Outer Banks North Carolina Maneo Welcome Center Tour
The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.

OBX Beach Flight
on my most recent trip to the outer banks, my family took an air tour. this is a part of the tour. I was limited to the 11ish minutes on youtube so this isn't all of it. I also had times when the camera was shaking quite a bit because of the combination of the zoom and the plane shaking.
if you happen to be at the outer banks and want a truly memorable experience, check out barrier island aviation
and if you are searching out some royalty free music to use on youtube, check out Kevin Macleod at he has a lot of music in many different genres to choose from.

Storm Surge & Erosion in Outer Banks From Maria
(27 Sep 2017) Maria regained strength and became a hurricane again Wednesday, pushing water over both sides of North Carolina's Outer Banks and taking its time to slowly turn away from the U.S. Atlantic coast.
No injuries have been reported, but the surge of ocean water washed over eroded beaches, flooding properties and state Highway 12, the only road through the narrow barrier islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke.
No ferries were moving, cutting off access to Ocracoke, and with the highway flooded at high tide, any travel on Hatteras remains hazardous, Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said in an email. He said the worst problems were on Hatteras Island, where more than 10,000 visitors left under an evacuation order, but hundreds of local residents were allowed to stay.
The National Hurricane Center said an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft measured Maria's top sustained winds at near 75 mph (120 kmh), with higher gusts. Its center was about 165 miles (265 kilometers) off Cape Hatteras at 11 a.m.
While Maria's most punishing hurricane-force winds remained offshore, tropical storm-force winds extended for as much as 230 miles (370 kilometers) from the center, churning up the surf on both sides of the islands. The hurricane's forward speed is just 6 mph (9 kph), so the storm was lingering before swinging out to sea.
On Hatteras, a fine rain fell Wednesday, with patches of blue sky occasionally showing through. Police set up a check point to block all traffic except for residents and reporters. As the winds picked up, waves crashed up to and beyond ocean-front homes between the communities of Rodanthe and Avon, where the water has washed under waterfront homes and onto side streets since Tuesday at high tide.

Walking on the beach on Roanoke Island, North Carolina
The beach is a great place to walk and think and enjoy the beauty of the ocean. I was thinking about the Lost Colony that had disappeared mysteriously hundreds of years ago from this area. They settled the area...and then were just gone. But the island remains and the Atlantic Ocean and other people. Life goes on...
Jere, Adam and Matthew on an Outer Banks flight with Coastal Helicopters!
On a beautiful clear day, Jere, Adam, Matthew and crew look us up for a beach flight over the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Departing from Manteo Airport, they head south first, flying over Wanchese and the private islands in the sound to the Oregon Inlet Bridge, then head north along the ocean past the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Jockey's Ridge State Park and the Wright Brothers National Monument. They fly back along the ocean, passing over the Triangle wrecks before heading back across the sound to Roanoke Island. Thanks for flying with us, we sure enjoyed the family!

ON SATURDAY HURRICANE IRENE CHARGED THROUGH NORTH CAROLINA''S OUTER BANKS AS A STRONG CATEGORY 1
BLOWING IN WINDS OF OVER 100 MILES PER HOUR AT TIMES
{VOICE-OVER]
SHE STORMED FOR NEARLY 24 HOURS HERE WITH RELENTLESS AMBITION
POWER MANAGED TO STAY ON IN UNTIL EARLY SUNDAY MORNING AS PERSISTENT WINDS AND RAIN FINALLY WON THE BATTLE
AT DAYBREAK-A DEBRIS FIELD LACED THE OUTER BANKS
BOATS AND JET SKI''S WERE PUSHED INLAND NEAR THE BARRIER SOUND
PIERS CUT IN HALF
AND RESIDENTS WALKED THROUGH IT ALL-ASSESSING THE DAMAGE
I expected a little sound side flooding-I have seen that before- but not 5 or six feet like we saw last night.
ACROSS THE BARRIER ISLAND WATER CAUSED FLASH FLOODING OVERNIGHT
AND THE STORM SURGE WATER WAS UP TO SIX FEET IN SOME AREAS AND YOU CAN SEE THAT SOME OF IT STILL STANDS IN THE STREETS OF MANTEO ALONG WITH DEBRIS.
NEARLY EVERYWHERE IN MANTEO TREES WERE SNAPPED
ELECTRICAL CREWS REMOVED BRANCHES STUCK IN THE POWER LINES
VEHICLES POWERED THROUGH FLOODED STREETS AS PEOPLE TRIED TO RETURN HOME
AND FISH-PUSHED IN BY THE SURGE SWAM THROUGH NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS
SUNDAY MORNING ON THE OUTER BANKS WAS ANYTHING BUT ROUTINE
The water was just rushing in so fast I mean it came in here like a freight train.
FREDDY ORTEGA OWNS A RESTAURANT THAT WAS FLOODED-HE WAS OUT EARLY RAISING THE AMERICAN FLAG IN FRONT OF HIS STORE.
The psychological aspect of it-coming in here and seeing things floating that are not supposed to be floating is just devastating.
HURRICANE IRENE CAUSED AT LEAST FIVE DEATHS IN NORTH CAROLINA AND LEFT MORE THAN 500,000 HOMES WITHOUT POWER AFTER MAKING LANDFALL EARLY SATURDAY
RESIDENTS AND CREWS ARE WORKIGN HARD TO RESTORE THE REGION

Ocracoke Island
Ocracoke Island is the southernmost island in Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is only accessible by ferry, plane, or a 2-3 hour drive from Manteo/Nags Head. This quaint fishing village is famous for being the site where Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, was shipwrecked off it's shores. It's lighthouse and Howard's Pub are also two well-known staples on the island. You can find beautiful sunsets over Silver Lake Harbor or on Ocracoke's South End beach; you can even drive your off-road vehicle on some of the most pristine and beautiful beaches you'll ever see. It is truly my favorite island I've visited in the states and the beauty here is unparalleled.

Speed limits in the United States vary depending on jurisdiction, with 75 to 80 mph (120 to 130 km/h) common in the Western United States and 65 to 75 mph (100 to 120 km/h) common in the Eastern United States. States may also set special speed limits for trucks and night travel along with minimum speed limits. The highest speed limit in the country is 85 mph (140 km/h), which is posted on a single stretch of tollway in rural Texas.

Presentation Title: Downscaling and Extrapolation of Hurricane Flooding Forecasts to Support Decision-Making
Abstract: Emergency managers rely on fast and accurate storm surge predictions from numerical models to make decisions and estimate damages during storm events. One of the challenges for such models is providing a high level of resolution along the coast without significantly increasing the computational time. Models with large domains, such as the Advanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) model used in this study, are accurate in predicting water levels and their variation in complex coastal regions, however their spatial resolution may limit their predictions of flooding at the scale of buildings, roadways, and critical infrastructure. A new tool has been developed that uses Geographic Information System (GIS) scripts to enhance the resolution of maximum water level predictions at the boundary of predicted flooding using a high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The water levels predicted by the lower resolution model are extrapolated outward to where the water would intersect with the higher resolution elevation dataset. The result is a highly-refined flooding boundary that represents inundation on scales smaller than the typical ADCIRC mesh resolution. This tool can process a 15-m DEM for all 32 coastal counties of the state of North Carolina in less than 15 minutes during a storm event. Comparison of results using spatial building datasets showed that for a simulation of Hurricane Matthew, 2,353 buildings were predicted to be flooded in Carteret County, NC prior to enhancing resolution, and 3,298 post-enhancement, an increase of 40 percent. In Dare County, the increase was 22 percent. This dramatic increase in flooded buildings shows the importance of achieving high accuracy in floodplains, as a relatively small change in predicted flooding extent can have a substantial impact on the predicted number of flooded buildings. The validity of these results was tested via comparisons to results of an ADCIRC model with the same 15-m resolution as the DEM in Dare County. Dare County is a coastal region with widely-varying topography and land cover, and preliminary comparisons have shown that the GIS method is accurate in coastal regions with steeper slopes and less accurate in flatter, low-lying areas.
