Barnston Island is an unincorporated island located in the Greater Vancouver metropolitan area of British Columbia, Canada. Most of the island is part of the Greater Vancouver Electoral Area A; the remainder is Barnston Island Indian Reserve No. 3, which is outside Electoral Area A limits and is under the governance of the Katzie First Nation, headquartered across the river at their main reserve in Pitt Meadows. Although the island is unincorporated and not officially part of any municipality, mailing addresses on the island use Surrey as the city name.

This is a quick trip around Barnston Island, which is located on the Fraser River between Surrey and Pitt Meadows on the westcoast of Canada in British Columbia. To access it you need to take a 5 minute ferry trip from 104th avenue in Surrey. This is a great place for a bike trip or a walk around the island. If not stopping it will take approx 2 hours for the complete walk. There is a small park on the northwestern end of the island where you can have a picnic/lunch. As there is no place to buy any provisions (e.g. water) you must pack in everything that you require. Best to start your trip once you leave the ferry is by going right, that way once you reach the park you can have a well deserved break.

Here’s an easy ride that has a bonus of a ferry ride! It’s really a barge pushed by a tugboat, so that makes it all the better. Start at Surrey Bend Park and explore the trails, then bike onto the ferry and around Barnston Island. The road is flat and paved, there are views of the river and farms, and it’s especially fun in the fall during cranberry harvest. Bring a picnic!

Biking Around Barnston Island - Part 1
On Sunday afternoon after church, on July 18th, a group of friends and I went biking around Barnston Island. There's a ferry at the east end of 104th Ave. in Surrey, BC that takes you over to the island, and it's about a 1-hour bike ride all the way around. We were short 2 bikes because of flat tires, but that didn't stop us... it just slowed us down a little bit. This is the first half of the adventure...
