Insight: Ballet glossary - grand battement
Romany Pajdak, Royal Ballet First Artist, demonstrates grand battement.
Batterie/Battement: Movements in which the legs and feet 'beat' together quickly, usually as part of a jump. The may be performed as part of a jetés, entrechats trois, quatre, cinq, changements, grand jeté, etc. The difference between grande batterie and petite batterie [ lit. 'big' and 'small' batterie] depends upon the amount of elevation the dancer needs to jump to perform the 'beating'.
i) Petits battements / battements tendus: extensions of the leg in which the working foot does not leave the ground, used to practise stretching the foot to a fully pointed position
ii) Grands battements: high extensions of the whole leg, which is raised into the air and brought down again while keeping the rest of the body still.

Les 30 ans du bâtiment de Nanterre, lieu d’art en mouvement dessiné et construit par l’architecte Christian de Portzamparc, ont été fêtés les 20 et 21 octobre alors qu’approchent les 40 ans des Démonstrations en décembre prochain. Ce rendez-vous annuel permet à Elisabeth Platel, Directrice de l’École de danse, de revenir sur une vie de scolarité pas tout à fait comme les autres.

Celebrate a double premier at the Leipzig Opera on November 14, 2005. Riccardo Chailly directs Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” for the first time in his function as General Music Director of the Leipzig Opera. “Un Ballo in Maschera” is as exciting as a thriller, but with a passion that can only be experienced in a Verdi opera. It stands to reason that only a man of equal passion would have the ability of bringing this spectacle to the stage adequately.
The Italian film director Ermanno Olmi born in Bergamo in 1931 is an exception in Italiancinema. His Films (The Legend of the Holy Drinker, The Tree of Wooden Clogs) have the effect of a cinematic revelation in that they contain a profound beauty rarely seen in contemporary film. The stage design is being created by the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodore. One can only wait for the first collaboration of these three Italian artists in Leipzig!
