castle Bar Park (30/10/2017), with 165129 arriving and departing for Greenford, then a Long shot from the footbridge on 09/11/2017 at Castle Bar Park as 66122 comes off the spur from Greenford East Junction to join the Greenford loop, the train then crawls along and eventually passes below us with the 12.05 Park Royal Marcon to Angerstein Wharf (Tarmac). Back to 30/10/2017 for 66087 on the 13.03 Southall T.C. to Northolt Sidings.
Now we move on to South Greenford on 22/12/2016 as 56312 passes on 6Z58 - the 10.06 Calvert to Cricklewood Nth End Gbf, Hull Trains unit (180113) using the branch to turn, 66126 with the 12.05 Park Royal to Angerstein Wharf (Tarmac). Then it is 165136 Northbound with 2G26 1157 West Ealing to Greenford on 02/11/2017 followed on the same day by 66138 on the 6Z48 1006 Calvert to Wembley Eur Frt Ops Cntre. then we have DRS 57301 'Goliath' running as the 1300 Old Oak Common H.S.T.D. to Willesden Brent Drs. on the same day again.
From down in the Fields near South Greenford station on 16/11/2017 we watch what looks like 66108 on the 12.08 Park Marcon to Hither Green Down Recp and 66144 with the 10.06 Calvert to Wembley Euro Freight Ops Centre.
Next to Park Royal first on 13/10/2016 as 2M29, the 11.36 London Paddington to West Ruislip Parliamentary Train (a Chiltern Railways service) passes. Next to 09/09/2017 as 66076 propells a few wagons while making up it's train. The rest of the Park Royal scene is from 13/4/2017 and shows 66077 shunting and departing Park Royal for Hither Green Down Reception.
Then to Monday 10/4/2017 at Bollo Lane Level Crossings South Acton, A yellow track machine as the 08.10 Holbeck Loco Sidings to Ashford Up Sidings (shown on RTT as Diesel locomotive, trailing load 715 Tons), 66735 with 6M79, the 11.56 Angerstein Wharf Gbrf to Bardon Hill Gbrf, Bollo Lane South Acton, 66183 with the 14.33 Churchyard Sdgs Tarmac to Angerstein Wharf (Tarmac), Bollo Lane South Acton, 73964 TnT with 73961 on the 11.15 Derby R.T.C.(Network Rail) to Eastleigh Arlington (Zg).
Final section is by the Hanwell Lock flight on the Grand Union Canal on 09/10/2017.
The former GWR Branch from Southall to Brentford still looks rural in places.
